Hodges writes "When I finally pried myself away from another somber star-studded network telethon to benefit the Hurricane Katrina recovery, I ventured out to see what was happening around town. I found that celebrities aren't the only ones who can put together a great fund-raiser. Many South Florida bands are donating the proceeds from their shows and setting up links to donate on their websites. Last month the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale hosted the Jam for Humanity. 'Over 300 poeple showed up,' said concert promoter Mimi Bui, 'and we raised over $5,500.' Bands like Sweetleaf Syndicate, SOSOS, Teri Caitlin, Fourth Dimension, JP Soars and Billy Vasquez, Joel DaSilva of the Hep Cat Boo Daddies, and Super Jam with members of Crazy Fingers rocked the Room. 'The local musicians really pulled together and put on spectacular performances,' Bui said. The American Red Cross expects to put $2 billion into the Hurricane Katrina relief effort, said Ivana Lodovici of the Broward County chapter. December 5th sosos opened up for Blind Melon in Fort Lauderdale. The four surviving Blind Melon members reunited in the summer of 2006, with Travis Warren taking Hoon's spot behind the mic. The group plans on recording a new album for release in 2008, which will also be supported by a tour (the group's first since 1995). Thanks for submitting the material for the evaluation.

I enjoyed listening to the songs. This was one of the strongest submissions in your genre via Sonicbids. Nice work coming out of Florida!

To give you insight to the scoring scale above, the majority
of artists score in the 2.5 to 3.5 range in the various categories.

Whenever an artist sees a 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 or 3.5 as a score in a certain category (or categories) it means that's an area I feel they need to improve and develop.

When someone sees 4, 4.5 or 5 as their score in a category, that tells them, to me, they are in the professional league and have strong potential. It's a validation from a pro, letting you know you are doing a fine job.

Every artist should work hard to earn 4.5 to 5 in every category.

It's a very competitive business and people averaging in the 3's (or less) will probably not get too far without a great deal of improvement and development.

I don't give out 4's and 5's easily, so any of those you see, you have earned. Well done!

One thing to keep in mind, at least for your songs designated as "Singles" (the songs geared towards winning over radio stations and record company executives) - try to keep Intros to under 10 seconds and try to reach the Chorus between the 40 and 43 second mark.

If it's 44 seconds or longer and the Chorus did not kick in yet, you should edit the song's arrangement accordingly.

In rap music, the chorus can come in at the 55 to 58 second mark or so, since the verses are traditionally longer, compared to pop and rock music.

If you are trying to gain the attention of record companies, music publishers, booking agents or top managers, make sure your game plan includes radio promotion, publicity, lots of gigs, Internet marketing and CD sales, at the minimum.

Just having a great CD and live show are no longer enough in today's music business.

Top Five Local Bands To Catch At SunFest 2014

The last weekend in April means the same thing each year for a dedicated South Floridian: live music and long nights in downtown West Palm Beach at SunFest. And while the Robin Thickes and Kid Rocks of the world will no doubt bring the dancing queens and country kings to town, this is a key time to absorb those acts that make our local live music scene special too. Bands that play in your backyard all year will also grace the SunFest stages.
So, we wonder, who will be the next local band to come full circle? We can't quite crown the next victor, but we can decide on our top picks for Florida bands playing SunFest 2014.
SOSOS:
Considering our current swampy local music climate, it's only appropriate that a rootsy bluegrass band made the stage. We're pretty impressed to see SOSOS on the bill. The Fort Lauderdale-based band cut its teeth touring with Donavon Frankenreiter and G. Love and Special Sauce, but now it's ready to bring its talents back to the home front. Guitarist Mitch Herrick knows that even with all the time on the road, "The fact that we are going to be a part of what is considered one of the biggest Florida music events on our home turf makes us very proud." - New Times

in Deerfield, have developed a devoted following
over their 10 years playing in South Florida.
Whether fans come to shows for their melodic, up-beat
acoustic sets or to groove along with their poetic lyrics,

Music vet and New Times scribe Lee Zimmerman shares observations, insights, and updates relating to South Florida's musical environs. This week, SOSOS's Americana indulgence.
I've mentioned it before in this column, but I suspect I'm slowly losing the argument. "South Florida has never been a haven for genuine Americana." We are, after all, more acclimated to tropical climes, hardly synonymous for the wide prairies and dusty realms that inspire rootsy inclinations. But, I'm being proven wrong. Take a look at the music made by Jim Wurster or the 18 Wheelers or any of a number of singer-songwriters eager to sing their heartfelt laments. Indeed, maybe I needn't grouse at all.
The latest outfit to convince me I'm mistaken is SOSOS, a band I was introduced to by promoter Chrystal Hartigan. She was touting the fact that the group has been selected to participate in this year's Rombello Cruise, which departs from Miami this Friday, November 1. They'll be appearing alongside Michael Franti and Spearhead, G. Love & Special Sauce, State Radio, Donavon Frankenreiter, and Rebelution. Not bad, especially considering the fact that over 1,500 acts submitted their music to ReverbNation, the cruise's sponsor, and only one -- that being SOSOS -- made the cut. - NEW TIMES
