an Diego-born femcee, Velarde who is now repping Dallas, Texas, has just dropped the title track single off her upcoming EP. Riding high on the tail of her previous successful release “Light it up” – featuring JayArson and produced by Six Beatz – “HighSky” drips with smooth liquid soul. You’ll find Velarde doesn’t miss a beat, spitting her slow burning rhymes as Six Beatz once again paints a deep, sinuous beat for her to beautifully cling onto.
Velarde always makes everything she does seem effortless and fun while still owning her space. In fact she is acutely aware of how to market herself, how to juggle numerous styles and how to almost casually do things people will still be trying to catch up to years from now.
The things that I have heard her do so far are straight fire. I’m really glad she shows the want to become a presence in the rap forefront. She is vital and so many people could learn a thing or two from her, regardless of gender.
The new stoner-rap type tune, “HighSky”, seems to be a fitting buzz single, to promote her upcoming EP of the same name. With all things considered, the song is certainly a great sign for any fans of Velarde, Hip-Hop music in general, and especially for women in Hip-Hop.
Over the last decade, women in Hip-Hop haven’t been half as popular as they were in its heyday. Think back to the years between 1995-2005: Missy Elliott, Lil’ Kim, Eve, Foxy Brown, Trina, and more, all had simultaneous, successful runs – only Iggy Azalea and Nicki Minaj have seen similar mainstream success as their fellow femcee peers.
The release of the new Velarde single means more future music from her is to follow, in the form of an EP, which in turns means she’ll be working her way closer towards that mainstream radar. As a single, “HighSky” delivers an immediate impact, set to transport listeners into the mind of a creative musical artist, in the shape of Velarde, while Six Beatz composes a sound scape that is nothing less than impressive! - Buddy Nelson
Charismatic, San Diego-born [black/Filipina] femcee, Velarde — now repping Dallas, Texas — is taking a unique approach to Hip-Hop. Her colorful personality has allowed her to develop a [new] sound that’s all about connecting with the listeners through high-energy release, uplifting melodies, and compelling vocals reminiscent of artists such as the iconic Missy Elliott, and neo-soul songstress Erykah Badu.
Her new track, “HighSky,” is the perfect rolling and smoking theme song for your toasted summer movements. So roll one, light it — and check out the song below. If you’re feeling, be sure to mash on the share button, and check out Velarde catalogue. - AA HIP HOP STAFF
Velarde has released her brand new single, “Light it up” featuring JayArson and produced by Six Beatz. I am very impressed with Velarde, especially with her creativity and sense of beat. Even though Velarde has JayArson on the track, she still comes through strong.
Velarde’s playful rhyme style surely appeals to both underground and mainstream fans as she spits out the occasional hardcore line making you say huh. These momentary blurts give this track a raw freestyle feel, where there is a fine line between being brilliant and coming across as plumbdumb. Velarde, thankfully is on the brilliant side.
Six Beatz provides the nice, crisp, slow tempo head-nodding beat, while super guest JayArson adds to the pleasure. This song won’t ever get tiring, probably because of Velarde’s slinky flow and Six Beatz uncanny skills behind the board are just simply amazing. Velarde is very unique when it comes to women in the rap world today. Her talents allow her to jump into many genres, as she moves from Rap to RnB, which is most notable on her track, “Get2 Know Me”.
Clearly, Six Beatz’ production techniques, clean drum programs, analog-sounding synths and squiggly samples are what drive this track into new and uncharted territory. “Light it up” is simply brilliant with its herky-jerky rhythm and staccato snare drops over rapid fire, tongue twisting deliveries shared between Velarde and JayArson.
Velarde’s style is everything hip hop needs; a woman who can flip between aggression and romance, sex and nonsense, materialism and imagination. “Light it up” is a dope effort on Velarde’s part, much love goes to her, JayArson, Six Beatz and the rest of her production crew for bringing a real groovy track to the people! - Jamsphere @Rick Jamm
Hailing from San Diego, California and now reppin’ the Big D, Dallas, Velarde is a driven, passionate, and charismatic artist with a unique approach to her blend of Hip Hop. Her diverse musical background and tastes range from classic Rhythm and Blues to Contemporary Rock and Rap. Velarde’s kaleidoscopic personality allowed her to develop a sound that is all about connecting with the listeners through high-energy release, uplifting melodies, and compelling vocals that echo artists such as Missy Elliott and Erykah Badu.
