"Firesquid Song Review"

It is always great to hear somebody who has a deep understanding for roots music, because Mike Freund has an excellent grasp on blues and old-school funk. You can hear in the guitar solo that Mike has put in hard time in on the fretboard, and the notes that flow out of those pickups come from a true professional, a gritty veteran of the blues. Hailing from South Carolina, Mike has captured the battered soul of Southern music. "And Now You Know" is a blues stomper and a show stopper with a thick funk guitar riff that is a perfect match for Mike's Les Paul. This blog usually features indie music, but sometimes the heavier, bluesier stuff is what I am yearning for. It does not try to soften itself; it has more of an edge. Sometimes music has to go for the gut, which Mike succeeds in doing for sure. - Jacob Quint

Bio

THE MIKE FREUND BAND is an original pop, funk infused, blues rock band based in Charleston, SC. This act conveys a high level of professionalism, and maturity. The band performs with the energy and vitality of a summer festival celebration.  THE MIKE FREUND BAND is five members, ranging in ages from 21 to 52.  Mike Freund, the bands lead singer and only guitar player is  a 25 year guitar slinger.   Mark Shleiss is a 30 year bass player extraordinaire.  Mike Brown is a drummer of exceptional talent.  Noah Jones, a Jazz major from the College of Charleston is a keyboard player of sensational flair.  Jeff Leftennant, a retired veteran, is a percussion player of monumental tempo.

The band displays a similarity, comparable to the styles of Carlos Santana, Anders Osborne, and Bruce Springsteen.  A typical show boasts on rhythm and percussion, much like an Allman Brothers concert.  Audiences have come to expect this and on some occasions been invited on stage to join the band on hand drums or tambourine and other percussive instruments.   The inspiration behind several of the bands songs are based on recovery, love, family, and perseverance.

THE MIKE FREUND BAND learned to do what they do by performing from King Street in Charleston to South Street in Philly.  They have performed for the North Charleston Arts Festival past three years in a row and have become a staple performance during SummervilleĆ¢€™s 3rd Thursday celebrations.  In June they were named Best Local Act, by Palmetto Brewery.  During the same month, they were nominated by both the Independent Tone Awards and the City Paper for best new album.   In early November the band organized and hosted the first annual Charity Concert for the Charleston Animal Society.  The band has also performed in other festivals such as Daytonapalooza, Daytona FL., The Strawberry Festival, Plant City, FL.,  Savannah Stop Over Festival, GA. and Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival.
