WeiWei is an Asian American Pop Singer/Songwriter based in N.Y.C. Originally born in Changsha, China her family moved to the U.S. when she was 4 years old. WeiWei was a talented musical prodigy as a child, playing violin, piano and guitar; even then she thought she could make music her life’s ambition. Her mother, however, may have had other ideas! WeiWei says she was a stereotypical “tiger mom” and being a Pop star was not an option in her household. But although starting out with a conventional ‘mom approved’ career, WeiWei decided to follow her musical dreams.
After moving to New York from Massachusetts, she started her career started in NYC Tech as a Technology & Management Consultant then moved on to become a Data Scientist. Music had always been her calling but grappled with the internal battle of wanting stability but also wanting to chase her dreams so she took a “passion year” to figure herself out creatively. She started writing songs and her first single, ‘Forever’, was released in 2018 which started her music career. WeiWei has since performed at well-known NYC venues such as Pianos and the Delancey.
WeiWei’s music is autobiographical and her sound is electro/synth pop and as an artist she envisions herself as being the first Asian-American name in pop music that isn’t under the ‘K-Pop’ banner- but is regarded as mainstream American Pop. Not only is WeiWei a musician but also a fashion influencer whose aesthetic, both musically and visually, really communicates her personality. Her music is not only representative of her story but also of freedom from cultural boundaries simply by the pursuit of it. She writes about the emotions we all move through in life (love, jealousy, regret) in a fun, consumable and simplistic manner.
Her latest single, ‘Human Being’, is about taking someone for granted then later realizing it. We have to forgive others and ourselves for not being perfect. WeiWei says: “Human Being is about having someone in your life that tried their best for you but not seeing it at the time. You wanted them to be perfect but they are only human. You also have to also forgive yourself for behaving that way because you are only human too. We all aim for perfection but make mistakes and have regrets. That is part of the human experience.”
The video was shot on Super 8 film and the directors are Maria and Ximena Prieto (daughters of Rodrigo Prieto, DP of Brokeback Mountain and Wolf of Wallstreet). The shoot took place in Ellen Kuras DP of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’s house in Nyack. - Vents Magazine

Asian American Pop Singer/Songwriter WeiWei releases single 'Human Being' - Press Party
As Wei Wei’s icy cool, synth-pop sweeps over you, it’s hard to imagine her a few short years ago working as a Data Scientist, the sound is more akin to music created from dancing in uber-hip NY nightclubs till the small hours; edgy, fun, cool… but accessible.
A musical prodigy originally denied her calling, Wei Wei is now rightfully making her own music, an Asian-American mainstream fusion for adults that is definitely and thankfully, not ‘K-Pop’. She released her first single ‘Forever' last year.
Her latest single, ‘Human Being’, is about taking someone for granted then later realizing it. “We have to forgive others and ourselves for not being perfect”, she says. Very holistic and insightful and let's face it: true. We can all relate to her mantra - especially in this current climate of hate and blame. It's the least we can do as human beings - to deny our baser instincts and rise above them.
Wei Wei writes what she knows, love, jealousy & regret, searing through the speakers and onto the dancefloor in the coolest way imaginable... - Subba Cultcha
The likes of Robyn, MUNA, and Mark Ronson have proved there’s nothing wrong with a tearjerker in the form of an absolute dancefloor bop, and we can add New York-based WeiWei to that list now thanks to her latest single ‘Human Being’.
Released just in time to be swooped all over dancefloors this weekend for WorldPride in New York, ‘Human Being’ is about taking someone for granted then later realizing it. “Sorry that I hurt you, I didn’t mean to hurt you, love can really be crazy,” sings WeiWei in the Vogue-worthy house track. - Qweerist
