"Christopher Brothers, La Canada Natives, rising In popularity"

By Daniel Weizmann

May 8, 2015 | 1:50 a.m.

Things are getting weird for the Christopher Brothers, a teenage band that aims to do for La Cañada Flintridge what you-know-who did for Liverpool.
Of course, that’s a giant goal, but 18-year-old drummer Cameron, 16-year-old guitarist Charles and 13-year-old bassist Ethan are blowin’ up so fast, it’s getting hard to keep track. At press time, they had 318,627 Facebook likes and counting, a globe-wide fan base spreading like a grass fire. Random people have been spotted on the street wearing Christopher Brothers T-shirts. Walgreens is playing their EP. And a few big-time agents even dropped their cards into their tip jar while the boys were playing their regular gig on the Santa Monica Promenade.

Just the other day, in fact, outside the Whisky a GoGo, a passerby saw them and said, “You guys look just like the Christopher Brothers.”

Things are getting awesome.

Not bad for some local kids on the green side of very juvenile. Still, it didn’t happen overnight. As young as they are, the boys have been working hard, for six years now already. Charles picked up the guitar while older brother Cameron was still mostly into baseball. Then, one day, Cameron tried to jam on baby brother Ethan’s toy drum kit — an abandoned Christmas present — and he inadvertently destroyed it. Only one thing to do: Ask Mom for a real drum kit.

“Finally, I just said, why don’t you three play together,” says Lydia Christopher, their warm, doting mother, who also happens to be their manager.
“We were like ‘ehhhh, maybe’,” Charles laughs.

“But then we went to the guest room,” Cameron says. “There was no bed in there and it was very cramped.”

“I couldn’t believe it,” Mom remembers. “It took them fifteen minutes to learn ‘Black Magic Woman.’ Five minutes later, they were a band!”

They were on their way. Ever since, the Bros have been paying adult-sized dues, playing everywhere and anywhere. They jammed at the elementary school they all attended, Paradise Canyon. They also performed at a fundraiser through La Cañada High School called the TACH BASH (Teens for the Advancement of Children's Hospital). They even gigged St. Bedes Church. They could also be seen playing from a truck at the La Cañada Memorial Day Parade.

Then came the light-bulb moment: the boys got the inspiration to cross town and fire up their instruments at the Santa Monica Promenade, to Bring the Music to the People, as it were. Well, the Promenade has turned into a four-year-plus run, fueled by battery-powered amps and adoring crowds. But it isn’t just fun and games. Like some other groups you’ve heard of — the Beatles and the Stones, for instance — the Christophers are working their chops to the bone, practicing a repertoire of over 100 classics along with their originals. It’s turned out to be the perfect testing ground — audiences age 3 to 93 are there to scrutinize, including plenty of tourists from all over the world.

And competition on the Promenade is stiff.

“It’s every man for themselves,” Cameron laughs. “Charles jumps out of the car with the suitcase to save a spot, like, up to two hours ahead.” Then after playing for two hours, the boys have to move their gear 120 feet, those are the rules — two hours per spot. “We play 6 to 8, then 8 to 10, and we’re home by 11.”

“If we’re next to the break dancers, that’s tough,” Charles admits.
“The piano guy has been there, like, 20 years,” says Cameron.

And how about Ethan, the youngest, the quiet one. “He’s crazy on stage,” his brothers chime in unison.

“He steals the show,” his mother confirms, nodding knowingly.

If the Promenade was their Cellar Club, they’ve passed the test with flying colors. The Christopher Brothers have since gone on to headline the Whisky, the Roxy, Legoland, and more. They even won a competition to play Six Flags Massachusetts which sent them on their first US tour.

“We drove cross country in a suburban,” Charles says. “With all our equipment.”

“We were totally crammed in there, like road warriors,” Cameron says.

“Well,” Mom clarifies, “technically, I drove. They don’t have their licenses.”

