Recorded in Houston, TX and set for a mid-2016 release, Blank Check, Volume I is the debut full-length from the Texas-based writer/producer. Bizzythowed has worked alongside some of the music industry’s biggest names, including The Weeknd, Nicki Minaj and Fabolous. LISTEN TO “ALL THE WAY”
Originally from Houston and inspired by hip-hop artists and metal acts alike, Bizzythowed took to the guitar as a teen and was admitted to Boston’s Berklee School of Music with a major in guitar performance. He would later finish his education in audio engineering in Miami, where he co-founded the band Purple Popcorn and established Mean Stringz Entertainment. Through lending production insight to artists and studios throughout Miami, Bizzythowed managed to secure late night appearances as a guitarist on Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Regis and Kelly.
Since then, Bizzythowed has provided instrumentation and arrangements for some of pop and hip-hop’s best-known stars, including Pitbull, French Montana and MIMS. Blank Check, Volume I will serve to carve out Bizzythowed’s place not just behind the soundboard, but also as a musician in his own right. - Vents Magazine

The local hard rock-rap band Purple Popcorn does, in fact, rock, but has gotten most of its recognition from stomping all over pop hip-hop. In the early days of its formation two years ago, the band pummeled both Soulja Boy's "Crank That" and Chris Brown's "Kiss Kiss," and in so doing added some much-needed weight to both tracks.
More recently, Purple Popcorn did the same thing with Kid Cudi's "Day N Nite," though why they did so is anybody's guess. Thankfully, these days the band is after more righteous game. Their mashing in on Lil Wayne's "With One Arm," Flo Rida's "Low" and, most impressively, Eminem's "3am" shows that, given the right track to back, that part of what they do is well worth getting done - and then some.
Still, Purple Popcorn is a band proper, and if they're ever going to be
considered in the same breath as, say, Living Color, then it's got to
be through their originals, a mix of proggy experimentation, metal, and
fierce raps. But this hybrid is best caught live and in your face,
where it won't matter what some scribbler is even saying.
The band plays White Room this Friday. As a preview, here's an MP3 of their song "Fountain of Youth."

This is the first part in a two-part series of live-on-air performances by Bizzythowed on KPFT 90.1 Houston. Be sure to catch his live performance this Sunday at The Creative Union II. Check his website for new content as he is set to release his first full-length solo album soon! - Trevor Southard
When most people think of rock stars, they probably don’t think of those who have worked with Nicki Minaj or The Weeknd, but guitarist/singer/songwriter, who’s worked with both, is here with a solo EP that blends hip-hop lyrics and guitar solos for something unlike anything you’ve heard before.
Based out of Texas, Bizzythowed’s debut EP, “Blank Check, Vol. 1” has arrived and is dripping with soulful guitar licks, aggressive lyrics and drum patterns that blend funk, jazz and hip-hop.
It’s difficult to describe Bizzythowed’s lyrics without possibly offending some, but you’ll hear rhymes that traditionally come from R&B or rap and are given a different feeling with a serenading tone, rather than one that comes off as arrogant. Like the chorus on “GTBO” where the line, “Get these bitches open,” is repeated, but with a tone of sincerity as well as a slight aggression that would accompany those who would say that about someone.
While there are songs like “FHITS” that have traces of soul, other songs like “Cut the Check” and “Life is Here” take inspiration from old school metal like early Metallica or even Pantera. On paper it sounds too jarring to work, but the way the songs are ordered and the style of each makes the EP feel complete, like a thought progress, and not just a random collection of songs. This is a unique blend of genres that doesn’t come off sounding like “nu-metal” from the 90s or other rap rock outfits like Rage Against the Machine. This is something that stall together unique and deserves a listen for fans of hip-hop or more traditional rock/metal. - Creative Control Magazine
Some bands try for crossover hits, and some throw Hail Marys from 60 yards out. Purple Popcorn would fall into the latter category. The Miami-based hard-rock/rap act is headed up by Danny "Styles" Schofield and Winston "Blackout" Thomas, the same pair who produced 10 of the songs on Shawn Mims's "Music Is My Savior" LP, released earlier this year. Near-universally reviled by hip-hop purists, the album was nevertheless a Billboard smash, with the hit "This Is Why I'm Hot" (one of Styles and Blackout's production assignments) rocketing to number one on the Hot 100.
The band has some breathtaking material. Combining the nu-metal sounds of Sevendust, the subterranean indie-prog of Minus the Bear, and Tupac-influenced rap, the songs treat each genre with great respect. But will the bandmates be able to sell their hip-hop base on the idea? "We feel like our hip-hop fans will cross over inevitably because that's how we feel music is going," says guitar player Brandon "Bizzy" Hollemon. "We'd like to have a hit on the hip-hop radio stations of the urban market and songs playing on all the rock stations at the same time."
But — ahem — hard rock at Jazid? "We chose Jazid for our first local show because it's got a nice, small, intimate setting," says Blackout. "We wanted to feel close to our fans so they can really feel the music." - Miami New Times
Urban rocker Bizzythowed has worked with artists throughout his career, like Nicki Minaj, Fabolous and with The Weeknd on his Grammy award-winning album “Beauty Behind the Madness.” Now the Texan is taking the mic and guitar on his blend of hip-hop and hard rock on his new EP “Blank Check, Vol. 1.”
Creative Control: What got you into music initially?
Bizzythowed: [I’ve] been doing music since I was a small child. I would say around second grade I started learning music and theory. I went to a music and science academy for elementary [school], so I came out of there playing trombone. I started guitar when I was 11 and took lessons on the weekends until I got accepted into Berklee College of Music.
CC: How would you describe your sound?
BT: My sound is a bunch of musical styles combined in my own unique way to make a gumbo pot. I take from everything that I like and I interpret it in my own way, and that’s what the listener is getting. I listen to everything – all styles. [I’m] very open minded in that sense.
CC: From where do you draw inspirations for your songs?
