A death metal EP overflowing with insanity and ultra-technicality - Fuego Negro

"Brickhaven - Picante Gigante EP Review"

Brickhaven:

I've know of this band for a good while, and even seen them once before my good friend and their bassist Don Newman joined their ranks. They have always been a band that would blend technical guitar riffs, melodic grooves and I feel they could bring something different to the table in the world of metal.

Their newest E.P. Picante Gigante, does just that and more. My expectations were high, and they didn't disappoint.

The very first song "Hackerman" comes out of the gate swinging with a ferocity of riffs and tech savvy guitar work. Remnants of Beyond Creation, mixed with Psycroptic, mixed with Obscura. I may be a bit biased about the bass work, but the work Don does is amazing and just down right makes me feel like I could do better in my music. He definitely plays the bass like a lead, but it compliments the tone, and groove of the song itself.

Moving on to "Call of the Yeti". If this is wrong for being groovy and making you pump your fist ..I do not want to be right. It takes a different approach and reminds me of influences of The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza and Arsonists Get All the Girls. Then it just hits you with a nasty groove at 3:45 .... I just had to stop writing so I could get into the nastiness for all its glory......wow!

"Destroyer of Worlds" is a track that is full of chaos, but the kind of chaos you get when you mix a raptor with machine guns riding on a shark into battle. The leads are massive, the drumming is on point, clean, and the head banging is without fail. I feel a very heavy The Faceless presence in this song!

And of course, the not-so-suprising cover of "Africa" by Toto. ... unexpected, but welcomed!!!!

The biggest shock and one of my favorites is the cover of "Careless Whisper", originally by George Michael. I never thought this song could sound so amazing with the guitar work and the way they made it their own. Definitely a top track to check out!

And then the final track...
Just wow. They took the Megadeth song "Take no Prisoners" and basically rewrote it better, while putting their own spin on it. I could jam this version way more than the original.

Final thoughts,
With three original and three covers, its definitely a cool view into the bands talent, and musicianship. I definitely want to see more from them and I’m excited they are working on a full length. My only complaint on the E.P. (very minor and doesn't take away from the music at all) is I think the production could have been a tad better.

Overall 8.8/10 - Hex Media

Good afternoon to all dear readers of the page, hoping that you are very well on this Tuesday. Today, I have brought you a new recommendation from my Texan friends Brickhaven, a band that I just discovered and that your writer has shared a few words with.

Brickhaven is a band located in Houston, Texas that shares a devastating sound and extraordinary voices characteristic of Death Metal. They are currently working on new material, so today we will give a brief review of their most recent production entitled "Picante Gigante".

Outstanding songs from the EP:
"Hackerman": Introducing this demonic world with a powerful sound and epic overtones, the aggressive voices plus the instrumentation perfectly complement this first song, and let's not leave behind the technical degree they apply to it.
"Call Of The Yeti": with a darker context, the call of the supernatural forces are present. What I loved about this piece is that environment of torture-fun among the crowd that surrounds them, the sound makes me remember a little the debut of the band Entombed - very good too.
"Destroyer Of Worlds": destruction has begun with this piece that spills chaos over the world, the passages that make it up seem from another world, while also adding those vocal changes that will blow your mind in seconds. The progressive nuances work very well in every note they deliver. I'd say this is the cornerstone of the record.
"Africa": cover of this classic by the band Toto, the truth is that this version that they have made surprised me quite a bit and, well, who doesn't, many remember it for those touches of Pop music, but here there was an explosive touch. I liked that intro of initiation ritual that immediately unloads the whole thing in minutes, a very well elaborated cover.
"Careless Whisper": The cover of another classic by the late George Michael, it is interesting to see how a band that demonstrates a brutal sound pays tribute to the artists who have influenced Pop music in a certain way. Most could see them as detractors towards the Heavy genres, but I think it's a matter of taste and mentality. Turn up the volume and delight your ears with this wonderful piece of music.
"Take No Prisoners": concluding this demonized world they give us, one last cover from the classic Megadeth album "Rust In Peace". The aggressiveness implanted in this song is chaotic and they knew how to adapt it to their style. I'm sure Mr. Dave Mustaine would be fascinated with what these guys did, that if he leaves aside his religious beliefs a bit, whatever a great ending to this musical work.

Excellent work that this band has achieved, short but quite effective for their audience. If you are a fan of these genres with a sound that makes you move your head for a long time, here is a perfect jewel, go ahead and listen to this EP and if you like to leave a comment, you can gladly do so in the comments part.

- Dr. M Music Tlx

Bio

Standing out from the predominantly downtempo/-core scene of Houston, Texas, Brickhaven's first release, Picante Gigante, has been received to internationally critical acclaim, clamoring of pristine technicality and beautifully melodic, interwoven harmonies. Weaving a brilliant tapestry of distant genres from swing and blues to classical and techno, Brickhaven strives to create a progressively intense sound rooted in brutality while drawing subject matter from dark Japanese fictions and nostalgic experiences.

In Brickhaven's brief history, the band has performed at most every notable Houston venue, including the House of Blues for the Summer Slaughter tour with The Black Dahlia Murder, Origin, Rings of Saturn, The Faceless and Dying Fetus, White Oak Music Hall and Warehouse Live.

The band, formed in 2017, consists of songwriter Matt Ertl, who performs on guitar and vocals, and Don Newman on fretless bass. Anticipation abounds as the debut album, Plus Ultra, ft. 'Lord' Marco Pitzurella (Of Rings of Saturn, Ex- The Faceless) on drums, nears completion, and is set for a winter release in 2020 after its professional mastering. A second album is already written as well, and the recording process shall begin very soon.
