To find out the best new bands in Austin for our Sense of Place visit we went to the source at KUTX Radio, program director Matt Reilly. We asked him to pick five, knowing it wasn't an easy task. Matt was careful to represent the many styles of music in Austin's always churning music scene. Today we will hear from Max Frost, Emily Wolfe, Latasha Lee and The BlackTies, Abram Shook, and The Digital Wild. - David Dye

As we mentioned last week, Bun B came to Austin's North Door to play a Red Bull Sound Select show, curated by ScoreMore. Included on the bill were locals Max Frost, Bagheera, and The Digital Wild (and a special appearance by Vince Young).
We stopped by and took some pictures at the $3 show.

KUTX’s Rick McNulty said it best while hosting the Digital Wild’s recent live performance: there’s a lot going on in these songs. The Austin group blurs together a disparate number of genres–rock, hip-hop, electronica, R&B–but somehow it all hangs together. The band seamlessly trades off between three vocalists, the parts intertwining so that it sounds like they’re completing each others’ thoughts. And that high-wire energy has been accomplished in a relatively short amount of time. The Digital Wild just released its debut album, Into The Digital Wild, and the group is still new to the live stage.
Not that you could have guessed it when they stopped by Studio 1A. With a five-piece setup, the Digital Wild brought their moody, tense songs to life, complete with drum samples and vocal pitch-shifting. The complexity of a song like “I Love You” doesn’t obscure its blunt intensity. “What feels good in the dark / And what looks good in the light / May not always align,” Seth Woodward sings, giving way to the conflicted emotions at the heart of the song. - Rick McNulty

Self-defined trip rockers The Digital Wild, have a sound as diverse as the growing melting pot of an audience they attract. Critics have categorized the group as everything from indie rock, and trip-hop, to shoe-gaze, and power-soul. The band hales from Austin, TX and formed in late 2012. Although still fresh out the gate, TDW has already released a debut LP titled, "Into." Which was produced by The Black Angels' frontman Alex Maas and production partner Brett Orrison. Other strides include an endorsement with Red Bull's Sound Select Program, Regular rotation on Austin radio station KUTX, KUTX's song of the day, an upcoming main stage performance at Soundcheck Festival 2014, four SXSW 2014 showcases, a two page spread in Drake Magazine, national rotation for their single, "Riskin" on all NPR affiliated stations, and a full US tour coming in late Spring. The Digital Wild have been described as a powerhouse on stage. A band of live instruments accompanies sequenced beats, male and female harmonizing vocals, and layered synths. Adding to the visualization on stage, dancers create a hybrid style of modern, hip-hop, and tribal dances that accentuates the larger than life and soaring signature sound the group has quickly become known for. Comparisons to such prolific acts as Massive Attack, Gorillaz, The Fugees, and Bjork begs the question, "Is The Digital Wild one of those few acts that truly has a sound all their own?" The general consensus seems to be a confident, "Yes!"