BT: From anywhere really. It can come from being out in public or from a sign I read or something I saw on TV. It can come from a conversation and someone says something that triggers [something] in my brain. Really the possibilities are endless. Being a professional there are no excuses to [not] produce content so you learn to find it from anywhere. I can get inspired from a fortune cookie lol.
CC: What was your experience like working with The Weeknd? Did the time working with him have any impact on your music or give you any inspiration? Did he take anything from you or feel inspired in anyway?
BT: Working with The Weeknd was and is a awesome experience. A truly gifted individual. Working with him and me coming into the situation I was already [an] established producer and session player with placements under my belt. I’ve been combining and mixing rock and other musical styles and pulling inspiration from the 80s and 70s into my music for a while, so a lot of that I showed him and put him on to some bands and groups. For me just to see the meteoric rise is inspirational and knowing that I had a part in the sound means a lot. I think he got a lot from me and from a lot of other people around him that has helped shape him into a musical beast.
CC: Is there any artist who you would like to work with in the future?
BT: I love working with artists and it’s something I will always do until I can’t anymore. As far as someone in particular, Wiz would be fun. B.O.B., Lupe, Chance The Rapper, Metallica, Katy Perry. I’m down to work with whoever wants to work with me and got the money to back it up!!
CC: Since you’ve worked with artists more prominent in the hip-hop scene, how do you feel about samples?
BT: Samples aren’t really my thing as a musician. I play an instrument so even if there is something I like from a particular record, I usually replay it before I sample it. I learned the hard way some years ago about samples and having to pay the people you sampled and that was a huge, huge chunk of money where if we would have just re-played it we would have made a ton more money. I don’t knock it because it’s a huge part of hip-hop and someone who can expertly sample and do it the right way without just blatantly ripping another artist off – I respect that.
CC: Now that “Blank Check, Vol. 1” has been released, do you plan on touring?
BT: Yes, I do. I’ve been getting things in order to tour this fall. I have two more releases I want to put out this summer and then start really killing the live shows.
CC: Because the EP is called “Blank Check, Vol. 1” will there be a Vol. 2? If so will it have a similar sound to the first?
BT: There is a Volume 2 and it is similar and different. Similar because of the content and different because Volume 1 is more live drums stripped down bass guitar and drums.. Vol. 2 is more beats and at a slightly slower pace.
CC: What do you hope the future has in store for you?
BT: To just be successful and eating off of my art, to continue to build my band and my brand and also produce and create with artist the caliber of The Weeknd. That’s what I do. People are just now starting to realize who I am and that I’ve been here a while making a mark in this industry and I will continue to do that. - Creative Control Magazine
People may not be familar with Bizzythowed, but they certainly know the top talents that he's worked with. Boasting Nicki Minaj, Pitbull and French Montana on his resume, the Houston-based producer may be cemented in the urban world, but he's about to showcase his heavy rocking side. You can stream his forthcoming Blank Check, Volume 1 EP, which presents Bizzythowed as a talent who go far beyond the pop and hip hop world. Songs like the melodic "FHITS" and the blistering "Nothing You Can Do About It" is a strong sign of things of what will come if Bizzythrowed continues to explore rock.
"Blank Check, Volume 1 is my first solo project I'm putting out myself," he says. "After over a decade of being a session player, producer and songwriter behind the scenes for some of the industries top artists and producers. I really wanted to do my own thing after my last major label project (The Weeknd). So I started this project on my own. It's my version of a stripped down live, raw and gritty band that's uncompromisingly rocks the fuck out and incorporates elements of metal, funk, pop, hip-hop sometimes all into one song!!
"It's a window into my life the good the bad and the ugly. It's an emotional roller coaster that will no doubt make the listener feel. I wanted to make the songs short and sweet get in and get out so to speak. It's urban, hard rock music in hip-hop format or punk rock format.
"That's how I purposely arranged the songs. I just wanted to have fun with this one and say whatever I wanted how I wanted write and make songs the way i see and hear them and just give it to the people with zero pressure. I'm just having fun living my dream and sharing it with everyone and hopefully I inspire someone to do the same and follow their dreams and not give a fuck what anyone thinks."
Bizzythowed's Blank Check, Volume I is out on April 18. - Pure Volume
Bizzythowed’s big break occurred when his second grade teacher had him playing rhythm on the wooden blocks set. Fast-forward a few decades, Biz is now a guitarist for The Weeknd, and he has accrued much experience working in the studio with and writing songs for some of today’s biggest names in hip-hop. Distinguishing himself form his contemporaries with his diverse interest in both the sound of and technical elements of alternative genres like electronica, bluegrass, funk, etc.
His newest release, "Life Is Here" is a no-holds-barred hard rock track about stepping up and going after whatever you want and not wasting time before you do so. ""Life is Here" is one of the more personal songs of the project and one of the first songs I wrote when I started on this journey. It’s a song about not wasting your life away and realizing that time is constant. Time waits for no one[...] Personally its me kicking myself for basically wasting away my early 20's partying in Miami and not focused on what I should have been and now I am trying to make up for lost time. Its about saying its okay to regroup but don't wait or hesitate because the clock is ticking. These moments we have right here right now will never be the same even after a second. So make the best of your choices and time," he tells AFROPUNK. - Afropunk
Bizzythowed is a name you may be hearing more of in the very near future. Bizzythowed is an urban hard rocker who grew up on a large dose of metal and hip-hop which in turn has influenced him in crafting his own impressive music. Aside from releasing his own tunes, Bizzythowed has worked with musicians such as The Weekend, Fabolous and pop star Nicki Minaj. His new record, due in mid-2016, is called Blank Check, Volume I and is the debut full-length from the Texas-based writer and producer. We recently spoke with Bizzythowed via email to ask him about his influences, his new record, and his many musical ventures.
Ok, let’s just get it out of the way first. Where did the name Bizzythowed come from and does it actually mean anything?
