The DMV area has long been a solid scene from which we have seen artists pop from with somewhat regularity. As the scene has grown, however, so has the level of talent that it produces. Enter Jay IDK, the Maryland native that has spent his 2014 putting his name in the mouth and on the fingertips of just about anyone who has had the chance to catch one of talented releases over the last calendar.
While the release of his debut project, Sex, Drugs &a Homework may have flown under many folks’ radar back in March, he has proven an ability to craft appropriately curated visuals and heads into 2015 with a new single, “Hungry”, released last week.
“I come, from a city where n*ggas show you no pitty
If you wearing pennies
They gon’ aim the semi screaming gimmie
Leave your body
Like inside of Bens Bowl, feeling chilli”
The loose single is a tonal departure from more up-tempo, party-centric tracks like “Two Hoes” and “Shotty Mouth” which have upped is credibility substantially. Here, we have an almost “Control” like affirmation over a hollowed out MarcNfinit production that sets the overall tone for the words he espouses throughout. The track shows both a growth of the individual and an understanding of the bigger picture from which he exists.
This year wasn’t the best for new talent, but Jay IDK may have positioned himself as the next big thing out of the DMV. - Uproxx: The Smoking Section
With his stomach growling and ribs touching, Jay IDK resurfaces with “Hungry”. Menacing boom-bap production from MarcNfinit sets the tone allowing the Maryland emcee to fill our plate with his witty wordplay and passionate delivery. If you don’t know Jay IDK (see what I did there?), better get acquainted because the up-start emcee is showing growth with every release and building his fan base exponentially. Today the DMV native returns to his boom-bap roots via his brand new MarcNfinit produced cut appropriately titled “Hungry”. With just a few weeks left in 2014, Jay IDK does more than deliver with his new record. Satisfy your hip-hop appetite and stream “Hungry” below. - Karen Civil
Combining aspects of lyrical hip-hop with tendencies of more club-based bangers, Jay IDK creates music that sits squarely at the intersection of several sounds which come together to create an aesthetic that is both endearing and abrasive, with enough to keep one's mind busy. On "Hungry" he turns the tables from previous releases, opting for a more ethereal, rap-heavy track than what listeners have heard from the up-tempo DMV rapper. Here we get bars over the gritty boom-bap backing beat that accentuates the emotion and passion in his words.
“I want the world to know that I am more than a rap artist. I produce, direct and do a lot of other things and I have a lot of ambition for growth. I think the key to anything is longevity. I found a way to speak to our generation in a way that they will listen and I have a lot to say.” - Jay IDK - HipHop DX
We’ve all felt the rumble of hunger pains once in a while. For Maryland emcee Jay IDK, it came a little more often than that. If you don’t believe it, just listen to the ambition and determined desperation in his new single, “Hungry.” The MarcNfinit produced beat is the theme music to the description Jay provides about his come up on the streets. It’s a cold world out there and Jay IDK intends on turning it up. - The Source Magazine

Bio
The best artists are the ones who speak the language of the people. Jay IDK (which stands for “Ignorantly Delivering Knowledge”) speaks the people’s language. The stylish Maryland based rapper has found his niche “mixing consciousness with ignorance” while making music that is both danceable and thought provoking.
Jay IDK (born Jason Mills) is a unique talent. At 21, he is an old soul with the consciousness and brazenness of youth. “Music gives me hope,” he says. “It helps me get to a point where I can forget the past and some of the things that haunt me. It gives me my confidence.”
With influences such as Eminem, Kanye West, Jay-Z and De La Soul, Jay IDK has developed a unique sound that has the potential to push mainstream rap/hip hop to the next level. But for Jay, it is about more than just being a rapper.
“I want the world to know that I am more than a rap artist. I produce, direct and do a lot of other things and I have a lot of ambition. I think the key to anything is longevity. I speak to our generation in a way that they will listen and I have a lot to say.”
