Louisville rockers Bendigo Fletcher have a new EP on the way that blends lo-fi with their psych folk sound. The latest song from that release, "My Dad" is a swirling song that dances across the sonic kaleidoscopic spectrum. The haziness of its psych nature will ring in between your ears like a memorable trip.

"'My Dad,' the song, is about my dad, the man. I wrote it only minutes after first listening to 'Abbey Road' from front to back, and it’s fitting for that experience to have yielded a tribute to his influence on my imagination," singer/guitarist Ryan Anderson says. "As a kid, I’d sit in the passenger seat and listen to him sing harmony along with his favorite bands, which probably helped me to develop an appreciative ear. His range is Crosby-esque.

Shades of the aural folk rock that’s pervaded releases by the likes of Band of Horses and Fleet Foxes flow through Bendigo Fletcher’s debut EP as naturally as they wear their Kentuckian roots on their sleeves, but there’s more to them than that. The quintet has only been around for a little over a year, and already they are breaking ground in the indie folk circuit as one of the latest hot commodities. With tight harmonies, soaring instrumental bridges, and a knack for developing earworm melodies across a broad scope of musical styles, it isn’t much of a wonder why that is.

“We chose this collection of songs as a sampler of our sound, and responses to our folk, pop, and psych rock influences are apparent throughout. They were also the four most polished at the time we decided to record an EP, which took place at the humble home of Bud Carroll in Huntington, West Virginia,” lead vocalist and guitarist Ryan Anderson says.

“Simply put, Bud has a killer ear for what works and what clashes, and his appreciation for raw honesty and space between the parts really benefited us to honing in on our sound. The fun hasn’t let up since we left the mountains exhausted and so full of love and fast food.” - PopMatters

Bendigo Fletcher are only just now establishing a following in their hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, but spend some time listening to their heady blend of psych-folk and Americana and you’ll quickly realize these young fellows are on to something special. This is saying something considering they have only been a band since April of 2016. The quintet counts the likes of The Byrds and John Prine as influences, and their sound also brings to mind more modern acts like the Felice Brothers and Dr. Dog.

With an EP on the way, the group has a catchy new single called “Sleeping Pad”, which we are excited to premiere on Glide today. “Sleeping Pad” came to singer/guitarist Ryan Anderson during a walk through the Kentucky woods. The song is one of the most Americana-leaning tracks on the upcoming EP, if only for the lush fiddle lines that punctuate the vocals. Ultimately, this is a folk inspired homage to the historic wilds of Kentucky that never fail to pick him up when he’s down.

Offering his own thoughts on the song, Ryan Anderson has this to say:

“‘Sleeping Pad’ is the first song we played as a full band, so it made sense as our first release. We’re also stern advocates of sufficient rest above all else. The simplicity of the song lets us sort of check out of our heads and into ‘the zone’ during a long basement practice or a tough week otherwise, and that pays homage to the song’s subject matter of escaping the occasional funk with a little self love and reflection. We did our best to capture the restorative energy of the song thanks much in part to Huntington’s Bud Carroll, who demanded that we give only what we had during a starry-eyed October weekend at his home studio.” - Glide Magazine

I caught the latter half of Bendigo Fletcher’s appearance on the latest episode of WRFL-Live! – they’re a relatively new five-piece from Louisville, Kentucky. I hadn’t heard of the group before, but enjoyed what they played that night on the radio. Their songs were spirited, loose, and unusually uninhibited. Somewhere, towards the end of their set, they mentioned they were playing a show over the weekend with Lexington’s Johnny Conqueroo, and that they’d be marking the occasion with the release of their first single – a song called “Sleeping Pad.”

The track is the first they’ve released as a band, serving to tide their fans over until the release of their debut EP (coming somewhere in the fairly near future, perhaps?) Ryan Anderson, singer for the group, paints a simple, comforting picture of lying down for a well-deserved rest. The bright verses are punctuated with verses full of momentum, which in turn give way to instrumental breaks on guitar and violin – all sections of the song have enough space to breathe and develop. Songs like this seem to come out quite a bit less often than those about dark, difficult subjects; though perhaps we could all use the occasional musical reminder of the importance of a good night’s sleep and proper self-care. If you’ve got a beautiful vocal melody then the addition of a few gentle strums of the guitar and some light percussion are all you need for a great introduction. Bendigo Fletcher prove themselves masters of song arrangement by getting my interest right from the very first few seconds. It’s a skill that surprisingly few bands really get the hang of.

Sleeping Pad, released on the 3rd March, is a funky piece of folk rock that avoids all the clichés you’d expect from that genre while incorporating familiar elements such as violin and acoustic guitars. The freshness of the melody, coupled with the gorgeously laid-back yet earnest lead vocal just had me grinning from start to finish on this one.

Bendigo Fletcher come from Louisville in Kentucky. The group is made up of five members – Ryan Anderson, Evan Wagner, Sarah Brower, Josh Harshbarger and Chris Weis. I think they’re going to be huge and I hope they can come to Europe soon for some live gigs. - Fresh On The Net