Bizzythowed: Well my nickname is Bizzy... everyone calls me that since high school because I'm always into something or about to go somewhere or working on a project. Thowed is a urban word used to describe something really good... or to describe being really fucked up (drunk, high etc..) So you put those together and you get Bizzythowed and my brand of music.
You were influenced most by metal and hip-hop music growing up. What genre did you like or listen to more?
Bizzythowed: I listened to more rock and metal after my father’s death... The lyrics and music were more therapeutic for me than the messages in rap music at the time. Once I discovered gangster rap and a more darker side of rap started to emerge in the '90s I loved that sound as well.
If you loved metal and hip-hop growing up then you must have been in love with the Judgement Night soundtrack from the early 1990s. Thoughts?
Bizzythowed: Oh of course, I loved that album... Very influential for me... Biohazard was one of my fav bands and Ice T / Slayer combination was ridiculous and the Run DMC / Livin Colour combo was great!
Your debut full-length album is called Blank Check, Volume I. Tell us a bit about the record and what it sounds like.
Bizzythowed: Well the record was made in studios and hotel rooms and friends’ houses throughout Miami, Houston and Los Angeles. It sounds raw and honest. I wrote all of the songs on the album and I have some cameos from some great artists and friends from Houston and I played all of the guitars and bass on the album. It’s an urban hard rock album at its core and there are metal and punk and hip-hop elements throughout. It’s everything you like and without all the things you hate in a song. The songs are a range of emotions and are short and sweet. Lyrically to the point, raw and honest, I don't write in riddles or use analogies... I tell it like it is!
Naturally the title Blank Check, Volume I makes you think that a volume II is coming in the near future. Is there some sort of larger concept behind this record?
Bizzythowed: Blank Check was actually the name of the band before i changed it to Bizzythowed. Blank Check is a concept of my years in the music industry paying my dues... the years struggling and being broke but still sticking to what you know and that’s continuing playing the guitar and writing music and the success and ups and downs and the women and the drugs and the studio life and traveling... Checking the minds of the Blank... Yes there will be a volume II. Blank Check is my ghetto punk rock, it’s my hood metal music, it’s my "I don't give a fuck I'm going to make what I want." It’s a statement... It’s a middle finger to rules and what society says we are supposed to act or supposed to listen to or dress just because of your color or background... Blank Check is no bridges, no songs longer that 4:20 mins to songs that are to the point melodic musical and an emotional roller coaster.
Interestingly, you have played as a guitarist on late night shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Live with Regis and Kelly. These aren’t places I’d expect a hard rocker, hip'hop dude to wind up. How did these appearances come about?
Bizzythowed: I played on those shows with an artist I was working with at the time. He is a rapper who had a smash hit at the time and the production team I was working with at that time produced that song. We also had a rock band which was an earlier version of what Bizzythowed is. The artist loved hearing us practice at our studio in Miami and he invited us to perform with him on his televised appearances. Those shows were so awesome... we literally had never performed locally before going on Kimmel for the first time. After that show we were getting a million plays a day, it was awesome!
Where do you see your career going in the more distant future? As more of a solo artist, touring musician or a producer lending his insights to other artists?
Bizzythowed: I see myself doing all of those things... in the future... right now I'm focused more on my solo artist career, but I will always produce and work in the studio with artists established and new. I have spent the last decade of my life in that role so now I'm going to be my own artist for a while! I can definitely be someone like Pharrell who works with top artists and also releases his own projects like he did with NERD and his solo work.
You have an awesome story and it sounds like things are going great for you right now. Tell us what Bizzythowed has in store for the near future.
Bizzythowed: Bizzythowed is going to continue to establish itself as a band and brand releasing kick-ass music and vids, doing more shows, and showing people a good time and a way to release their inhibitions. - Aaron Willschick
Valentine’s Day can be a rush. The mix of feelings with an intense sugar high can be a lot to handle. In fact, you might need a smooth come down. At least one Houston native is looking out for you this year.
Bizzythowed may be a new name to you, but his output shouldn’t be. He’s clocked in work with The Weeknd, Nicki Minaj, Fabolous, and French Montana, and appeared as a guitarist on Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Regis and Kelly. Now he’s ready to make his foray as a solo artist.
“GTBO” provides a look into Bizzythowed’s forthcoming EP, Blank Check, Vol. 1, with an audio representation of a ’90s Bonnie and Clyde driving in a hot-wired jalopy through the Sonoran Desert. The guitars and drums from the Berklee School of Music alumnus saunter on as he promises a wild night of unrestricted behavior. While “GTBO” starts out intimately with minimal instrumentation, his rock influences ultimately come through, especially in the bold guitar solo at the end. - Mass Appeal

Brandon “Bizzy” Hollemon, better known as master guitarist and music junkie Bizzythowed is an emerging artist you’ve already heard, already seen, and already completely dig – you just may not know it yet. He’s played on Kimmel and Leno, and collaborated with artists like Nicki Minaj, Flo-Rida, Fabolous, even on the Grammy- nominated album Kiss Land from The Weeknd. And he’s done it his way – from working his way through the prestigious Berklee College of Music, to fronting bands like Purple Popcorn and creating his own production company, Mean Stringz Entertainment. We believe him when he says his sound “has no boundaries and no constraints…it’s a combination of all the different music styles I enjoyed growing up and it’s my unique way I interpret them.” And as if we weren’t already big enough fans…Bizzythowed is also a diehard lifelong WWE fan. He could friggin’ work here.
Anyway, we had the chance to talk with Bizzy about his latest record, a collection titled Blank Check, Volume 1. It’s a great mix of his influences from genres like hard rock, pop, rap, and blues – an effort he describes best: “It’s just the beginning of my solo work…fans can expect a raw honest look into my life and experiences and what goes on in my head and I know a lot of people out there are feeling the same way. Musically it’s a stripped down sound featuring drums, bass and guitar and me on vocals. I wrote all of the songs and lyrics and played the guitars and bass and had a drummer come in and record the live drums. The songs are short and sweet; the arrangements and songs were constructed that way on purpose. I have many other songs in different formats but for this project I wanted it to be just like this.” Click to http://www.bizzythowed.com/ to check out Blank Check, Volume 1 and prepare for so much more from Bizzythowed – this guy is just getting started. Now, keep reading. There’s still a lot to dive into in all the answers to the XXQs below.
