We love introducing new artists to the site, and this is no exception. Meet B aka Da 2nd Letter. Wichita raised, B recalls when he knew he wanted to pursue music. "It was around the time Tupac All Eyez On Me Cd dropped...I listened to the cd from front to back, from front to back, twice, and right then [I knew]....this is what I'm made to do." B is the C.E.O. Of Soviet Union Records, based in Wichita, Ks, and has performed around the city at venues such as Loco Joe's and The Wichita Black Arts Festival, The Knitting Factory. Bio
The artist known as “Da2ndletter” won’t let anything stop him from getting his music heard. His recent street
campaign has helped to promote his latest music project titled “100 Rack¥.” Those who follow him through social
media were able to watch when he enlisted video cameras to document his hustle. He went from “mom
and pop” shops to Wichita-based radio stations which have the ability to put his music into regular
rotation.
“I wanted to show that I’m out here grinding,” says
Da2ndletter. “It was important for me to
make myself more visible.”
With most independent musicians relying solely on
social media to get the word out about their music,
Da2ndletter, wanted to step outside of the box.
He’s glad to know that people are taking notice of him and feels
he’s helping to set the standard for how fellow independent artists get their music into the hands of consumers.
Da2ndletter, originally from Denver, CO, has performed as an opening act for Do or Die, RZA from Wu Tang, Beanie
Sigel and has toured with the Outlawz and Johnny Richter of the
Kottonmouth Kings.
Although garnering some new fans, Da2ndletter has also ruffled some
feathers with his criticism of local DJs. He has expressed his belief
that DJs
don’t properly support indie artists.
“I feel that fifteen percent of the music the DJs spin in the clubs should be
made by local artists,” he says. “They have the ability to familiarize club
goers with our music to help get it out there-but they don’t.”
Da2ndletter says his remarks on social media are intended to spark dialogue about how artists and DJs can better
work together, but claims that his ideas for possible solutions get lost in the offense some DJs take towards him. But
he’s not easily discouraged and hopes that artist-DJ relationships in the city will grow to be mutually beneficial.
Some of the DJs he has networked with are willing and have played his music in club venues.
He feels artists need the support of DJs. One thing he doesn’t have to force, is his artistry which he describes as
“street music with a smart edge.”
“All of my music comes to me organically,” Da2ndletter describes. “None of my records are forced or pre
constructed.”
He will continue to capitalize on the buzz for “100 Rack¥” which has garnered more than 1 MILLION views and
growing since it’s premiere on World Star Hip Hop. The Nerve DJ Coalition has recorded more than 15,000 spins in
various circuits. The “money-getting” video plot, a visual for the track, was co-directed by Da2ndletter and Thad Swift
of Thad Swift Productions and filmed by Devon Bray of Bray Films. It was released in late April. For more information
