Call for Candor, a local indie band has gained popularity throughout the music scene––marking their territory in El Paso since 2012. Currently formed by UTEP students the lineup consists of Rene Carbajal junior economics and finance major, Eric Howell junior music composition major, Reeda Blanco junior criminal justice major and Isaac Lara freshman pre-engineering major. They are signed to local music label Electrical Social. The band members said they take their inspiration from bands such as Modest Mouse, Incubus, Death Cab for Cutie and Minus the Bear. Although they’ve only been playing together for two years, and only one year with guitarist Lara, the band is gaining popularity throughout the local music scene at a fast pace. “I actually feel like we’ve moved at a really fast pace compared to how other bands in the city seem to be moving,” Lara said. “Sure the band has been together since 2011, but we didn’t really start hitting the scene hard or anything until I joined.” Although the band isn’t too sure when their next release is coming out, they are shooting for this spring. Call for Candor is also hoping to tour during spring break or in the summer. The band plays frequently with their favorite local acts in El Paso, such as Manifique, a local electro pop duo. “I really like working with Jamie Hernandez and her band Manifique,” Blanco said. “She’s a great person and puts out some awesome music—she has so much talent.” Bassist Howell said he enjoys playing with the band Wake Up Stranger as well. “I’ve known everyone in the band since we were in middle school and have grown together as musicians and friends,” Howell said. “Because of this, it makes performing alongside them just something truly special.” The band members said they also enjoy playing alongside their Electric Social label mates L.I.G.R.E. and The Other Half. As small as the El Paso music scene is, it is incredibly diverse. Gutter punks, metal heads, noise bands, hardcore kids and underground hip-hop are all over the city. However, it seems that recently the bands that have been getting the most attention are the bands that participate in the local indie rock or alternative scene such as The Royalty, who was recently signed to Victory Records. “Well every band in this town has a distinct sound,” Carbajal said. “If anything, we just aim to be completely honest. Our chemistry together shows prominently when it comes to the band’s sound.” Lara said the band’s sound is very different than other local bands because all of the members have different musical influences. “With us, we all have different influences, and as we all add our part to the song we add some of our influences, really diversifying it,” Lara said. The four band members are passionate about the music they play and write. “I don’t know about the rest of the guys, but playing in a band and having music just be my job is just something that I have always wanted my entire life,” Lara said. “Well, it’s awesome because I’ve just become so close to all of them, it’s like we make a little family, which just adds to the whole thing about being a musician. Just getting to do what you love with some of the people that you care about the most, it’s like I’m living the life right there.” Call for Candor’s next show is at 9 p.m. Feb. 8 at The Lowbrow Palace. They will be performing alongside Ice Eater, Europa and the Bull and The Summit. - The Prospector

Bio
It is Saturday, at the Lowbrow Palace. The typical smell of cigarettes, various beers and hard liquors, and the sweat of performers mixes in bar’s atmosphere. The sight of curious individuals looking to express their unique freedoms amid the seats, benches, and bar becomes increasingly apparent as the headliners take the stage. One by one, the band, Call for Candor, gets into position. First on is Isaac Lara, the guitarist for group. He climbs on and begins to lay his incredulous pedal collection upon the stage. A cacophony of lights, which represent the undeniable versatility of sounds which will be produced by these very pedals, begin to flash as his Fender Stratocaster is plugged in and prepared to send it’s signals through Isaac’s preferred amp; a Dr. Z Carmen Ghia. Jorge Sandoval follows closely behind with his Fender Precision Bass and a cable to plug into his vintage cabinet. He seems calm and reserved as he maneuvers through the entanglement of cables, but the crowd knows better than to expect any resistance from his performance as soon as the music hits. Up next is Reeda Blanco, the drummer for the group. She walks up to her throne upon the drum riser and and prepares her cymbals and repositions the drums. There is a certain elegance to the way she does this, an elegance which is most apparent due to the years of drumming and percussion which she brings along with her as her most definitive strength. Last up is Rene Carbajal, the Singer/ Songwriter of the group carrying his Fender Telecaster on a strap over his denim jacket. He begins to adjust the microphone as the anticipation builds. The lights drop off and before you know the sound hits; this is Call for Candor.
Candor, as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary, refers to the quality of being sincere, open, and honest. It is a word which on it’s own represents that which most individuals and groups require for a sufficient progression, a quality that is often missing. Nevertheless, this innate honesty is the very foundation for the songwriting and performances of local Indie rock band; Call for Candor, from El Paso, TX. A band with great aspiration and talent, and a true love for the musical arts.
Call for Candor begun it’s build in 2011 as a three piece, a project in passing started by Rene Carbajal. However, much has changed since the band’s inception, after having undergone the loss of one of the original members, and the addition of two new members, Call for Candor has steadily built up it’s audience around El Paso, TX. as well as building it’s reputation to put on an unforgettable performance. Today Call for Candor is an extremely serious group that is committed to the progression of it’s music. They are one of the bands under the Electric Social record label, a highly selective El Paso label which represents only the best in the El Paso music scene. Call for Candor has had a major involvement in performances all over town ranging in anything from Block Party’s (i.e. The Sunset Heights Block Party, The Robinson Ave. Block Party) to High Profile local events (i.e. Representative Beto O’Rourke’s Personal fundraisers and awareness events) to performances at local venues like the Lowbrow Palace and Tricky Falls. The group is currently in the studio finishing up it’s very first release; The Details EP, which is set to drop, with great anticipation, in mid to late April. Following this the band will begin it’s first ever tour through the Southwest along with other bands in the Electric Social record label.
This is a group which truly cares about the quality of it’s craft and product. A motivated group with a vector and a definitive motive, one which will be in no doubt realized. This is a band that keeps the show going, that plays rock and roll, and that cares about the audience have an undeniable, unforgettable experience. In all it’s sincerity, openness and honesty, this is Call for Candor.
