“Order of the Owl” is the first release by the Celtic band Cu Dubh. It is likely to be different than anything you’ve ever heard. Think of it as a sort of “dreamscape”, transporting you into a realm of ancient sounds and music. Moody, interesting and edgy, this CD is a great pick for those who are in the market for a journey, not just a song or two to tap the feet along with. This is a whole other kind of experience.
It’s a bit difficult to try and nail down this musical compilation for a review. As you listen, you’ll hear highland bagpipes ring out with clarity, almost like they are crying out in the darkness to be heard. In addition, you’ll also hear the heartbeat of the music reflected in the sounds of drums from all over the world. I kept feeling “wilderness” throughout the album. A sense that the music was almost primal in nature. It was really amazing.
I have to say that I was moved by this CD. “Order of the Owl” is definitely not your typical Celtic fare, but in this case, that isn’t a critique. In fact, I found the ancient sentiment that this album was laced with hypnotic and attractive all at the same time. It was beautiful, strong, and if I dare say this–very manly, without being aggressive. Almost a “warrior” vibe. The thread of it all got me and held my interest throughout.
All in all? I have to say that this was a very cool CD.

““an amazing pipe and drum group called Cu Dubh , a group specializing in World/ Celtic music, based out of Quincy, MA. Was a perfect fit to the night. Unbelievably powerful and infectious and intense sounds of thundering drums and dual bagpipes, the crowd at church could not help themselves but cling to each other in a wave of what looked like a hundred drunk people trying to dance like Irish step dancers. Everyone laughing and helping keep each other up as the crowd bounced, fell and shouted along to the music. Not a frown in the room, a very happy place. Every person within earshot was dancing. What better way to enjoy the holiday?!” - Krista Jane -Ryans Smashing Life ”

Bio
CU DUBH consists of musicians who have dedicated their lives to the study and performance of ancient music. David Macejka (2012 Grammy Nominee), Mike McNutt and a variety of hand picked performers have brought together their personal influences to create a dark, original show using the Great Highland Bagpipes and a barrage of drums from around the world. With influences from Scotland, Gaul, Galicia, Norway, Brittney, Ireland, Wales, Germany, India, Arabia, Africa, and beyond, they call back to the ancient tribes in all of us.
Cu Dubh came into existence when Mike and Dave wanted to try different musical directions and new creative outlets than were available at the time, and as Dave lives in the Northeast near Mike it was very easy to put their heads together. They decided on having a dark and haunting minor sound, together with very danceable beats to get people moving.
Recording for their debut album Order of the Owl began over the 2010 winter with creative ideas and incredible original music flowing like water, implementing numerous drums, contraptions, and even a waterphone. Elijah Woolcott was performing with the band at that time and was a major part of the composition of the original material. The follow up Walkin the Cinders was released in fall 2011 cementing the Celtic roots of the band; making a total of two albums of original music released in less than 10 months! Then came "Dance of the Seven Deils" (Afro Caribbean inspired), "Live at the Blackfriar", "ReOrder of the Owl" (Remix CD) and "RK" Making 6 cd's in under 3 years!
Each performer brings something different to the table and the combination of these ingredients makes an incredibly unique musical and visual experience for the audiences pleasure.
Cu Dubh is: The sounds of ancient thundering war drums and skirling dual bagpipes like youve never heard before. Tribal warrior music lives on through a new generation. This is true Old School Heavy Metal music. Viking. Pagan. Celt. Moor. Mongol. Satyr. Mystic. Sindhu. Raider. Lover. Fighter. Like a boot to the head: thunderous crack with ringing harmonies. Music for the warrior in all of us. The long boat is here. The Wolves are loose. The Ould Ways are back.
The band delivers high-energy melodies and sultry dance rhythms with a solid unison throughout every performance. Their music is enjoyed by young and old alike; those who are just learning to walk and those who have trodden across this world many times over. Cu Dubh plays for the sake of making music to satisfy the urges of their own souls and offers to take others along on their musical journey by sharing it through performance and recordings.
