Record Review: Three Quarter Stone - "It Starts Right Here" (Kissing Bridge Productions 2006)
Everytime I think I'm becoming partial to a specific style of rock and roll something comes along to remind me that I can never restrict myself to any one genre. Recently I have been listening to a lot of power pop and before that a ton of garage but after having just listened to "It Starts Right Here" by Three Quarter Stone I have rediscovered the joy of melodic hard rock.
Hailing from Guelph, Ontario, Canada, Three Quarter Stone have made it a mission to pump out some furious hard rock that features great backing/harmonizing vocals which is something that always sucks me in. While the whole album is great, there is always that one song that seems to draw me in to multiple plays and on "It Starts Right Here" there was now doubt that that song was "Without You." Loaded with killer riffs and those amazing backing vocals, "Without You" made the next playlist of Rock and Roll Report Radio in a heartbeat. Actually that's not true, it barely beat out the funky "Killed Last" for the honours but there are a bunch of tunes on this CD that could have made the list including the very cool and exotic "Bad For Me."
My recommendation is to head over to their site and listen to the album or better yet, contact the band and buy a copy. Tasty hard rock from a bunch of rockin' Canadians. Gotta love it!

A genuine Canadian music icon has been making frequent visits to the Guelph-Kitchener area of late. Greg Godovitz has been a staple of Canadian rock music for the past 30 years. After first having success with the seventies rock group 'Fludd', Greg went on to form Goddo, who in the midst of redefining the meaning of rock n' roll excess, managed to churn out a number of memorable classic Canadian rock tunes that still enjoy radio airplay today.
I spoke with Greg at 'Kissing Bridge Studios' just outside Guelph where he is working with Guelph's own 'Three Quarter Stone':
"I was playing a show with Goddo in Guelph last year and 'Three Quarter Stone' opened for us. They put on a great show, they sounded great and their songs were really good. When I was talking with them after the show, Chris (Drone) asked me if I might be interested in producing when they were ready to go into the studio.
Last month Chris sent me a demo of some songs they were working on, and it really rocked! I played the material for a few friends and they all agreed.
So it all started from there. We've been working through 5 or 6 tracks so far and I'm really excited about how it sounds. The songs really rock, and the guys are all talented musicians, This studio is a great facility and we're getting a really good vibe. I'm telling you it's gonna be a great CD when its finished. I'm very excited about this project."
I asked Chris, who plays guitar and writes, what its been like working with Greg:
"Having Greg produce has really helped improve how the songs sound. He has so much experience, and has worked with so many great artists, that he has a lot to offer. He knows what sounds good, and what works. Things like adding a little harmony part can be subtle, and I wouldn't have thought to use it, but then you hear it and it makes the song sound better. Its hard to describe, but then I guess that's why they call it art."
The guys tell me its been a lot of fun too. Greg's stories from the rock n' roll excess days are quite entertaining, and his book 'Travels With My Amp' doesn't hold back any punches. Its a must read for any musician/rock fan. Three Quarter Stone should have the CD ready by June, and are planning to be busy with local shows over the summer.

Bio
Fighting is Three Quarter Stones third full length studio album, set for release on April 1st, 2014. But dont let that fool you, this band and this album are no joke! Their second Canadian tour is set to begin in May 2014 supporting the radio release of the title track single.
TQS pride themselves on creating music for life. They are self-proclaimed normal guys who you can easily relate to personally at shows and through their music, no matter what life is throwing at you. They have life experience, maturity and operate utilizing all gears. Their love of music began like many of us out of teenage angst, anger and overflowing energy but has grown through experience, musicianship and disillusionment with the business of music. Their songs reflect that, displaying insight, intellect and the full range of emotions. No longer caring of trends, formats or being the next one hit wonder they create songs that have meaning and a musicality that they are proud of and are unmistakenly TQS. Their albums have been compared to riding the rails of the TTC. The moods of their songs range from amped and aggressive, to mellow and pacifying, and hit every stop in between. Its loud and rocking like a fast moving train, but with a little bit of everything mixed in. Providing different moods, from the frantic energy of rush hour to winding down at 2am, with all the quirky personalities and stories there for the looking. The artists of the band all have rich and colourful pasts and their life experiences and wisdom are what fuel their musical passion and creativity.
Three Quarter Stone has its roots in Chris Drone and Dan Wray, on guitar and vocals respectively. The two grew up together in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, having met on a Tilt-A-Whirl ride at the summer midway, then playing as hockey and soccer teammates before playing as bandmates in their late teens. Their friendship and journey has continued has continued with all the excitement of that first carnival ride. TQS initially stalled when Dan left Guelph to travel as a photographer and Chris entered medical school, but the spark was there and TQS was reunited and refortified which led to TQSs first studio offering in 2007. After recording its second album the band became fortified and locked into its current line-up with Ev Locke on drums, Nathan Le Blanc on guitar/vocals, and Scott Clarke on bass. Thus became the TQS we know and love today. That album, titled Bullet with a Name, launched a tour around Canada for TQS in 2011. That tour did more than introduce Canada to TQS, but it solidified the friendship of the bandmates and musical direction for the band.
The release of Fighting and 2014 Canadian tour will feature songwriting and performance by every member of the band, and was produced by Dan Hosh of Catherine North Studios instead of self-produced by the band.
