Orange Music Group and Subcat Studios will host a Battle of the Bands on Thursday at 8 p.m. in Schine Underground. The concert will feature both experienced and new bands as they fight for six hours of studio time at the Subcat Studios on South West Street. The Daily Orange spoke with the eight bands about their music and why they deserve to win the show.

These Walls formed in September, and Battle of the Bands will be the group’s first performance. The group members decided to participate so they can get their name out and share their music. “I know we’re going up against a lot of jam bands and what we can bring to the table is that we’re going to be familiar to the ears,” said Shane Crittenden, a sophomore music major. “We have our own sound, we have a bunch of great songs we wrote and we have a really solid group dynamic.” - The Daily Orange

In late 2014, four students from Syracuse University came together to form the latest hot rock band on the college scene. Comprised of an honest-to-rock four-piece instrumentation, These Walls offers a fusion of classically trained musicianship and in your face, anti-establishment attitude. With their tight-knit group dynamic and expert compositions, These Walls lends their audience unadultured sonorities of classic/indie/alternative/punk rock in the vein of the Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, and the Violent Femmes.
Band members Shane Crittenden (Red Hook, NY), Alex DePersia (Staten Island, NY), Ben Baker (Queensbury, NY), and Billy Hinksmon (Sherman Oaks, CA) met as music students at Syracuse University’s Setnor School of Music. Shane (lead singer, rhythm guitarist, and keyboardist) is currently working on a Bachelor of Music in composition and writes most of the band’s music. As professionally trained musicians, the music of These Walls is an artistic outlet for creativity and inspiration the band members accumulate during their musical training.
In addition to house parties, recent performances include Battle of the Bands at Syracuse University’s Schine Underground, Jammin’ for Justice at SUNY ESF’s Nifkin Lounge, and ZestFest at Syracuse’s own Westcott Theater.
In March 2016, These Walls will release their first album, We Have You Surrounded. Featuring ten original compositions, this album truly captures what this band is all about: compelling lyrics, catchy melodies, and an attractive rock-vibe.