Of course, there are sibling bands and there are sibling bands. There are Allmans and Isleys and Van Halens. And then there’s Jonases and Hansons. There are pop families like the Cowsills and rock families like Oasis. One of the interesting things about the Christophers is that they’re sorta both and neither-nor. Infectious originals like “The Girl Next Door” and “Somebody Just Like You” are caught in the nether-zone between rough garage band glory and ultra-clean Top 40, channeling the Buzzcocks by way of Green Day and Lennon-McCartney via Blink 182.

And speaking of brother bands, their first EP is titled “Smile : )” – but it’s not to be confused with the Beach Boys’ unreleased masterpiece… because this one’s got a smiley.

Like many sets of real brothers, the three boys do seem to form a perfect unity of opposites. Cameron is the eldest and the born leader, the steady beat. Charles, the guitarist, is the cool one, easy and effervescent behind dark shades and an easy smile. And Ethan is the boy wonder — the shy kid who goes wild when the music starts. They finish each other’s sentences. They all sing in harmony. They’ve got a collective crush on Audrey Hepburn. And best of all, they’re completely uncynical about music. They’ve opened for everyone from Spyro Gyra to War, and have even played for parties of “middle-aged people.” After all, they’ve mastered more than 100 retro classics. But what they call retro might not be what you’re thinking.

“Green Day’s American Idiot,” Charles says, “that was, like, one of our first albums, way back when.”

“And Savage Garden,” Cameron adds. “Mom had that CD in the car forever.”

“But for originals, I write most of the lyrics,” Cameron points out.

“I arrange them usually,” Charles says, adding that “it comes out really good.”

“Oh yeah,” Cameron laughs. “His big ‘changing it’ is making it fast or something.”

The boys all laugh.

“I used to play the songs for Mom, first,” Cameron admits. “Because Charles is really a pain in the neck.”

“Yeah,” Charles says. “I’m the slave driver.”

“I’m the slave driver,” Mom says and the boys all laugh again.

In fact, Lydia Christopher seems more like a benevolent car driver than stage-mom slave driver. She’s clearly tickled by the boys’ success, but as a former ballerina, she knows the rigors of show biz. “I did tell them,” she recalls, “if you wanna do this, you’re gonna have to work really hard.”

That’s just what they did. And with the release of their first full-lengther, “Dog Daze,” the sky could be the limit for these dedicated kids. But what does the imagined future look like to them?

“My dream is to have a diamond record,” Charles says, laughing.

“Ten million copies!” Cameron adds.

“Even Taylor Swift doesn’t have one of those,” Charles protests.

“Naw, I think she’s got one,” Cameron says.

“Oh man,” Charles laughs. “Now we have to get one.”

Mom smiles, shakes her head and rolls her eyes. “So wait a minute — we’re competing with Taylor Swift now?”

“I want to play Staples Center,” Cameron adds.

“Or Madison Square Garden,” Charles says.

“How about Dodger Stadium?” Mom asks.

Suddenly, soft-spoken Ethan, the 13-year-old with the chubby cheeks and Cheshire grin who has barely uttered a word up until now, says, “Like… I’d like… like, being a legend. Like being remembered as, like, you did something that’s, like, really great.” He smiles serenely. “That’d be really cool.”

"Introducing The Christopher Brothers"

Meet the Christopher Brothers: Cameron, 18 years old, solid and steady, writes the lyrics and plays drums. Charles, 16 years old, the cool brother (think Daniel Craig’s James Bond), arranges the songs and plays guitar. Ethan, the 13 year old bassist, is the reserved Clark Kent who magically transforms on stage into a legitimate inheritor of the Gloved One’s legacy.

Charles charged into the band world early teaming up with two middle school buddies. He played with considerable enthusiasm but such patchy skills in their view they kicked him out of the band. Big mistake. He informed his mother, Lydia, and she encouraged him to consider working with his brothers, starting with learning “Black Magic Woman.” They mastered it in record time and experienced an “aha moment” when they realized they could build something special and have industrial-strength fun in the process.