XXQs: Bizzythowed
PensEyeView.com (PEV): How would you describe your sound and what makes you stand out from others in your genre?
Bizzythowed: My sound is a sound that has no boundaries and no constraints…it’s a combination of all the different music styles I enjoyed growing up and it’s my unique way I interpret them into the songs I write for myself. This particular project is Hard Rock with elements of metal and pop music and rap and R&B and blues and southern rock and it’s all into one project. What makes it different is my unique way of interpreting it and presenting it…it hasn’t been done this way and presented from my perspective.
PEV: What kind of music were you into growing up? Do you remember your first concert?
Bizzythowed: My mom and dad were into classic rock. My dad also liked gangster rap when it first came out. He also liked Gino Vannelli and Curtis Mayfield and Black Sabbath…so those are things I remember before i knew what I liked myself…my older sister listened to what was on the radio in the 80’s and early 90’s so I was into that as well (not realizing it)…MTV of course and Headbangers Ball and YO MTV Raps and TRL was huge…also the Houston local rap scene at the time when DJ Screw was just getting started and had the whole city listening to music slowed down. I liked everything that was aggressive or had a jamming beat or melody to it – some emotion to it…
PEV: What was it like trying to break into the music scene when you first started? What was your first show like?
Bizzythowed: It’s never easy but I would like to say I was prepared from years of guitar lessons and being in school band. Learning and knowing music theory and competition from a early age, getting accepted into Berklee and what I learned from class and my peers; I feel like (as far as being a musician) I was ready but the other aspects of the game and being successful didn’t come as easy…I’ve had many first shows going way back to elementary school and different bands I’ve been in over the years but every show I still get nervous and butterflies in my belly like it’s the first one so I still get that feeling every time before I play that first note.
PEV: What can fans expect from a live Bizzythowed show?
Bizzythowed: A raw emotional rollercoaster…its loud at times, its fast it’s slow it’s emotional it’s angry it’s funny and it’s honest. No samples, all instruments are played live so every show is different and I like that.
PEV: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you step on stage to perform?
Bizzythowed: I’m always nervous and I’m thinking about hitting that first note on the guitar or vocally in the right key…that everyone can hear each other…that the audience can hear and everything is clear. I think those things all go on at once in my head during the first song…
PEV: What is the best part about being on stage in front of an audience?
Bizzythowed: The high from that feeling of performing in front of people is addictive and I want to do it again right after I am done…knowing you are giving them enjoyment from the songs you wrote and to see their acceptance of them is an emotional feeling especially when they ask for an encore…
PEV: What is the underlying inspiration for your music?
Bizzythowed: Just to make people feel something…to inspire people that they can go after their dreams as well and be successful at it. I always feel like I have to prove something so that’s also something – to prove I can do it myself…
Thinking back to when you first started out, do you ever look back on your career and think about your earlier days and how you’ve arrived where you are today?
Bizzythowed: Of course I do…some days I’ll wake up and start from the beginning listening to my first placement and I’ll work my way up till now…I forget sometimes it’s been such a crazy ride…it takes about two days to go through the chapters I’ve had in this game but afterwards it reminds me of how far I’ve come on days I’m feeling low or things are going slow.
PEV: What’s one thing we’d be surprised to hear about you?
Bizzythowed: I’m a diehard lifelong WWE fan…
PEV: What happens when you hit a brick wall when writing? What are your methods to get over it?
Bizzythowed: As a professional and working through a deadline there are many methods to get the juices flowing…some natural and some aren’t (laughing)…I’ve tried them all…depends on the situation but as a professional I can dig deep and find a source of inspiration no matter because that’s what I’m paid to do.
PEV: How do you think the industry has changed since you first started out?
Bizzythowed: Oh so many ways…from the styles to the music to the business…CDs and record stores were my thing growing up…I’d spend all day listening to albums and reading album covers and midnight releases…now its digital and CDs are almost fully gone…Social Media and the popularity game that goes with that and followers etc…
PEV: What can fans expect from your latest release, Blank Check, Volume 1? What was the writing process like for this work?
Bizzythowed: It’s just the beginning of my solo work…fans can expect a raw honest look into my life and experiences and what goes on in my head and I know a lot of people out there are feeling the same way. I have many other songs in different formats but for this project I wanted it to be just like this.
PEV: With all your traveling, is there one area you wish you could travel around and play that you have not yet?
Bizzythowed: I want to play the world…China, Tokyo, England, you name it!!
PEV: How have all your friends and family reacted to your career?
Bizzythowed: My family have always been supportive and rooting for me…they don’t always fully understand exactly what it is that I’m doing or working on but they have known me my whole life and remember the early days and know how deep my passion and love for music goes and the sacrifices I have made.
PEV: What can we find you doing in your spare time, aside from playing/writing music?
Bizzythowed: I love to travel in my spare time – I love dive bars, music and hippy festivals, checking out live shows, WWE, theme parks and roller coasters, partaking in 420 every day and spending time with my loved ones and my family.
PEV: Name one present and past artist or group that would be your dream collaboration. Why?
Bizzythowed: Well I’ve worked with a lot of established artists and legends already in my career but I guess me and Lenny would be a super dope colab or me and Gary Clark Jr. doing something super bad ass. Prince would have been one as well who just passed away recently.
PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?
Bizzythowed: Yea – BIZZYTHOWED.
PEV: If playing music wasn’t your life (or life’s goal), what would you do for a career?
Bizzythowed: I really don’t know…I’ve thought about that a lot…I guess I would be a computer tech or a business man or something…
PEV: So, what is next for Bizzythowed?
