"What's Next"

If you're gonna give yourself a name like Verbal Van Gogh, you'd better be ready to bring the ruckus when the mic lands in your hands. We're happy to report that the Charlotte rapper more than lives up to the handle. He was smart to bring along a friend, because together with Elevator Jay, these two tear up the bass heavy track in fine fashion. The influence of the Dirty South is very evident in the track, but somewhere within the beat and the flows, we can't escape a heavy feeling of classic west coast hip-hop. Right on. - DigitalDJPool

"VvG - Ever Needed"

Fresh off a nationwide tour, Charlotte artist VvG hits our pages with a new banger. The rapper drops off this dope cut titled “Ever Needed.” Take a listen to the song before the jump. - MusicOnTheDot

"STREAM VVG’S ‘KING T.U.T.’ LP"

The full length project from the Currency Cartel member is here.

Charlotte native VvG comes through with a new project today titled KING T.U.T. Considering that he is the self proclaimed “RapGod”, the title is fitting. Coming in at 11 tracks, the project follows up his The Essence project, released last September and his #MME2K16 mixtape with DJ Moeezy.

VvG kept the features at a minimum with Lotta and Elevator Jay being the only voices heard outside of his. Lexi Banks, Ric and Thadeus, Mr. Kooman and Stacks A. Million hold down production.

Stream the project below and head here to cop. - J.Goode

"VVG BRINGS ‘THE ESSENCE’ OF HIP-HOP BACK ON HIS NEW EP"

After showing us the difference between dreams and reality on Reality Of A Dreamworld and waking us up on The Great Awakening, VvG takes things back to The Essence on his latest EP. Coming in at 8 tracks (14 when you make a purchase here), the Charlotte, North Carolina native brings the raw and aggressive flow over the production of Tone Jonez, Lexi Banks, Kid Flash and more. - Str8OutDaDen

"VvG (Verbal van Gogh) WWS Mag Interview"

Exclusive Interview

Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
I am from the Eastside of Charlotte, NC (Hickory Grove to be exact) and I am an up-and-coming indie artist. I started rapping at the age of 11 just as a hobby and because I liked music so much. Over the years I got better and the amount of people checking for me as an artist was growing quickly. I dropped my first official mixtape in the summer of 2007 with my producer Stacks A. Million and it’s kinda just been on since then. 13 mixtapes later, we arrived at my last project, #TGA [2013], which was a real big success and I’m just looking to continue to build on that going forward as I do my part to restore the true culture of hip-hop music.

Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
This song is very special to me. It’s called Half My Life featuring Jade Jones. This song is from my latest CD, The Great Awakening [#TGA] and it’s produced by one of the most underrated producers in the game, Johnny Juliano. When I wrote the hook for this song I had a certain voice in mind which is why the song features Atlanta R&B artist Jade Jones. Jade and I worked together before and the chemistry was easily there so I figured let’s try it again. It’s a real inspirational song to anybody who is passionate about their craft or profession and basically anybody who is trying to become more than they currently are. Stack them dollars up!

Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
Realizing that there’s more so about the business than the music. If it wasn’t, a lot of these “rappers” wouldn’t even be out. I took it in stride and now look at it more as strictly business while still maintaining the integrity and authenticity of my music.

What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
In 2011 I did a tape with super-producer Natural Disaster called FEMA Fresh. We both felt that this was going to be a breakthrough tape for both of us but America really wasn’t quite ready for that kind of content. It had a big buzz with my core fans and opened the ears of plenty of new ones but it just didn’t reach the level we had planned. It reached about 35-40k downloads but we were envisioning more like 100-150k.

The content was very politically charged and that was the direction I wanted to take my music going forward but it was a little too over their heads. I wouldn’t consider that a setback, but it definitely was a wake-up to how the average hip-hop consumer thought. From there on I adjusted my approach to reach broader audiences while staying staying true to myself as an artist.

What are some things artists need to be careful of?
Jumping on fads. Making music that conforms to what everybody else is doing or whats popular at the moment instantly puts you in a box. A lot of people don’t realize that once that certain fad is gone, you may be too. The key to longevity is staying true to yourself.

What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
Don’t ever shortchange yourself. You get what you negotiate.

What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
Shows/performances. Performing, in my opinion, is the best way to personally connect with fans and receive feedback right on the spot. Performing also gives people a feel of who you are as a person outside of music because your stage presence and aura are being analyzed as well.

"VvG – S.O.S. Freestyle (prod. BanksOnTheBeat)"

I admit over the past couple of weeks, we’ve been slacking on the submissions but I finally got a chance to get back on it. As part of our freestyle contest (which is still going on), Verbal Van Gogh from Charlotte tackles the ‘S.O.S.’ instrumental produced by BanksOnTheBeat. This freestyle was pretty dope. Definitely going to have to check out his Fema Fresh II: 33rd Degree tape some time this week. - Daily Chiefers

"Rising Stars: Meet Verbal van Gogh"

Today we’d like to introduce you to Verbal van Gogh.

Verbal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Based out of Charlotte, NC, I started in the rap game as a battle rapper. At that time, it wasn’t as lucrative as it is now so naturally I transitioned to writing and recording. I started my own label Currency Cartel Ent in 2007. After my first couple of projects, I started performing locally and making videos. With buzz growing during the “Blog Era” I got a lot of opportunities across the country to perform and network such as A3c, SXSW, Revolt Conference, High Times Festival, etc. As of now, I’m 11 albums in and I’m set to release my new album “Invisible Bully 2” in August.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No path is a straight line. Along the way, there has been a lot of twist and turns. Being offered a record deal a few times and it not being what it needed to be was kind of a struggle for a moment. My biggest album to date, Calm B4 The Storm, was goin crazy right before the pandemic, which kind of halted things. All in all, everything in my career that was adversity made me better and push harder.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in REAL rap. No water added. There has been a resurgence in lyricism in the underground scene but not as much at the mainstream level. I’m the RapGod for a reason lol and I plan to bring back the TOP artists actually being good rappers and rap being more about life than just a slew of stereotypes being regurgitated. I also do alot of writing so I would definitely like to expand the number and caliber of artists I provide that service for.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
