"Hygienic Rock Haus takes place Saturday in NL’s Crocker House Ballroom"

Blending the bewitching and disparate sounds of old and new, the Hygienic presents five intoxicating area acts Saturday for the annual Rock Haus concert — and this year's lineup is a classic.

Dogbite (7 p.m.), Burnouts From Outer Space (9 p.m.) and The Hempsteadys (11:30 p.m.) represent a more recent generation of New London bands, while The Cartoons (8 p.m.) and The New Johnny 5 (10 p.m.) are two of the most iconic groups in the region's music history.

It's going to be good all night, but pay special attention to the Burnouts' set. After months — even years — of rumors and anticipation, they're readying a spring release of a new album with 10 never-released tracks ranging from balladry and driving rockers to more ethereal cloud-surf extravaganzas. - The Day

"Pychedelic futurists hit Strange Brew Pub on Thursday"

It's coming up on a year since the gleefully experimental rock band Burnouts From Outer Space released a hummable dirge called "Corpse Bride." Rumors have long persisted that the act — under the mesmeric guidance of vocalist Bobby Crash — have been incarcerated in the recording studio readying a full-length album.

These dudes — an all-star lineup usually includes guitarists Max Kelley and Pete Barrera, keyboardist Matt Gouette, bassists David Freeburg or Jason Banta and drummer Scott Kolb — have somehow managed to incorporate only the great qualities of Syd Barrett, Hawkwind, Flaming Lips and the Dukes of Stratosphere into an irresistible, post-millennial sonic roux.

The band hits the Strange Brew Pub on Thursday. Experience this live — and then demand they finish the album. - The Day

Bio

Formed in 2010, Burnouts From Outer Space was born from a love of the energy, creativity, and depth that made the ‘70s and ‘80s a golden age of rock & roll. Described by The Day’s Rick Koster as a mix of, “Heroes-era Bowie, Atom Heart Mother-era Pink Floyd, and whatever Hawkwind record works best with mushrooms for you,” Burnouts is the brainchild of veteran drummer-turned-frontman Bobby Crash.

Equal parts charismatic crooner, paranormal zealot, and exacting taskmaster (think J.K. Simmons in Whiplash, but with a sense of humor), Crash took his time finding the musicians who could bring his vision to life. “We’ve lost many ‘Red Shirts’,” he says, making one of his frequent Star Trek references, “and we owe a lot to those who didn’t make it.”

The lineup includes Crash (lead vocals and percussion), Max Kelly (lead guitar and backup vocals), Pete Barrera (lead and rhythm guitar), Jason Banta (bass and backup vocals), J Curland (drums), and Mike Albaine (keyboards). When asked if he expects the lineup to change anytime soon, Crash deadpans, “not at the moment, unless you know a really good frontman.”

The group is currently in the final stages of mixing their debut full-length album, Apollo, due out in the spring of 2019. Banta, an experienced live and studio engineer in his own right, is doing much of the heavy lifting. With songs about lost love, the origins of Satan, and a romantic picnic under the shadow of a nuclear power plant, the album captures the full range of human emotion.

Already local legends in their hometown of New London, the band is sure to win over legions of new fans with this engaging release, and they look forward to all that the future has in store for them.