Lydia is both mom and manager but with a decidedly non-stage mother style. Observing the speed with which they came together she pointed out that talent without hard work equals unfulfilled dreams. The brothers took her comment to heart and during the past six years, the junior and senior high school of hard knocks, have grown from gigs at the local grammar school, to Santa Monica’s 3rd Street Promenade, to headlining at the Whisky, the Roxy and Legoland, to winning a national competition playing at Massachusetts Six Flags which launched their inaugural U.S. tour. Recently they released their first full-length CD, “Dog Daze”. Their sound is eclectic, part infectious Top 40, part Lennon-McCartney originality.

The Brothers have over 50,000 followers on Twitter and more than 300,000 “likes” on Facebook.

It has been an exciting six years and it’s only just begun. The boys recently released a new video for their first single, “Somebody Just Like You.” - Static by Chad Connolly

This sweet-serene boyish angst track from the alternative / pop punk band Christopher Brothers, tinges on the inspirational. In that it encourages one and all, when you need it “ask for help.” And, when you see someone struggling, feel free to help… Now, if I can only live up to my own words.

Watch The Christopher Brothers Take Flight In "Somebody Just Like You"
Already a social media sensation, The Christopher Brothers appear ready to up the ante. Managed by their mother, the three brothers Cameron, the drummer (18), Charles, the guitarist (16), and Ethan, the bassist (13) exhibit the moxie of the Beatles, and it's palpable when you watch their latest visual "Somebody Just Like You."

The troupe's popularity has soared around the world, but California is where they've cut their trade playing live at the world famous Whisky a Go Go , The Roxy, LEGOLAND California, Six Flags Parks, even local shopping malls, and schools. As a teenage band from La Canada-Flintridge they write, play and produce their own music and it sounds anything but juvenile.

"Somebody Just Like You" precedes the trio's first EP Smile. It's a playful, up-tempo, alt-pop riff featuring the lads wonderful harmonies that make the song really bounce. It's the first taste of their forthcoming album scheduled to drop later this year. Watch the black + white performance clip below.

"Musicians In the Making"

It has all come together quickly for the Christopher Brothers. They learned to play their first song together, Santana’s “Black Magic Woman,” in 15 minutes.

Cameron, Charles and Ethan Christopher

first started playing music together in November of 2008 at the suggestion of their mom, Lydia Christopher. They each took to their own instrument — Charles, the guitar; Cameron, the drums; and Ethan, the bass guitar.

“I couldn’t believe it, they just started grooving together,” said Lydia Christopher, who as a flutist whose own parents are opera singers and music writers has imparted a musical background to her kids.

Three months after learning their first song, The Christopher Brothers had their first gig.

“It actually sounded OK,” Charles said. “It didn’t sound like a horrible train wreck.”

From there, The Christopher Brothers have only worked on getting better, putting plenty of time into developing their craft.

“I don’t know when we started sounding good,” said Cameron, a 15-year old incoming junior to LCHS, drummer and backup singer for the band. “We just keep going forward and getting better and better.”

Since 2008 the trio has played more than 30 gigs, including performances at Magic Mountain, Legoland, the Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival, the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, local festivals or fairs and birthday parties or bat mitzvahs. The Christopher Brothers will perform at the iconic Whiskey A Go Go in West Hollywood on July 9.

“People compare us to the Hanson and the Jonas Brothers,” said Charles, a 13-year old incoming freshman at La Cañada High, who provides lead vocals for the band.

The Christopher Brothers have the makings of a pop sensation, but their roots are in classic rock. The trio can play more than 40 cover songs, which are mostly their favorite classic-rock tunes from bands like the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Guns N’ Roses and much more.

Their song-writing efforts usually produce pop tunes, said Jeremy Castillo, a studio musician and instructor who’s coached the brothers for the past two years.

“I have taught a lot of students and the thing that impressed me the most was that the original songs they write are usually pretty catchy,” Castillo said. “That’s the hardest part. It’s easy to write a bad song. It’s hard to write a good one that has legs.”

Ethan, a 10-year old incoming sixth grader at Paradise Canyon Elementary, said the formula for writing songs is pretty simple.

“We usually just find a chorus and get a good ring to it and go from there,” Ethan said.

