"VISUALS debuts "The State of Things" EP"

Andrew Fox is a producer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist who has been constructing a distinct brand of electro-pop under the name VISUALS since the release of his debut self titled EP on Nicolas Jaar's OTHER PEOPLE imprint back in 2013. His experimental but mellowed out sound is in part due to frequent collaborator Dave Harrington, who handles a bulk of co-production on his projects and provides Fox with the ideal textural sound-bed to display his moody songwriting.
The Brooklyn native's latest opus is a 4-track EP entitled The State of Things that is set to be released on Berlin based label thesongsays on March 25th. This project is a diverse offering that begins with the self titled single "The State of Things", a pensive intro that sets the mood for the rest of the project with Fox's reflective verse over the bare-bones backdrop. The next track "Days of Our Youth" is a bit more upbeat indie-pop affair that might be his most straightforward dance track yet, even displaying some potential for the mainstream. The third track "No Handle" is a personal favorite due to it's lethargic, atmospheric instrumental which I suspect was somewhat influenced by associate and collaborator Nic Jaar. The final 'bonus' track off of the EP is a synth heavy ballad entitled "Everything Flash", which acts as a perfect closer to the project thanks to the interplay of the dense melodies with Fox's haunting vocal arrangements.

"THIS MUSICIAN IS BRIDGING BERLIN AND NYC SOUNDS WITH HIS NEW EP"

When most people move from the glitz and grime of New York to the gritty world of Berlin, Germany, they spend their time partying and enjoying the sexual freedoms that have punctuated the European city. For Brooklyn native Andrew Fox, the transition overseas was a reflective moment not only for him, but for his sound. “Every artist gets to have their ‘Berlin Period,” he explained. “These songs are from mine.” The producer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist who performs under the name VISUALS took the two years he lived in Berlin and put them on record for his new four-track EP, The State of Things. The result was a haunting new album that confronts the emotions and observations he felt while living abroad.

After growing up in New York, the move to Europe provided the fresh perspective he needed in order to grow as an artist. “New York will fuck with you, grind you down and lean into you. If you’re young, and hungry, you do your best to push past it,” he said. “And then you do push past it and you wonder…was it worth sacrificing ideas and creative freedoms to work within the system of NYC?” The question became the basis of his journey overseas. And after two years, this new album is the answer. Released on the Berlin label thesongsays, The State of Things transcends the the foundation he created in his self-titled debut back in 2013.

Breaking away from the thrashing psych rock and new wave sounds on his self-titled debut album, Fox’s latest effort incorporates the techno, house, and dub music that he was surrounded by in Berlin’s infamous club scene. “There’s obviously a ton of influence still from psych and new wave, but its less the spine of the songs. It’s more just part of the general DNA,” he explained. “It’s the midpoint, for me, between the sound of the two cities.” - MILK

"LISTEN TO VISUALS’ NEW SONG “A PIXEL,” PRODUCED BY NICOLAS JAAR"

Masterful producer Nicolas Jaar is always bringing us the best music, whether that’s his solo output, his Darkside project with David Harrington or his Other People label. That label is releasing a compilation called WORK on September 25, and one of the songs on it is “A Pixel.” We don’t know much about Visuals, the man behind this song, but we do know this collaboration with Jaar (who produced the track) and Harrington (who played guitar on it) is the sort of unique and quirky music that we’d like to hear more of. - PIgeons an Planes

"Visuals: Slowed Down"

Word is that Visuals are an NYC-based band, but their Soundcloud page states that they hail from Berlin, so maybe they like to keep us guessing. At the least, it would fit the sultry, cloudy-headed vibe of "Slowed Down", a track from their self-titled EP that's out via Nicolas Jaar's Other People label. (Jaar's other band, the highly fêted Darkside, produced the entire EP, too.) Head to the Other People site to stream two more Visuals songs, "Fifteen" and "Remote Control". - PItchfork

Bio

VISUALS is Andrew Fox, a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer from New York City.

Fox began crafting the songs that would become VISUALS in 2012. A long-standing working relationship with Dave Harrington, Nicolas Jaar's partner in DARKSIDE, led to VISUALS joining Jaar's Other People crew and releasing an acclaimed, self-titled debut EP.

In October 2013, Fox left Brooklyn for Berlin and left behind a studio full of gear, finding inspiration in the limitation of a laptop and a microphone. Working with his voice as a primary instrument led to an intensified focus on melody, and opened moods previously inaccessible.

Fox's position as a songwriter in the electronic world lends his work a freedom not usually enjoyed by those working within convention. He has honed a unique sound, combining aspects of traditional songwriting and structure within this electronic context. He expresses the emotional energy of our hyper-accelerated times through subtle lyrical content and diverse moods, using genre like any other instrument. VISUALS' remarkable vocals and singular production style and process mark him out as special talent.