Bizzythowed: Just going to continue to do shows and provide content and step up my game and look for ways to pay for all the shit I want to do…I will also continue to work with artists on the level as The Weeknd and Nicki Minaj as I have done throughout my career…so I have a lot to accomplish in a short amount of time…I’m focused!!!

What got you started in music?
Initially, I went to a music and science academy when I was in elementary school and, in second grade, they make you take general music and they teach you how to keep time and tempo and things like that and you pick your instrument and so I picked the trombone and I excelled at it; it came naturally, I was good at it, and that started my love for playing music. I really enjoyed concert band, I enjoyed competition and all the things that came along with it and I was first chair.
Now, as far as guitar goes, my dad was a rocker. I grew up listening to a lot of classic rock with my father and when he passed away I was 12 and my mom put me in all kinds of extracurricular things to keep my mind off of that, so everyday after school I had gymnastics, I was playing football, I was in band, all these things. Out of a tribute for my dad, 'cause he loved rock, I was like, 'hey mom, I wanna learn guitar'. I always thought, watching MTV and watching the music videos in the late '80s and '90s, guitar always looked cool to me and I just thought, 'hey, I wanna take guitar lessons'. So, my mom bought me a guitar and I started taking lessons every Saturday on the weekends and, same thing, it just came to me naturally. There was even a part in my life where my mom - my mom is an attorney and my mom was in law school at the time - she couldn't afford guitar lessons and she told my guitar teacher, you know, 'I might not be able to have him come this month,' and my guitar teacher offered to teach me for free because I was his best student; from that point on he would pick me up from school, he'd help me with my math homework, all these things because he believed in me, and I guess that's kind of how I started.
Then, when it came time to say, 'okay, what are you going to do with your life?' I just wanted to move to LA and become a rock star at 17 [laughs], but my mom, being a lawyer, was like, 'you gotta go to school and do something,' so, for me in order to stick it to her, I majored in guitar, but I got into Berklee College of Music; I auditioned, I got in, and my last guitar teacher was a Berklee alum so he helped me get in and helped me with my recommendation letters and all that stuff.
Which musicians have you been influenced by?
In the beginning, it was Metallica - James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett - Kurt Cobain, Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains, Dave Mustaine, and just a lot of hard rock musicians, early on. Then, as I got older, I went through my Bob Marley phase, discovered him; I discovered my Jimi Hendrix phase and I was deep into his vibe; then I went through Prince and Lenny Kravitz. I'd say, nowadays, now that I make music and I've been making music and getting placements for over a decade, same thing, I still pull from my older influences. Bowie's a huge influence, obviously; Bowie was huge growing up, my dad liked a lot of Bowie. Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant - all the older guys. David Gilmour from Pink Floyd was huge, love his stuff. I pull from everything, everybody. I could go on and on for hours about people who influence me [laughs].
Any current artists you would recommend to your listeners?
I love Kanye West and what he's doing; I think he's a genius and, obviously, people either love him or hate him [laughs] and I think that comes with genius. Some people don't respect or get what he does, so I think, Kanye West, his stuff is good right now. I love The Internet, they're young, they're good. I like Rae Sremmurd, they're really good. As far as rock goes, I've always liked Sevendust, their new album Kill The Flaw is really, really good, I'm feeling that, a lot.
How would you describe your own sound?
I mean, I just call it urban hard rock. I grew up in the streets and I grew up with that dual life; my dad was a street dude, my mom was a bookworm, became a lawyer, so I got the best of both things. It's the same thing, growing up listening to gangster rap and growing up listening to heavy metal, hardcore, different types of music; it's just my way of combining those things, something I've always done. I guess I could say urban hard rock, urban alternative rock, ghetto metal [laughs], hood rock. [Laughs] But, politically correct, urban hard rock.
What inspired your single, "Nothing You Can Do About It"?
The song "Nothing You Can Do About It" is one of those songs about letting go. It's being in a situation you maybe know is not healthy for you or maybe it's no longer beneficial to you, whatever reason, this is you taking that stand. If it's a bad, toxic relationship, a bad job that you're not going anywhere in, things like that, it's like, okay, my mind's made up, my bags are packed up, I'm going away [laughs]. The first part is, you realize life is crazy and, if you get caught up in it, you'll become a slave and you'll always be unhappy unless you take that chance, that one choice, and you remove yourself from what it is that's holding you back or what you feel is deterring you. That's kind of what "Nothing You Can Do About It" is, because it's like, once my mind's made up and I know this is wrong and I'm making a difference, I don't care what you say.
That's the first single from your forthcoming album, Blank Check, Volume 1, could you tell us more about that album?
Well, Blank Check, Volume 1 is a culmination of all my experiences from living in Houston, Miami, and LA and being in the music industry for the last decade, behind the scenes, [laughs] the good things and the bad things that come along with it; the debauchery, the drug use, the experimentation, the relationships with friends that come and go, the people who you can and can't trust: these are all issues that I cover, as far as Blank Check, Volume 1. It's autobiographical for me. It's basically my life, the last ten years, summed up. It's good music, it's real good music too, because the whole point of Blank Check is, it's about freedom, no restraints. When you're with me or you're listening to my music, I don't want you to think about rules, I don't want you to think about what society thinks of you, I just want you to be completely free to do whatever the fuck you wanna do [laughs] and that's the same thing when you come to my show. When you come to my show I want you to laugh, I want you to cry, I want you to get your frustrations out, I want you to grab that girl next to you and tell her you wanna be with her [laughs].
Do you have a favorite song to play live?
I think one of my favorite songs to play live is, definitely, "Life Is Here", which is a song which will be included on the album, but that song is very powerful to play live. I like playing "Nothing You Can Do About It", too, it's a good song live; I like to end my shows with that song.
What do you hope your listeners are able to take away from your music?
I just hope they're able to get something out of it, emotionally. I want music to make people feel and make people come away thinking about whatever thought that song invoked and that's what I want, I want people to hear the honesty and the rawness in it. I want people to hear the truthfulness in it.
