I don’t quite know where to start when it comes to Carolyn Malachi. However, let’s get it straight up front – that is a very good thing...To fully describe her music would involve reaching back into time and into many different genres. She’s new and old school jazz, but then again, she’s also hip-hop – she spits better than many. She’s spoken word, but then again she’s also R&B – she’s got more soul than many. As far as music goes, she covers just about everything your group of friends might like. In an industry where genre classification is sometimes forced upon artists, Carolyn Malachi continues to stay true to her imaginative sound and to make music that is almost impossible to label. One listen to her stellar Gold album will tell you that.

Bio
CAROLYN MALACHI combines Jazz, Hip Hop, Spoken Word, and lots of imagination. In 2013 the artist whom MTV calls “one of five R&B artists to obsess over” - released a full-length album. GOLD includes FM / XM radio hit “All Right” and “Fall Winter Spring Summer” which NPR named to its 10 Songs Public Radio Can’t Stop Playing list.
Malachi describes GOLD as being an ever-appreciating commodity: self-empowerment. She immerses listeners in stories about their inner Gold, teaching them how to embrace and transform into this state of being by album's end.
While studying business at Shepherd University in West Virginia, away from her hometown of Washington, DC, Carolyn Malachi began carving a unique musical path. She released her first album, Revenge of the Smart Chicks in 2008, then its sequel, Revenge of the Smart Chicks II: Ambitious Gods, in 2009. The two independent recordings lead Malachi to join the Recording Academy. Malachi now serves as the Vice President of the Recording Academy, Washington, DC chapter. Her 2010 EP release, Lions, Fires & Squares, garnered national acclaim and earned a 2011 Grammy award nomination for Best Urban / Alternative Performance.
When asked whether she prefers rapping to singing or spoken word poetry, Malachi replies, "Ultimately, the music comes first, because music is freedom." She says, "GOLD is an invitation to participate in that freedom."
Malachi extended the invitation to school children. In January 2013, she launched the #IAM Campaign in partnership with The School Fund (TSF), Carmelita Group, and Chegg. This innovative campaign fused tech, commerce, and music to address one cause - global access to education. Each view of Malachi's "Free Your Mind" music video generated an hour of class time for students in East Africa and has funded more than 10,000 classroom hours to date. GOLD continues and expands the campaign's efforts. Each download funds an hour of class time for The School Fund’s students.
Says Carolyn Malachi, now a Global Fund for Women Creative Champion, "Each of our paths is unique. Music is the intersection where we pause for collective conversation… The act of creating is empowering. That's the beauty of technology and education; through it and with it, we can create solutions to the challenges we face. "
Carolyn Malachi’s next act is to perform with her ensemble in Taiwan, China and New Guinea, beginning March 2015, with the prestigious American Music Abroad Program.
