"The Top 11 Albums of 2010"

#10. The Scandals

Ok, this release completely took me by surprise. Never hearing of the band before seeing them open for Youth Brigade, New Jersey's The Scandals released a gritty borderline skate punk rock album that's both fast and raw. Fans of Rancid or The Have Nots will eat this shit up. - Battle of the Midwestern Housewives

"The Scandals – The Sound Of Your Stereo"

T’s Take: Jersey gets a bad rap usually. Reality TV has invaded finding the worst of the worst and parading the around like the norm. But despite our invasion on South Park, we’re not all that bad. More recently, our hometown of Bayonne was spoofed by the Daily Show. This pissed some people off. But if you had half a brain you’dve realized that their bit was a mock of Sarah Palin’s Alaska and the Jersey Reality TV fad more than it was a diss of any one town. Plus it was hilarious. I’ve been singing its theme for the past few weeks. “This town is gonna fuck yoooouuuuu!” Another thing I’ve been singing for weeks is this new Scandals album, also a product of Bayonne, NJ. See its not all Snooki’s and Sopranos running wild round these parts. There’s more than enough kids pogoing and slam dancing to counteract the fist pumping and beating up of beats.

You know how the Misfits are total assholes on the Evillive album? Threatening people with trips to the hospital and boasting that they pound their guitars like mother fucking jackhammers. This is the embodiment of the Jersey paradox. I say this because clearly they are moronic muscled out goons with bad haircuts and eyeliner. At the same time they are arguably one of the greatest punk bands of all time, unintentionally hilarious and probably justifiably angry. Most New Jersey folk get this way when they leave the tri-state area. You lose all patience with everyone and everything that doesn’t talk, think, and act as fast as you do. I got to thinking about this specifically during listening to the Scandals single Avalanche. It’s a song about leaving town to in search of something and returning home when you realize that something probably never existed. And like the rest of “The Sound of Your Stereo” it’s immediately enjoyable and extremely catchy. The Scandals have a real knack for anthemic street punk. Almost every track is an excuse for dog piles and gang vocals. This is not music to stand by idly and listen to.

In between starting and finishing writing this review I went out for a bike ride to get some much needed exercise. For the first half of my trip I listened to Op Ivy’s “Complete Discography” (second only to Minor Threat in the Complete Discography category). And for the trip back I put on The Scandals. In doing this I realized that the two bands actually had a lot in common. Not stylistically but definitely in youthful spirit, earnestness and the ability to write ridiculously infectious tunes. I can’t think of any reason to not buy this album or to not like this band. And if you can you’re probably a dick. And I’m not talking bout the endearing Jersey type of dick either. I’m talking about the straight up dick type of dick.

P’s Take: Yah, so the mighty F.S.S. is a subsidiary of the Almighty Bolshevix, our umbrella firm and clearing house. I’m not sure if ya’ll knew that, but there it is. And all of us in the Almighty Bolshevix grew up in the same town of Bayonne, New Jersey.

Let’s talk about Bayonne for a minute. It is not very good. It is mostly working-class(oi,oi) and pretty much ugly. And stupid. It doesn’t offer it’s inhabitants much in the way of anything. We are basically New York without the cache attached to it. It’s not a wealthy Jersey ‘burb by any means and it is not bad enough to makes us proud in the way some people are of the hell-holes they came up in. Bayonne ain’t the Mean Streets. It’s more like the Being-a-Dick Streets. But that’s where we come from, so fuck you.

The Scandals are from Bayonne too. And they make surprisingly proficient street rock and roll. They can play the shit out of their instruments, their songs are catchy and anthemic and their production is fuckin’ great. And they are only like 20.

I said before how Bayonne was. There is no scene here. No Brooklyn horseshit. No alphabet city of the 1980’s bidness. Growing up here there was alot of Quick Chek sandwiches and under bridge drinking. For us anyway, prably for the Scandals too. Go out and get their album. They came up on cheap sandwiches, public drinking and boredom. So fuck you. - Frankenstein Sound System

"The Scandals, To the Youth Album Review, 2009"

The Scandals are one of the latest bands out of the amazing musical utopia that is New Jersey. Hailing from Bayonne, New Jersey, they formed in 2004 and put out this EP this year, which is free on their MySpace. It's sort of a promo just to get their name out there, but it acually is very good. A fast, brashy melodic punk, it is fairly entertaining and sounds youthful. The songs have a fun, summer-like quality to them -- just look at the aptly titled "Summer Song." That song also names one of the band's main musical influences, from what I can tell from the music: the Bouncing Souls.

The EP as a whole is short and punchy: seven songs and a bonus track. All the songs sound sort of similar; that may be a good thing, just to show new fans what type of music that they play. I think that this music would be great to play out on the town doing stupid stuff with your freinds, to paraphrase Dante3000 in the Anchor Down review. Actually, Anchor Down is a very similar band. Melodic punk with lyrics that aren't wicked serious.

My personal favorite song on the EP is "Summer Song." It's so fun and catchy. It reminds me of, well, summer in my teens, just hanging out and fucking around. A close second is "To Youth," one of the songs that shows off the musical chops developing for this fairly new band. This riff is really cool, which is why I like it so much.

So, basically, the Scandals are a new band that are just getting their name out there. So, if you like Anchor Down, melodic punk, or are just bored of all your other music, give this a listen. You'll definitely at least feel like you're having fun. - punknews.org