Is there anything you want to add?
I have a show next Tuesday at The Viper Room out here in LA and if you wanna come check me out live, I'll be there playing at 10. - The Music Rag
Memories of SXSW feature - Hype Machine
To perform at SXSW was something I’ve always wanted to do. To have my first time performing and have multiple shows each day is a blessing. Everyone was positive and receptive to my sound, and the sound was great on all of the stages. Kudos to the staff. For me, performing at Emo’s and performing a private showcase for Randy Jackson were definitely two highlights I will never forget!! - The Revue (Staff)
Review Fix chats with Urban hard rocker, Bizzythowed, who discusses his new LP, Blank Check, Volume I, which is set for an April 8th release, Blank Check, Volume I is the debut full-length from the Texas-based writer/producer, who has worked alongside The Weeknd, Nicki Minaj and Fabolous.
Review Fix: How did it feel to play Jimmy Fallon?
Bizzythowed: It was nerve racking because it was one of our first shows ever and it was going to be on live Tv broadcast to millions. Afterwards, it was an awesome and great experience.
Review Fix: What are your goals for this LP?
Bizzythowed: My goals are to get my band established performing and releasing quality content. This LP is to get the ball rolling so to speak. My arrival as an artist.
Review Fix: How was “Life is Here” written?
Bizzythowed: Is there a story behind it? “Life is Here” is a song about not wasting time and a reminded that time is constant and to follow you dreams now because it will be harder to do so if you wait too long.
Review Fix: Is there another standout song on the EP?
Bizzythowed: I like them all but “Nothing you Can Do About It” definitely stands out to me.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you?
Bizzythowed: It’s raw and honest and gritty. It’s a gumbo pot of hard rock music, rocking guitars and banging beats and to the point lyrics. It’s everything you like and nothing you hate.
Review Fix: What makes this album a special one?
Bizzythowed: It’s my first one so it’s definitely special to me.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Bizzythowed: Blank Check Volume 2 will be here shortly and another compilation project as well. - Review Fix
Hardrocker Bizzythowed drops brand new video for his single, "Life Is Here", from his latest EP, Blank Check Vol 1. - Solo Vibes Music
Do you ♥ Bizzythowed? If so, you’ll be happy to hear we’re premiering his brand new music video, right here on idobi.com. The video accompanies the song “Life Is Here”, and you can check it out below!
Taken from his latest release, an EP titled Blank Check, Volume 1, the track showcases the urban grit that is Bizzythowed’s signature sound. View it below! - Idobi Radio
Luckily, Bizzythowed showed up next to cleanse our hip-hop palate before Guilla’s main course was served. Bizzy is an interesting character — the Third Ward native has worked in the studio with the likes of the Weeknd and Nicki Minaj, but he also happens to sing and play a mean guitar as well. Backed by live drums and bass, he had Raven Tower rocking hard with some heavy, Rage Against the Machine-inspired riffs on his flame-top Gibson. It wasn’t all headbanging, though: A searing guitar solo performed with his teeth melted into an easy, reggae skank that raised a few eyebrows under the awning.
“I’m from Houston; I like to chill out and smoke my weed,” offered Bizzythowed as a fairly acceptable explanation/apology. - Houston Press
It astounds me that the pool of talent in Houston feels like it stands above other cities, and yet can still go unnoticed. Recently, when Brandon Holleman, also known as Bizzythowed received a Grammy for his work with The Weeknd, no one in Houston seemed to sing the Houston native’s praises. The producer, performer, and multi-instrumentalist has been putting his touch on tracks for acts like The Weeknd, Nicki Minaj, Pitbull, and many more for the last decade while toiling away on his own projects in the interim. On his new EP, “Blank Check Vol 1,” the Berklee College of Music graduate mixes soulful guitar, trippy lyricism, and multiple genres to craft his own unique sound. On Saturday, April 16th he’ll bring those tunes and more to life when he plays Raven Tower at the Guilla album release party. FPH sat down with him to get to know him better, and introduce this city to someone who’s been making moves for the past 15 years.
FPH: For those who don’t know, can you explain the name Bizzythowed?
BIZZYTHOWED: Bizzythowed is the name of my Band I’m usually just known as Bizzy… It was given to me when I was in high school by one of my cousin’s best friends because I was always on the go… which is still the case these days, so the Bizzy nickname stuck with me.
Thowed is a word I have always liked as a youngster growing up in 3rd ward Houston and its meaning is something that I also really dig. Thowed is a word used to describe something really great or nice and it is also a word used to describe the mental state of being really High… I and my music are both of those things… so you put that together and you get BIZZYTHOWED
FPH: You’ve been playing guitar for a long time, can you run through the highlight reel of what all you’ve worked on and contributed to?
BIZZYTHOWED: I’ve been a songwriter, producer, and session player for a while in the industry and I’ve been blessed to have been apart of some great projects and worked closely with some great legends in music and also artists at the top of their game right now. Obviously my first major placement with 8Ball and MJG will be a highlight. The song is called “Trying To Get At You,” and it’s on the “Living Legends” album (2004). It was the first time I would see with my name in the cd liner notes credited as part of a album and the first time my music would be in stores. One time I found a copy of that album in Paris and it tripped me out. I did another 8Ball and MJG album and I also played and wrote on two Trick Daddy Albums, Pitbull’s second album, Flo Rida’s first album. I got to work with a new artist at the time named Mims and I ended up writing the rock remix to his smash hit “This is Why I’m Hot” with “This Is Why I Rock” and I got to debut it with him in front of millions of people on Jimmy Kimmel Live and also on The Tonight Show, and Regis and Kelly but it was a guest host instead with Kelly. The song was featured on a Microsoft commercial played everyday it was a huge hit and a huge moment for me as a performer and a songwriter. I also got to work on Nicki Minaj’s first album which was Grammy Nominated. I did a song on Fabolous’ “Loso’s Way” project. I worked with Belly who is now signed with Roc Nation and I ended up meeting a young talented singer named Abel or known to everyone as The Weeknd. I contributed guitars and bass on all of “Kiss Land” and he gave me my first single with “Pretty” which I co-wrote with him in a studio in LA in 2011. I continued to work with him over the next four years contributing guitars on many singles and finally the Best Urban Contemporary Album Grammy Winning and record breaking “Beauty Behind The Madness.” It was such a good feeling to finally win something.