Cameron and Charles do most of the song writing and Castillo provides some minor adjustments, like chord placement and song progression. The Christopher Brothers have six original songs, three of which are available on a four-song EP, along with John Lennon’s “Imagine,” on iTunes.

The brothers practice for a few hours every day together, both as a band and separately, working on their instruments and vocals in lessons and by themselves.

“It’s pretty fun being in a band with your brothers,” Cameron said. “We bicker with each other now and then, you know, but we’re still brothers. It’s great because we can always practice with each other whenever and we’re all friends.”

It’s not always brotherly love for the Christopher family, though, Lydia Christopher said.

“They all have egos,” Lydia said. “They’re very competitive about wanting to be the best, particularly amongst each other, and it actually helps them get better.”

As competitive as they are with each other, the three brothers hope to one day make it as professional musicians together.

“We want music to be our job,” Charles said. “That would be a great job, just playing music all day.”

"The Christopher Brothers - "Meet The Christopher Brothers""

“Just Another Day” is the first track on Meet The Christopher Brothers, and it provides listeners with inoffensive rock that is catchy, fun, and possessing of just enough of an edge to keep things interesting. Perhaps most interesting with “Just Another Day” is the rapid back and forth that the vocals take towards the end; rather than riding the melodies to their logical conclusion, the Christopher Brothers continue to add to their overall sound. “What If” has a little bit of a punk side to it, with the guitars reminiscent of Green Day and Blink 182.

With just a hint of emotive rock, “What If” represents the second single for the band. Tying contemporary styles of music with tried and true fresh faces and compelling arrangements is an equation that works perfectly for the Christopher Brothers; while this EP only provides listeners with four tracks, the amount of interest that will be generated in the band just from these cuts is without comparison. “Girl You Know I Care” slows things down and represents the band’s softer side. Despite having a vocal-heavy arrangement, the production of “Girl You Know I Care” is sufficiently strong to allow for a fairly deep instrumental interplay to take place.

With the numerous layers present here, what would normally be a normal type of pop ode to a female turns into something that is much more erudite and fulfilling. The progression as it moves towards the chorus is timeless, and is furthered through multi-vocal harmonies. While Meet The Christopher Brothers ends with a version of John Lennon’s “Imagine”, I feel that the three initial tracks provide fans with more than enough of a peek into the band’s psyche. I want to see exactly how the Christopher Brothers evolve and change over the years; with a great number of years ahead of them, I can only imagine the sheer amount of styles, approaches, and sounds that will be present on each recording. They are that good.

"The Christopher Brothers, "Meet The Christopher Brothers""

Move over Justin Bieber because there are some new kids in town ready to blow up the teen music scene. The Christopher Brothers hail from sunny, Southern California and yes all three members are in fact brothers. You have 15-year-old Cameron on drums, 13-year-old Charles on lead guitar and 10-year-old Ethan on bass. This incredibly young trio is bound to put a smile on your face.
I have to say that I am very impressed with The Christopher Brothers because even though they’re just kids they prove to have much talent and a tremendous amount of potential. These up-and-coming singer/songwriters self-produced the new EP ‘Meet The Christopher Brothers’ that includes three original songs. What is also great about these lads is that there not just into that Kiddie Pop stuff but also have a deep appreciation for classic rock & rock music in general. Some of the bands that they enjoy covering live are: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Santana, Green Day, Guns N’ Roses, Wild Cherry and The Killers. At such young ages, The Christopher Brothers already seem to have eclectic tastes which I think is great.
The EP starts up with a definite kid-friendly number titled “Just Another Day” that is about time spent at school. The innocent vocals & music will attract children & teens from all over the map! Next up is “What If” that shows off their rock sides giving way to a very catchy Soda Pop-kind-of sound. You’ll get a little dose of puppy love on track three “Girl You Know I Care” that sheds some sensitive light on the group. The final installment is a cover of a classic John Lennon song “Imagine” which is one of the best songs ever written in my opinion. John Lennon was a master in the craft of songwriting and “Imagine” can attest to that. I was worried here because this song has such a powerful message and feeling with emotions running wild. So…how did they do? The Christopher Brothers actually pulled it off with a nicely-done version. The Brothers made it work in their own style and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. This version was definitely a new twist on a monumental song but I honestly think John Lennon would have enjoyed it. So hat’s off to you gentlemen!
The Christopher Brothers have a bright future ahead of them and I look forward to following along with their career. These four songs are just the start as I feel more substance-worthy material will be coming our way soon. ‘Meet The Christopher Brothers’ is a good introduction for the world to get to know these fun-spirited musicians. All I have to say is watch out for the screaming girls now! And I’d like to end by sending a personal message to The Christopher Brothers: Always follow your dreams and never quit no matter what! - Skope

