CALDWELL, Texas -- 2014 has already proven to be an exciting year for one Brazos Valley resident. Cody Joe Hodges, born and raised in Caldwell, TX and currently residing in College Station, signed his first recording contract in December of 2013 with Tate Music Group, an independent label out of Oklahoma.
Cody Joe started playing music at an early age, but it wasn’t until his senior year in high school that he became serious about his art. Impassioned by such country greats as George Strait, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings, Cody Joe wrote his first song, “Daddy’s Dream”, his freshman year in the dorms at Texas A&M University.
Not long after graduating from Texas A&M in 2006, Cody Joe took off to Nashville, where he was lucky enough to find a place to stay with the late, great Johnny Paycheck’s steel guitar player, Jay Andrews. Jay was kind enough to help Cody Joe get a job working on Broadway. After his stay in Nashville, he decided to move back to Texas and join the Army.
While in the Army, (duty station, Fort Carson), he was playing music on a street corner in Colorado Springs with a homeless man, when he was discovered by an Army affiliate. He was then asked to audition for the group "Harmony in Motion," a vocal ensemble based out of Fort Carson, Colorado. After auditioning, they extended an offer to join them, and Cody Joe began traveling across America playing for large entertainment venues. Upon discharge, his dad had a talk with him about a career in the power line business as a lineman. This sounded like something exciting and also a great opportunity to draw upon for songwriting, so he joined the energy field in 2010.
At the same time, he started a band with the help of his buddy Dan Kuciemba, and a couple of students from Texas A&M. Calling themselves “The Linemen”, they came out with their first album as a band in 2012. In the spring of 2013, he decided to focus on his music and see what plans GOD had for him. It has been a blessing thus far, with his first recording contract being signed last month, and great things on the horizon.
Cody Joe Hodges’s music has been described as "outlaw country", with a large influence of the country greats and performers who started the genre in the late 70’s and 80’s. Cody Joe's voice ranges from silky smooth to raspy seduction. He and his band always thrill, putting on a high-energy performance at every show.
It is rare that you will find someone that reaches across the aisle to both the old and new generations, but Cody Joe Hodges does it every time. With a steel guitar, fiddle, stand-up bass, guitar and drums, Cody Joe’s sound is something out of the past, and his writing style of the here and now. You can catch his performance this Friday, Jan. 24th at The Western Club in Navasota, TX. - KBTX News 3

The covers were each unique to the three bands that put down some amazing sets at the Shiner Rising Star’s Round 1, Week 4 contest Thursdy (Aug. 22), held at the Grapevine Love & War in Texas’ venue.
Competing were Sean Russell, Cody Joe Hodges, and Ellee Morris, and when the announcement came Friday morning on KHYI, it was revealed that Cody Joe Hodges and his band would be moving on into Round Two.
Judges for the week were KHYI’s Chuck Taylor, L&W co-owner Ty Phelps, and AMP artists promotions company’s Dawn Gardin.
Shiner Rising Star is sponsored each year — and this is the 10th anniversary of the contest that provides one band with a recording contract — by Shiner Records, Shiner Beer, and Americana radio station KHYI, 95.3. The winning band also takes home more prizes, including new band equipment from KONO Guitars.
SR Sean MONKedSean Russell open the night up, and his cover (each band is required to perform one cover song along with all their own original songs), was a Ryan Bingham song. Judges, at critique time, complimented the band, saying they had good harmonies, sounded like Neil Young, overall a tight band, but one that could look at using bridges more often and work to bring a larger crowd to support them.
Cody Joe Hodges band followed, throwing in “The House of the Rising Sun” as their cover song. Cody Joe said he didn’t grow up around that sort of folky, swamp blues, but has learned to love it from being around others in his band. At critique time, the judges stressed that he seems to know the importance of a hook, that they liked the fiddle in the band and that Hodges does his own lead guitar work, and that it appeared that, even though they came the farthest distance for the contest, they brought the largest crowd.
Ellee Morris
Ellee Morris
Ellee Morris brought only one musician, a bass player, to the stage with her, and she played guitar and kick drum. Her cover was one of the many songs featured on the television series, “Nashville.” That impressed the judges, with one of them a little less favorably by calling it a “coffeehouse” style song.
Another thing the three bands had in common was that all three quit with an average of 9.5 minutes left in their respective sets.

Music has inspired every part of Cody Joe Hodges’ life. From his high school days of listening to classic country and the dorms of Texas A&M, to the US Army and singing competitions across the country, Cody Joe finally landed in Nashville. The artist signed with Lamon Records in June of 2014 and is set to record his first EP at the end of the summer.
Cody Joe started playing music at an early age, but it wasn’t until his senior year of high school that he became serious about songwriting. Inspired by George Strait, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings, Cody Joe wrote his first song, “Daddy’s Dream”, his freshman year of college.
After graduation and a stint in Nashville to make contacts in the music business, Cody joined the US Army. He joined the vocal ensemble “Harmony in Motion,” based out of Fort Carson, Colorado, and began traveling across America playing large entertainment venues. Upon his discharge, his dad proposed a career in the power line business as a lineman. He joined the energy field in 2010, allowing him to dedicate spare time to music and giving him plenty of new inspiration.
At the same time, he started a band called “Cody Hodges & The Linemen.” Cody Joe was recently nominated as Rising Star for the 2014 Texas Music Awards. Cody Hodges and The Lineman moved to Round 2 of the Rising Star Competition and he was nominated as Male Country Vocalist of the Year at the International Music and Entertainment Association.
Cody Joe is a traditionalist in that he loves the sound of traditional country. Steel guitars, fiddles and good, old-fashioned story-telling songs remind him of the way country music was when he was growing up.

His goal for every show is to fill the dance floor and get the crowd moving.
“I try to put a positive message in every song,” says Cody. “There is a lot of negative in this world, and when people listen to music, whether it is to escape or to be entertained, my goal is to put a grin on your face and a smile in your heart.”

Cody Joe is a traditionalist in the sense that he loves the sound of traditional country; with a steel guitar, fiddle and good, old-fashioned story-telling songs, the way country music was when he was growing up. As a true Texan, he grew up idolizing George Strait and aspires to the lifelong career he has had in the music industry. He is also a huge fan of the true country and outlaw country greats such as: Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. Not only were/are they storytellers, but fantastic writers, artists and personalities.

'With the instincts of a true storyteller, Cody Joe Hodges combines amazing vocals, poignant lyrics and flawless instrumentation to create this timely and relevant anthem.'
Listen to the award-winning song, "The Good Stuff" now! - The Akademia
As you’re recovering from the indulgence of Thanksgiving, I have a whole host of worthy music to take you through this weekend. The first is Cody Joe Hodges and his latest single ‘Getting Back To Country’, a song firmly in the Texas tradition of good traditional country music, with some bluntly hard-hitting lyrics about reality and gritty, personable vocals. It criticizes the direction of mainstream country at a time when the values of the genre seem to have all but disappeared, lamenting the golden days of acts like Haggard and Lynn.
Cody has been back and forth in his career like a yo-yo, always returning to his true passion of music. He left for Nashville after graduating college, but ended up signing up for the army, before being picked up by the group Harmony In Motion and traveling the country performing in venues. When he was discharged his father tried to convince him to go into the power line business, so Cody joined the energy field in 2010, but he ended up just forming another band! Last year he finally made the bid to focus on his music entirely, in the hope it would lead him to something far bigger and more soul fulfilling than before.
