Bio
Founded within University of the Arts' school of music, Bison's Big Bang is headed by saxophonist and composer Brian Blaker. The group is comprised of peers who have set a simple goal: to make meaningful music with friends. Originally a quintet, the ensemble's core is made up of guitarist Anthony DeCarlo, bassist Scott Ziegler and drummer Felix Manzi. Shortly after formation, Blaker's Dutch colleague Suzan Veneman, would add her unique and passionate voice on the trumpet to the group's sound. While these five individuals are regarded as the core group, local Philadelphia virtuosos Jon Smith (bass) and Anwar M. Marshall (drums) have filled in respectively.
Their music pulls greatly from the members' education within jazz music, however it plays on their individual experiences with contemporary music, adding in a unique and distinct elements from each member. While at the core of the group's sound is a jazz and improvisation base, it's often through a rock or hip-hop-like medium.
