Allmusic says "Spring's rich, slightly smoky voice (which suggests the clarity of Sandy Denny mixed with the sweet earthiness of early Marianne Faithfull) is a surprisingly malleable instrument"... a "wonderful voice" ... and "she's as gifted a writer as she is a performer". 2006
"Held in high esteem by fellow musicians, she (Sally Spring) is joined by Gene Parsons, Tift Merritt, Marshall Crenshaw, Caitlin Cary, and Fred Smith but at no time does the veteran songwriter take a back seat. ...it is Sally who takes centre stage with her distinctive vocals and commanding presence"
--Maverick, UK - October 2006
" While it's the gently piercing clarity of Sally Spring's voice that lights up Here Come The Memories and Floyd Johnson, the emotional heat she generates on Ain't No Ash Will Burn is white-hot. ...the songs reached deep inside, were beautifully layered and had something to say."
--Americana UK - (nine stars!) February 2007
"Dass Sally Spring nun wahrlich kein 'junges Ding' mehr ist, hort man den Liedern und insbesondere ihrer reifen, runden, warmen und fraulichen Stimme deutlich an. Das erinnert dann sehr angenehm an die Kunste von Damen wie Emmylou Harris, Natalie Merchant oder Tracy Chapman, um mal ein paar bekanntere Hausnummern zu nennen.
translation:
One listens to Sally Spring's songs, and particularly, to her mature, full, warm and clear feminine voice. It reminds me of the music of ladies such as Emmylou Harris, Natalie Merchant or Tracy Chapman, to mention a few more well-known musicians."
--Das Rock, Germany 2007 - Various
"...striking results can be heard on Mockingbird,... Sally's inviting voice ... (her) first-rate compositions..."
--No Depression, November/December 2006
"Soulful and gritty, Mockingbird is the latest from North Carolina veteran, Sally Spring. Her voice is perfect for these folk tales"
--Uncut, U.K. - February 2007
"Blessed with a full voice reminiscent of Sandy Denny"
--Harp, February 2007
"...her voice has that darkness and emotional complexity that reminds me more of June Tabor than any American singer. Her phrasing is fantastic..." --Net Rhythms, UK 2007
"...her soulful, sweet and appealing voice... In short 'Mockingbird' is one of the best CD's I've heard recently from an American songwriter"
--Massimo Ferro, Radio Voce, Italy - 2007
"very intimate and beautiful"
--Melodic, Sweden - December 2006 - Various
Here are just a few quotes:
"...Sally Spring, whose beautiful vocals were supported by an A-list band including the great Graham Maby on bass."
Peter's Postscripts - Peter Blackstock, Co-editor of No Depression Magazine
"A captivating performer" Variety - NYC
"The real show-stopper was Sally Spring." Sing Out
"Veteran folk-rocker Sally Spring's upcoming Mockingbird surrounds her with the likes of Gene Parsons and Marshall Crenshaw as well as local luminaries Tift Merritt and Caitlin Cary. But Sally's stunning voice and captivating songwriting make her the heartbeat that keeps the whole enterprise pumping." Independent The Triangle's Weekly - Durham, NC
"Spring's Eternal...Sally Spring one of Winston-Salem's most distinctive and distinguished musicians...who is making amazingly fresh music." Relish - Winston-Salem, NC
"Sally Spring couldn't have been more appropriately named. Sally and her music are as refreshing as the season of new birth and new growth." Chattanooga Times
"The quality is familiar - as easily recognizable as it is rare. It is that singular ability to touch people's souls with song, to bring the emotion rising from deep inside the listener... "
"...her open tunings - unique haunting quality gutsy, bluesy, soul-filled sound of her sweetly defiant voice complements her playing beautifully." Winston-Salem Journal
“Her vocal phrasing is unique and pleasing with a voice so rich and full that there is always more to discover as you listen over and over.” Gene Parsons (Byrds)
- See Below:
Her (Sally's) glorious alto voice transfixes you whether performing an original, a traditional song or one by Gram Parsons...The show stopper on this recording is Spring's composition, "Here Come the Memories", a song worthy of Leonard Cohen, in the vein of his famous "Blue Raincoat". Accompanied simply by guitar, bass and harmonium, it's riveting... In a genre of floundering voices, it's an unmitigated joy to come upon a voice as solid and pleasing as Spring's. If you're looking to discover a great new voice, listen to Sally Spring." - Sing Out! Summer 2007
"Sally Spring has an incredible voice and writes engrossing songs. I don't know where she's been hiding, because she's not one of the "kids," but everyone who heard her was pretty stunned by her voice and her material."
- Rich Warren - WFMT Chicago

Raised in North Carolina, Sally Spring literally started singing even before she could even speak. At 11 years old, she bought her first guitar, figured out open tunings on her own and accompanied herself on a local television appearance a mere six weeks after she started playing. She performed in college coffee houses soon after, traveling the country on a shoestring recording with and/or sharing the stage with many musicians including Gene Parsons of The Byrds, Doc Watson, Mama Cass, Rev. Gary Davis, Taj Mahal, Odetta, and Dave Van Ronk among many others.
Now many years later, Sally continues
to perform at festivals, universities, house concerts and clubs wowing fans
throughout the U.S. and Europe making "amazingly fresh music," as
Relish magazine observes.
selected to perform in a special concert celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the prestigious No Depression Magazine.
Sally has recorded with several notable musicians including Gene Parsons (The Byrds), Marshall Crenshaw, Graham Maby (Natalie Merchant, Joe Jackson), Fred Smith (Television), Faye Hunter (Lets Active), Tift Merritt, and Caitlin Cary (formerly in Whiskeytown).