""Meet The Christopher Brothers" EP On It's Way"

The youthful voices coming out of the EP Meet The Christopher Brothers have a sense of ownership. Sure, they sound like they could pass for any Midwestern kid's garage band. But, the idea that they own their words, they own their instrumentation is evident in the first track, "Just Another Day." Naysayers will comment on the trivial lyrics, the lack of mature orchestration. But, when it comes down to it, yeah, the Christopher Brothers are young.

Cameron at 15 is the oldest and 'mans' the drums. Next is 13-year-old Charles at lead guitar. Ethan is 10 and handles the bass.

Just like when Hanson burst onto the scene in the late '90s, the trio's youthful voices and screechy notes matched the shrills of teenage-girls world-wide, the Christopher Brothers' vocals have maturing to do. In "Just Another Day" the lyrics are simple - go to school, put up with the routine and do what the teacher says. Underlining this theme is this catchy, punk rock chord a bit heavier than what listeners might find on Disney. As a listener, it is extremely difficult not to feel as though this song is not a novelty, and the brothers are not a novelty act because of their age.

Undeniable Brother Harmony
Like Hanson, the brother harmony is undeniable. In track two "What If" the rock vibe is more pop, and has a fun beat to it. It is very Disney-esque without being too sugary. This song's lyrics are safe and suitable for the tweens and even younger. Their voices seem to have more range on this one. The Christopher's seem to be missing the soul that the Hanson's had.

Track three, "Girl You Know I Care" changes it up even more. This song is definitely the ballad. The words are pretty sugary and young teenage girls will love this one. If it were back in the Brady Bunch days, expect this one to be on an episode of a school dance.

John Lennon Cover
The final track, "Imagine," is a cover of John Lennon's classic. The brothers do a nice job - and their voice certainly hits the higher notes. However, the subtle somber prowess is missing - it is too light. They have a nice layering in the middle of the song, but again, the youth of their voice is just too distracting to really commit to liking this song the most of the four.

Overall CD Review is B
Overall, Meet The Christopher Brothers gets a solid B. How can a listener not enjoy the brother harmony and the smiles coming out of the speakers? Fans of Hanson will enjoy them the most. Give them kudos for writing original music that shows signs of layering. This writer will be anxious to see these brother progress in the next few years.

"Are They the Next Jonas Brothers?"

They're still relatively unknown although they've been on YouTube for at least a year.

According to postings on their website, they've performed at Legoland California, in Los Angeles on Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade, and at various events throughout Southern California.

The Christopher Brothers, Cameron, Charles and Ethan are seen in a screenshot from the video "What If" released to the Web in 2010.

On YouTube, their most watched video had just over 6,000 views. It was posted over a year ago. A grainy video of the trio performing on the street as the sing the Beatles' 'Hard Day's Night' has only 53 views in the two days since it was posted.

Their website describes the trio as the "soon to be newest pop sensation" that "will have you amazed."

The Christopher Brothers is band comprised of Cameron, 15, Charles, 13, and Ethan, 10.

The band can play, according to the site, covers of Santana, The Rolling Stones, Guns & Roses, and Green Day. They are said to be writing and playing their own music.

"People compare us to the Hanson and the Jonas Brothers," Charles told the La Cañada Valley Sun recently.

Last Saturday, the Christopher Brothers were among 11 other acts scheduled to play The Whisky on the Sunset Strip.

