Upstart locals Bravestation had some remarkably strong songs on their self-released debut EP last year and they’ve obviously grown in leaps and bounds during the months since. The quartet’s second mini-album is a much more atmospheric and rhythmically daring beast than its predecessor. Nevertheless, it’s impossible to disregard the talent and ambition on display in airy, sidewinding mini-epics such as “White Wolves” and “Colour Us With Youth,” both of which — and I know these lads are fellow fans so they won’t mind me making the reference twice in print — reach for Foals’ level of offhand complexity and don’t embarrass themselves at all.

3. Bravestation, Giants and Dreamers (Independent). Bravestation was dealing in a fairly standard, if highly likeable, breed of brooding neo-New Wave when it made its promising arrival on the local indie scene a few years ago. The quartet has grown up since then, however, and could be mistaken for a different band altogether on its long-in-the-making debut full-length, Giants and Dreamers. Spritely, sun-kissed, electroshocked equatorial pop is Bravestation’s stock in trade these days, and while some of the tunes here aren’t worlds apart from the rhythmically dense tropicalia of Friendly Fires’ Pala or the airier bits of Foals’ Total Life Forever, it’s a sound far more identifiably the group’s own. More momentum wouldn’t hurt these blissed-out dreamscapes, but given the growth that Bravestation has exhibited, these lads will have the kinks worked out in time for Album No. 2. - The Toronto Star

Hello again, and welcome to the latest instalment of New Music Friday. How was your week? I hope you made the most of it; I certainly did, but the downside of that was that I spent a lot of time travelling. Even then, it wasn't so bad, because whilst sitting on trains and buses this week, I managed to get to grips with a lot of new music. This week was just as packed as the previous week was, and the stuff I came across turned out to be even more diverse than usual; you should expect the unexpected in this week's edition, as there are some kinds of songs here that wouldn't normalley make the cut, but NMF is just as much a horizon-broadening exercise for me (and you, dear reader) as it is a collection of the best new tracks around. Go on, add some music to your weekend - who knows, you may end up being surprised.



Revere - 'I Won't Blame You' [Track of the Week]

The debut album from this London-based band, Hey! Selim took a while to make an impression on me when I heard it almost 3 years ago, but Revere arte a band who have grown on me considerably since then. Their debut was heavy on melancholic moments, but their new song is a markedly more upbeat affair, at least from a musical perspective. It's built around a defeated-sounding refrain - 'You can't save me now; I'm sorry, child, but I won't blame you' - and the powerful vocals of frontman Stephen Ellis, who leads the seven-piece band. Second album My Mirror / Your Target is due for release later in the year, and all signs point to it highlighting the band's growth over the last few years - grab the lead single as a free download below for a taste of what's to come.





Tripwires - 'Shimmer'

I featured this band last month, but their new song is even better and deserves throrough investigation. The Reading-based Tripwires have been plugging away at their craft for years, but a debut album is finally coming down the tracks, and Spacehopper is due for release on June 17th via Frenchkiss Records. New track 'Shimmer' gets released as a single a week earlier, and marks a further evolution in the quartet's sound, its mid-tempo feel combining with gauzy guitars and muscular drums to produce a song that, well, shimmers. Its shoegaze-y feel means that it'll be a perfect match for the summer months ahead of us. It has plenty of grower potential, as well, opening itself up after multiple listens. You'll want to give it that sort of attention.





Night Verses - 'Antidepressants'

And now for something completely different. If you're in the mood for something heavier, you'd do well to check out the new song from New York-via-California post-hardcore merchants Night Verses. They're gearing up to release their debut album Lift Your Existence on July 22nd, and the first track to be taken from the album is the majestic 'Antidepressants', which comes out swinging with an aggressive feel, but takes plenty of unexpected twists and turns over its near 5-minute running time, the band making an effort to keep the listener engaged throughout. There are some impressively melodic parts set against the relentless drumming and shifting dynamics, and it all adds up to a rather striking statement from a band who clearly have much more where that came from. They're going to deliver a great debut in two months, mark my words.

Toroto’s Bravestation, who we posted about last year, are getting ready to follow-up the solid Giants & Dreamers debut with a new EP IV on May 14th. It will have four-songs in totals (hence the title) and sees the group diving further into layering melodic synths and vibrant percussion with tighter production. You get a sense that this is a band that is starting to come into their own. The first single from the release is soothing “All We Have Is Us.” The vocal harmonies are the real grabber on this one. With their fantastic debut album released little under a year ago, Canadian trio Bravestation have announced details of a new EP, titled IV, out 14 May. Having transformed from a quartet to a three-piece, they’ve also experienced a change in sound, adopting a more R&B focused direction. New track All We Have Is Us is arguably their most complete work to date, relying on the 70′s-esque guitars and choppy percussion sections. Check it out below. - Crack In The Road
