Shane Davis first made a name for himself playing guitar in the band Black Market Salesmen and through his extensive work with singer/songwriter Izzy Miller. A native of Huntsville, Alabama, readers of The Static Dive first heard from Davis upon his solo debut single “Let Go,” released in October of 2020. In May of this year Shane returned, this time with the Shane Davis Group backing him up on the song “Back Burner,” a rootsy Southern rocker. The band’s sound is steeped in the shared history of Country, Southern Rock and Grateful Dead/Rollings Stones inspired jam-band Garage Rock.
“Ocean Song” is the latest single from the Shane Davis Group, released worldwide to all major streaming services on September 10, 2021. The song is the second release resulting from the band’s recent recording sessions in Atlanta, Georgia with producer Joey Huffman. The track opens on a mellow Country Blues guitar riff which remains the central melodic hook throughout most of the song.
Shane enters the mix with a soulful and vulnerable tone reminiscent of the late, great Jerry Garcia. Davis offers some bluesy everyman-Zen wisdom with lines like, “Slow down, there’s no need to hurry. You’re doing just fine.” Meanwhile the guitar/bass/drums/organ ensemble delivers an excellent chillout jam, featuring a nice long and slow Blues guitar solo later in the song. It’s a beautifully recorded track with an authentic, organic feel.

We first heard from Shane Davis in October of last year upon the release of his eponymous solo album. That record introduced us to an Alabama native with a penchant for Classic Rock-inspired Rock & Roll. For the better part of a decade he and his band Black Market Salesman rocked the Huntsville area with their brand of blues-fueled hippie jams. Their 2018 EP “Brainstorm” was produced by Grammy-nominated producer Joey Huffman (Matchbox 20. Cee-Lo Green, Soul Asylum) and was featured in Relix magazine.
During the pandemic Shane began working on his solo material. Soon The Shane Davis Group was born. On the roster are; Ben Kendall (guitar), and Shaun Bloodsworth (drums) and Shane’s longtime collaborator Billboard-charting artist Izzy Miller on bass. Earlier this year the crew traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to start tracking new material. Producer Joey Huffman has once again taken the reins in the studio. On May 28, 2021 the band released the first product of these sessions.
“Back Burner” is the brand new single from The Shane Davis Group. The track is a rootsy Southern Rock torch song featuring the full SDG line-up with the addition of Huffman on keys. His Hammond adds a nice Dylan-meets-Skynyrd vibe to the mellow rocker. Shane has maintained the soulful Stonesy-feel of his earlier work. However, the production on “Back Burner” gives the track a more polished and accessible feel. Lyrically he laments being sidelined by his love. The song’s rocking verse leads to an immediately memorable Pop chorus.
With excellent performances from the entire band, The Shane Davis Group’s Back Burner has a timeless and radio-ready sound. Check it out below. Even before that, St. Stephens will be open and rocking. The venue’s first-ever show is a record-release party Saturday for local band Shane Davis Group’s debut EP “Concerning Comfort.” Tracks from that four-song EP, including standouts “Love You Found” and “Pecos,” take inspiration from classic-rock, jam-bands and folk rogues. Silver Silos, a rootsy Huntsville combo with songs peppered with lap-steel and sax, are the opening act Saturday at St. Stephen. Doors open at 7 p.m. and showtime’s 8.
By Thursday, the $10 tickets had already sold-out. Davis -- who’s 33, longhaired, soft-spoken and plays a Gibson Les Paul guitar – says “it’s amazing” to have a new originals-focused Huntsville venue.
“I really appreciate places like St. Stephens,” Davis says, “that want to showcase all the original talent that Huntsville and the surrounding areas have.”
In addition to local spots like the Sports Page Lounge & Deli, Shane Davis Group also plays shows in Birmingham and Georgia. They recorded a 2023 live album, titled “Full Tilt,” in Opelika.
Although his St. Stephens bow is sold-out, Davis says, “They’re planning on having the windows open, so you might be able to hang out on the lawn near the windows and listen.” Out front, the venue has a few café tables and chairs set up. - AL.com