In terms of merchandising on their site, the offerings are black t-shirts for both men and women with the group's stylized name.

What the future holds in the short term is another performance.

On July 28, the group is set to take part in an afternoon performance at the Orange County Fair, in Costa Mesa. - International Business Times

"The Christopher Brothers"

Remember what kind of audiences you were playing in front of in middle school (even elementary school in one case)? Yea, yea, everyone had to act in the elementary school play – I mean, a real audience (that wasn’t forced) to watch your drama onstage… an audience at somewhere like the Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade, Six Flags Magic Mountain, the Marina del Rey Summer Symphony Tribute to The Beatles or the Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival. Never did play at any of those venues back then? Meet a trio who has that experience and more, the Southern Cali trio known as The Christopher Brothers, who are already turning heads at the ages of 15, 13 and 10.

They have new release appropriately titled “Meet the Christopher Brothers”; a collection Ethan says is “a good sample of what we have to offer as musicians and that there is a lot more to come. It gives listeners just enough to leave them wanting more… it’s a really nice mixture of rock and pop.” Check it out – they have more material on the way. For now, read on to learn more about these impressive talents in the XXQ’s.

XXQs: The Christopher Brothers
PEV: How would you describe your sound?

Charles: It’s a really nice mixture of rock and pop

PEV: Based out of Southern California, what kind of music where the members of the band into growing up? Do you remember your first concert?

Charles: I found a lot of the older music I like from playing Guitar Hero, actually. We listened to a little bit of everything from The Beatles and Led Zeppelin to musical theatre like Oliver, Grease and Jesus Christ Superstar.

PEV: What was it like trying to break into the music scene when you first started out as a band? What was your first show like together as a band?

Ethan: Our first show was interesting. It was at a party at our house and we were really nervous.

Cameron: We played mostly cover songs when we first started and our one original at the time, which was “Just Another Day”.

PEV: What can fans expect from a live The Christopher Brothers show?

Charles: people can expect to be shocked by our talent and what we’re capable of at our age.

PEV: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you step on stage?

Cameron: We’re never nervous now. We’re just always excited and ready to play and looking forward to making people happy.

PEV: Being brothers, how does this help you learn together and become better musicians? Or is being in a band as siblings harder?

Ethan: the good thing about being in a band with your brothers is that you’re always together so that makes getting together to rehearse really easy.

Cameron: As brothers, though, we tend to have lots of differing opinions about pretty much everything.

Charles: Another good aspect of it is that being brothers makes us all very competitive with each other, in a good way that keeps us all trying to be at our best.

PEV: What’s one thing we’d be surprised to hear about the members of The Christopher Brothers?

Charles: Surprisingly, a lot of people are surprised that we really are brothers!

Cameron: We actually can’t read music yet, even though we know about 70 cover songs.

PEV: Was there a certain point in your life when you knew that music was going to be a goal for you?

Cameron: Prior to 8th grade my main focus was athletics and then when our mom asked to play together she said that we could actually pursue this and that I made it one of my goals.

Charles: I on the other hand always knew that music was something that I wanted to pursue from a very young age.

PEV: What can fans expect from your latest release, Meet The Christopher Brothers? Tell us more about this album.

Ethan: It’s a good sample of what we have to offer as musicians and that there is a lot more to come. It gives listeners just enough to leave them wanting more.

PEV: What is the feeling you get after a song is complete and you can sit back and listen to it being played the way you envisioned?

Fans say the band has an alternative Beatles sound and their music is as undeniably catchy as the great hits they play by The Beatles, Green Day, Weezer, Blink 182 and the All American Rejects. The infectious melodies of California alternative/pop have never sounded so irresistible with their fun and upbeat take on life and romance.

Here’s what others are saying:
“One of the interesting things about the Christophers is that they’re sorta both and neither-nor. Infectious originals like “The Girl Next Door” and “Somebody Just Like You” are caught in the nether-zone between rough garage band glory and ultra-clean Top 40, channeling the Buzzcocks by way of Green Day and Lennon-McCartney via Blink 182.”
