"(Article) Dante Higgins: The Dante Higgins Story"

Written by: Cecilia of Houston TREND Dante Higgins As we go through life music resides in the background; providing a full soundtrack of songs for our most painful moments, making us dance during joyous ones. Some of its orchestrators, the artists, give us full access to their own lives, while others stand humbly behind their music, preferring that we learn about them through lyrics alone. For Dante Higgins, who even snubbed a stage moniker in favor of his given name, less is more. Yet in learning the inspiration behind his potent and increasingly revered lyrics, the air of mystery that surrounds Higgins lifts to reveal the tale of a young man seemingly destined to stand out, despite his best efforts not to. - Houston Trend Cecilia

"Houston Lyricist Of The Year"

You may not have realized it yet, but Houston is in the middle of a genuine rap renaissance, with talented MCs and DJs dropping new tracks almost daily, and another must-have mixtape about once a week. We asked the Houston Press's main rap writer, Shea Serrano, for his choice of Houston's choicest lyricist, and he said it had to be Dante Higgins, who first appeared on our radar back in January with his School Boy Music tape. Higgins, says Serrano, "is among the fiercest talents in the New Houston rapper movement. Examined within themselves, his words are wonderfully nonsensical and bizarre ('I'm so used to my sofa!'; 'I ain't goin' nowhere! But if I go somewhere, it'll probably be Miami.'). Pieced together, though, when he webs them together into a single narrative, it is as close to watching a book as you're going to get." - Houston Press Awards

"The Dante Higgins Story"

Last year, Houston experienced a proper rap renaissance, likely its most inspired year since the paradigm-shifting exploits of 2005.

Standing near the center of this "New Houston" wave of young talent was the adenoidal Dante Higgins, a college football player turned rapper who had built up significant buzz by releasing four enjoyable mixtapes in less than two years.

Higgins is a hybrid emcee clever enough to freestyle in any cypher, a skill honed to a distinguished extent among nearly all of Houston's rappers. But he's also talented enough to give a song a distinct narrative without sounding contrived, a skill that only the upper-echelon rappers naturally possess. - Shea Serrano

"Dante Higgins Ware House Live Headliner Concert"

New Year's resolutions are all about making a point to do something your lazy ass should have been doing for years already. For me, that means digging into some of the "New Houston" rap artists that I've been mostly ignoring since the movement's emergence. After reading plenty about the city's youngest generation of rappers on Rocks Off and elsewhere, I was starting to feel like I was seriously missing out.

But with a new year come new opportunities, and I didn't have to wait long to get my feet wet. Dante Higgins released Rhymes for Months: Trillogy, one of Houston's best mixtapes of the year, back in November, and Thursday night brought the new songs with him to the Warehouse Live studio. - Nathan Smith

Bio

Higgins prides himself on being one of the few college-educated rappers in the game, but he’s certainly no stranger to the streets. His references to B.O.S.S. Click refer to his well known group of friends, “Boys Off Scott Street”. Growing up in the city streets of Houston, Texas has had a profound impact on Dante’s music – southern influences and references are sprinkled generously throughout his rhymes. Although Dante Higgins has created his own style that is far beyond the typical sound expected from Texas Artists ,  he always pays homage to the known Houston rap Legends before him.

Not only is H.I.G.’s voice distinctive, but his style of rhyming is bold and uncommon. He has a special talent for rap in general, but his storytelling will have you pressing rewind before you hear the next line. Dante Higgins is a humble artist, but not afraid to challenge any non-believers, and with his loyal fan base of “HigHeadz” behind him, his future looks as bright as a traditional H-town grill.
