I recently had the opportunity to interview Savannah Rae. We discussed what fostered her passion and appreciation of music, the moment she knew she wanted to pursue music herself, writing and recording her new song, “Soft Place To Land”, life as a traveling musician, filming her upcoming video, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Hi there! Thank you so much for having me and chatting with me.

Can you tell me how you got started in music for those who may be unfamiliar? How did you initially become interested in music?

I was very fortunate that at a young age, my parents introduced me to all different types of music and they really helped foster my passion and appreciation for it. Any time of music you can name, they brought to my attention. We started going to concerts when I was 10 and I specifically remember going to an Evanescence concert in San Antonio. I saw Amy Lee up on stage and turned to my mom and said “THAT is what I want to do. I want to be like her”. Shortly after that, my parents enrolled me into guitar and vocal lessons and the rest was history! I fell in love and realized that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

You just released your new song, “Soft Place To Land”. Can you tell me about the writing and recording process for the song?

Soft Place to Land is what Bob Ross would call a “happy accident”. I was writing and recording with Britton Cameron (Dillon Carmichael, Jon Pardi) and we were focusing on a completely different song. The session took most of the day but we had some time left over towards the end. Britton started messing around on the guitar and I started throwing out random thoughts and words and about 45 minutes later, Soft Place to Land was born! I had a good feeling about it and shared the worktape with my team and they loved it. I came back a couple weeks later to the studio and recorded it in a day!

You’ve said the song encapsulates your “feelings of not knowing where I completely belong, not having any real roots anywhere, and the crazy life that music has blessed me with”. Can you tell us more about this?

I absolutely love my job and all the uncertainties that come with it. I am always on the go and sometimes don’t even know where I am going to sleep that night if I’m on the road. Everything is super spontaneous and free-flowing when you’re a traveling musician. It definitely keeps things interesting! However, with these uncertainties, comes uncertainties about where you will end up in the long run. I wanted to write a song about not ever knowing what my next moves are, but I hope that when I do find a place to settle down and create some roots, it will be a nice and soft place to land.

You collaborated with Britton Cameron. What was it like working with him?

Britton is awesome! I have written a TON with him over the past couple of months. We work very well together and it’s always such a blast writing and recording with him. He is an extremely talented guy and really helps me with all my different song concepts and different ideas that pop into my head!

You will also be releasing a new video for the song that you created with J.B. Lawrence. What’s it like working with him and what can you tell me about the video?

We filmed the Soft Place to Land video in Round Top, Texas. I wanted to give my home state a shoutout, while still incorporating some of that “traveling” aspect. Round Top was a perfect location that beautifully lent itself well to the concept! I had such a great time filming with J.B. He took my visions and really helped bring it to life! He has such a great eye as well which makes the video something very special. I am very excited for everybody to see it!

What other plans do you have for 2021? What can fans expect?

Since last year’s shutdown, I have been working on writing and recording and really perfecting my craft. I have many songs that I have been dying to release, so you can definitely look forward to a lot of new material to listen to before the end of the year. With things opening back up now, I hope to get back out on the road and play some shows! Live shows are my absolute favorite thing and I am just itching to get back out there. Counting down the days!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

I would just like to give a huge shout out to the people that support my music and I! I would not be where I am today without the love and support. I hope you are loving “Soft Place to Land'' and cannot wait for you to hear the other things we have been working on for the past year!