FPH: Winning a Grammy for working with someone else is one thing, but working on and releasing your own work must be rewarding. Can you explain the concept behind your latest release, “Blank Check, Volume 1,” ?
BIZZYTHOWED: It is a rewarding thing to finally be apart of something that is awarded and cherished by people and a artist that has risen so fast. Of course I am proud of my contributions to making that happen and I will continue to contribute to the success of other artists as time goes on. But yes, working on and releasing my own music feels good and is rewarding. After all of those years working and creating in a certain vibe and a certain sound and style it’s good to do something totally different. I wanted to rock the fuck out, but make it jamming with elements of fun and pop and hip hop and metal sometimes all in the same song. You know, something that you can really nod your head to. Music you can smoke a blunt to and get rowdy to and fuck a bitch to or think about your life to. Just honest raw music.. no riddles or analogies is what it is musically and lyrically. I’m having fun just singing and performing my songs and people are digging it and it feels good because I really didn’t have any major intentions other than to just do something myself and actually put it out the right way and perform it. “Blank Check Volume 1” is that, and here will also be a Volume 2 dropping in June alongside a compilation project dropping afterwards featuring some of Houston’s finest.
FPH: You recorded some of the album here in Houston, was it just you and the mixing console, or did you collaborate with others on it?
BIZZYTHOWED: I recorded the album in Miami, LA, NYC, and Houston. I mostly did it myself, though I had a drummer come in and play some parts. But I recorded all of the guitars and bass i mixed the record and had it mastered in Houston.
FPH: Growing up in Houston, living all over the place, did you ever think you’d get to where you are today?
BIZZYTHOWED: I did and I didn’t. It’s like when you are a kid and you want to be a fighter pilot, a rock star, or an astronaut….and then you grow up. Well for me I never gave up on that childhood fantasy. I saw something I wanted to become and I went on an almost life long journey to prepare to be that person and it took me all over the world gaining the knowledge and experience to really fill that role and be that person. I just never gave up and let it go as most people do. Something in me wouldn’t allow me to do anything else other than what i set out to do all those years ago and that’s become known and respected for my music.
FPH: What should people expect from your live set at Raven Tower?
BIZZYTHOWED: Expect something raw, honest and entertaining. It’s from the heart and the listener will feel it. It will be electric, dynamic, and genre bending…definitely something to witness in person. Come and release your frustrations and inhibitions, come meet a new hot lady to take home, come and discover your new favorite artists.
He’s certainly one of those artists that every Houstonian should know and one that everyone needs to catch perform live. You can catch Bizzythowed on April 16th, when he performs on the “Children of The Sun” album release party alongside Guilla, Kyle Hubbard, Mojave Red, and more at Raven Tower. The 100% FREE show is all ages and will also feature DJ sets from ILL Faded and Mark Drew with doors at 6:00. - Free Press Houston

Bizzythowed
By Harriet Kaplan
Urban hard-rocker, Bizzythowed, has new single out, “GTBO,” which is from his forthcoming EP, Blank Check, Volume I, due out April 8. The Texas-based writer/producer has also played guitar on Grammy-award winner, The Weeknd’s, album Beauty Behind the Madness (“Best Urban Contemporary Album”). Bizzythowed has worked alongside some of the music industry’s biggest names, including Nicki Minaj and Fabolous. Bizzythowed just got back from performing at SXSW for the first time and discussed how that felt as a newcomer, his observations of the scene and playing in front of massive audiences there with BoC. He also spoke about he came to be a singer/songwriter, his work as a support player working other established artists, what influenced the sound of Blank Check, Volume I and more.
INTERVIEW
What did playing SXSW mean to you as artist and musician? What was the experience like? Was it your first time performing there?
Bizzythowed: It was my first time performing and it was awesome!!! I was blessed to have official and unofficial shows and play in front of some pretty diverse crowds. We played metal shows and hiphop shows same set and everyone liked it so it was very rewarding to have such a positive feedback. As a artist, it means a lot, being a especially being a Texan, it’s something you feel you must do as a artist. I had been denied before with my previous band so to get a invite and go and perform and get such a positive reaction is a dream come true!!
Did you go from playing with other artists to becoming an artist or were you always artist writing your own songs?
Bizzythowed: I’ve always been a songwriter. I’ve been writing songs since i was a young kid I’ve always saw myself as a artist. But early in my career, I was lending my songs and riffs to more established artists because they were closer to making it than I was so I figured it I support them then I will win as well and build up my catalog etc.
What did you take from working with other artists as a support player to take into forging your own career? Did they give you any advise?
Bizzythowed: I learned how to respect the people who are all there to support and help you to be the best artist you can be. To remain humble because it can all go away in a heartbeat and appreciate the moment. I take advice from the legends. I’m sometimes blessed to share space with and I def listen to those guys who paved the way.
What was it like playing in front of huge crowds?
Bizzythowed: Whether its a million or five people, I play with the same passion. But when you get through the first song, and you hear that pop from the audience of hundreds or thousands, there is nothing like it in the world – that feeling, and to have the audience call for a encore is huge as well.
Was it through those high-profile connections you got into performing on late night TV? What were appearances like for you?
Bizzythowed: Well, I was working with a team of producers in Miami and we ended up producing the smash hit “This Is Why Im Hot” and we had a rock band at the time called “Purple Popcorn” and we did the rock remix which we debuted on Jimmy Kimmel Live. So it was more of a destiny moment, like the stars aligned, and it all happened from that one song, none of us ever thought that song would be that big. So when it came time for Mims to perform, he brought his favorite band with him at the time “Purple Popcorn.” Those were great experiences performing on live television with millions watching you all over the world – unreal.
What influenced Blank Check, Volume 1 musically? What are your musical influences? I see you are influenced by hip-hop and metal acts. Can you tell me more about that?
Bizzythowed: I grew up listening to Metallica, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Biohazard, Ghetto Boys, Tupac NWA and anything aggressive. As I got older, I softened up and became open to all styles of music. I just love to combine different styles especially emotional music.
What did you take away from attending Boston’s Berklee School of Music in developing your artistry?
Bizzythowed: Berklee was unreal because i was in there with some of the best musicians in the world. There were artists who were already established and then they decided to come to Berklee. I learned so much from my peers attending that school. Some of my friends are holding top positions right now and its awesome to see us all making our stamp.
Will you be touring to support the EP? What is next for?
Bizzythowed: I’ looking to do as many shows as I can. I want the shows to become second nature to me. The more I do, the better I get. I want to be one of the best at performing and give a raw, honest kick-ass show. - Black on the Canvas

For Bizzythowed, years of relentless grinding have paid off. Last Monday night his work on The Weeknd's acclaimed Beauty Behind the Madness album was recognized with a Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. This comes in the midst of Bizzy's stepping out as a solo artist with his soon to be released project Blank Check Volume I.
We sat down with him to get his perspective on this milestone of an achievement and his thoughts on the future of his music. Here's what he had to say...
"It's great to be recognized at such a level for being a part of an innovative artist's maturity and meteoric rise in the game. Even though it's a huge accomplishment, I will really feel fulfillment receiving a Bizzythowed Grammy someday soon."
Each time he achieves something great, his first thought is "what's next?" as if to say with an undoubted certainty that more mind-blowing moments lay ahead. Through all of his accomplishments in the industry he has stayed true to himself and his work. For artists of his status, many great opportunities come your way without solicitation. You can check out Bizzythowed on tour as he heads back to his home state of Texas to hit a few cities during the SXSW week of music.

Hi Bizzy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been Busy!! lol no pun intended.. I’m doing very well.. i feel great and blessed..
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Nothing You Can Do About It”?
It is a song about letting go… a song about forcing and creating change by removing yourself from negative situations. Its about me leaving negative situations or certain things that wasn’t getting me where i wanted to be in life and becoming strong enough to go off on my own and write and record and release my own record. Life is too short to waste years and time being used and abused by toxic people sucking away at your energy and giving you peanuts for it!!
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
It was a series of events… a culmination of events that led me to express myself that way in that song. Bad relationships bad business dealings and me freeing myself of those situations.
Can you tell us more about the upcoming video?
It will be raw and true like everything that it do it will be entertaining funny rebellious and authentic.
The single comes off your new EP Blank Check, Volume 1 – what’s the story behind the title?
Blank Check was actually the name of the band before i changed it to Bizzythowed. Blank Check is a concept of my years in the music industry paying my dues… the years struggling and being broke but still sticking to what I know and thats continuing playing the guitar and writing music and the success and ups and downs and the women and the drugs and the studio life and traveling friendships coming and going….Checking the minds of the Blank…
How was the recording and writing process?
Well I started making it in Miami and I ended up in Los Angeles and from there i met the Weeknd and started working with him so obviously the project got put on hold for a few years. I traveled the world on my own during that time and had many experiences and growth so when i got back to Houston I started back on the project I ended up finishing what I started in Miami and LA before the Weeknd project and I call that Volume 1 because its mainly a raw guitar bass drums hard rock format with me doing vocals mainly… Vol 2 is more of a Electronic drums with electric guitar vibe.. more guest appearances from some of Houstons Finest and others performing over my music.
How has your hometown Houston and Miami have influence your sound?
Well from Miami’s standpoint I would say because thats where I came up with the concept of starting Blank Check with my former Purple Popcorn bandmates and wrote a lot of the foundations from Volume 1 there. Houston because its where I started Volume 2 and i decided to incorporate local artists and my sound took a different approach with the second Volume to show my other side.
How was the transition from Metal to Hip Hop?
Its a simple transition for me… once you fully understand music you realize that its all music… and depending on the rhythm and the choice of instruments the genre changes… hiphop is metal and vise versa… the boom or 808 main bass line in a hiphop song is the main riff in a metal song… thats how I see it anyways.
So I am guessing Volume 1 means we can expect a sequel?
Yes there will be a volume II Blank Check is my ghetto punk rock its my hood metal music its my i don’t give a fuck I’m going to make what i want. its a statement.. its a middle finger to rules and what society says we are supposed to act or supposed to listen to or dress just because of your color or background… Blank Check is no bridges no songs longer that 4:20 mins. Songs that are lyrically to the point raw and honest and the music is melodic musical and a emotional roller coaster.
Would both albums be connected?
I want to Release Volume 1 first and then Volume 2 separately and then release them together as sort of a series.
Any plans to hit the road?
Of course!!!
What else is happening next in Bizzythowed’s world?
Well expect my next single “GTBO” (Get these Bitches Open) to be coming out very soon and a video as well. SXSW shows are coming up 3/17-18 so check out bizzythowed.com for exact info. - Vents Magazine

I love Bizzythowed. Borrowing from alternative, hard rock, and hip-hop, he has made a name for himself, and he has the attitude to match. Thank God he has new material for us to enjoy. Recorded in Houston, TX and set for a mid-2016 release, Blank Check, Volume I is the debut full-length from the Texas-based writer/producer. Through lending production insight to artists and studios throughout Miami, Bizzythowed managed to secure late night appearances as a guitarist on Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Regis and Kelly. With his killer guitar work, and his screw you attitude, Bizzythowed makes music that is fresh and wonderful. What a killer. Thanks, guy. - Audio Fuzz

Bio
