""Interview with Rosco P. featured Talent""

MARCH 28, 2016
INTERVIEW: ROSCO P
FEATURED TALENT

You may not have heard the name Rosco P yet, but you will soon. This young Hip Hop artist from Michigan is driven and well-spoken. His recent EPK album, "My Apologies" has been on repeat for several of the Velites crew (myself included). We wanted to share Rosco's talent and story with the Velites Network. We set up an online interview here, and included some of our favorite songs for you to check out.

Del - What initially drove you to become an artist? What keeps you pursuing that passion?

Rosco - At first when I was starting off I wasn't even interested in the thought of rapping. My mind was set on being a producer and creating the inner workings of beats. The beats that I'd produce would be really intricate and unique that I'd have to write a verse to demo to potential buyers so they would be able to catch a feel for the way I felt the delivery should of been. After I'd spit the verse to them I'd always get compliments about my raps. They'd say " Rosco, you can rap ...so why don't you ever record any of these and make them into songs?" I'd always express my gratitude but the thought of being in front of people was intimidating to me at the time. Plus being a local rapper in my city wasn't exactly seen as something to be taken seriously. I'd over hear conversation where people who were local rappers were down played dramatically and talked about as lazy, untalented people looking to not work for a living. It bothered my soul that people could think this way of people. I wasn't lazy, I wasn't unmotivated, I believed I was good, and I believed that I had a message worth listening to. My life wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't perfect either. I wanted more from life than just the 9-5 job I had. It was cool but I felt like prisoner in my mind everyday I had to be there. So the next day I started writing a verse a day. I told myself that I was good enough to do this. I made up in my mind that I was going to be an example. Most importantly I wanted it more than anything. So I gave myself this ultimatum...Either make it, or live the rest of life regretting never attempting.

The things that keeps me pursuing this passion is something that watched on a Bob Marley documentary. Bob Said that "We as musicians have power to say something." Music moves people. When you're having a good day you usually play something that makes you happy. When you're having a bad day you usually play a song that'll help you get through it. Music to me was lacking the message's that people like myself needed. I felt like I need messages about persevering, or about rising to the occasion, or about how I CAN achieve what goal my mind was set on. We needed enlightening, and if I felt that was then I was sure someone else in the world felt the same way. Since there was a lack of there of I felt I was the person to do it, but also to do it selflessly. My goal is only to be influential. My goal is to help someone else get through there storm. That I why I continue to chase this music dream. It's not about me. It never was. If we have the power to say something then I'm going to say something worth listening to because you never know who's ears are listening.

Del - Who are your biggest influencers (both within hip-hop and outside of it)

Rosco - My biggest influencer's inside of hip-hop would be a culmination of few artists. I've gotta name drake because to me he opened up a lane for emerging artists to travel through. Without him hip hop would still be about rims, guns, jewelry, dance moves, or what side of town you represented. Drake made having normal people issues and success a topic to rap about where at one point it wasn't. Then also Travis Scott for opening up the new school genre to a new wave of energy at shows. J. Cole as well. because he represents a similar struggle. Coming from having to make something out of nothing. People need that. The Youth need that.

Outside of hip hop it would be Thomas Jones. He's my uncle. He's a professional Saxophone player. He'd travel from state to state doing different gigs and I was always fascinated by the idea. It was always right in front of my face at Sunday dinners as he'd mention what city he'd be off to next to play in. I knew that that was something I was going to do one day. I had no idea it would transpire into rap. I'd spend countless summers with him at Sexton high school for band camp because he was the band director. I'd literally have access to any instrument at my disposal. That's where I feel my journey to becoming a producer subconsciously took place. Had it not been for that I probably never would've stumbled upon my gift. For that and him I'm extremely blessed and grateful for.

Del - What is your primary goal for yourself and your music in 2016?

Rosco - My goal for myself and my music this to become a household name. I've been working for about 5-7 years now and its roll over season. The ground work has all been laid over the years and I'm ready to deliver this message on a large scale. We are dealing with some particularly trying times in America right now. Some people have lost hope, Some don't know how to feel. Some have no direction what so ever. The size of the success has no value with me. The amount of influence is what I'm going for. I'm trying to attribute to a rise in lives saved, kids enrolled in school, and in graduations on all levels. The time is NOW!!! My goal for this year is to be heard and remembered as influential.

Del - Is there anything else that you want our audience to know about you?

Rosco - It not about me...It never was... If you're chasing a goal and your goal is progression then I'll chase that thing with you. Its about preventing the next person from struggling. Leave a mark on that has longevity. Selfless - "Del" Velites Company.

"Rosco P. Releases New Project "My Apologies""

Rosco P is a bright young Hip-Hop artist who is deeply determined to reach the next level. Our TapSongz Team had the chance to learn more about his career, music and goals in an exclusive interview! He began rapping in the summer of 2007 and never looked back. He came from a family of musicians and everyone played an instrument. "I'd wake up everyday and the goal would be to make a solid beat from start to finish," Rosco P told our TapSongz Team. He's a huge fan of Drake, Travis Scott and Jay-Z, but all for different reasons. "I love Drake because he opened so many doors for people like myself. I mentioned Travis Scott for the level of energy he brings to new school rap shows. Finally, I chose Jay-Z for his entrepreneurial sense."

While Rosco P has plenty of inspirations, he looks to create his own unique sound. The rising rapper recently released a fresh project on SoundCloud titled "My Apologies". Our TapSongz Team especially loved the track "Blue Benjamins", where Rosco P's rapping is smooth and truly shows his character. "This song was really unique. It was made by 2Drumatik and what we wanted to do was introduce this new iTrap style I was taking on," Rosco P said. The track is no doubt unique and is definitely worth a listen!

The "My Apologies" project overall turned out excellent and features a little variety, perfectly displaying Rosco P's versatility. But he has even bigger plans ahead. "The My Apologies project is a short project meant to hold over the attention of my audience for my larger project I'm currently putting together," Rosco P said. The young rapper has always been a fan of the Hip-Hop industry claiming "it definitely has the ears of youth and it brings people together." Our TapSongz Team couldn't agree more.

As far as the rest of 2016, Rosco P is hoping to gain more press as well as land a major sponsorship. If he could work with any artist on a collaboration, Rosco P says it would be OG Maco. "OG Maco is all for the youth and creating and building waves. That fits right alongside what I stand for," he said. After an impressive project in "My Apologies", our TapSongz Team is excited to hear what Rosco P has up his sleeve next. There is no doubt the potential is there. At this point, it is all about building a stronger fan base and spreading the word.

We encourage all of our viewers to check out Rosco P's SoundCloud and give his music a listen! Definitely be sure to toss him a follow on Twitter to stay current with his next projects! We are certain that Rosco P has a place in the Hip-Hop industry and we look forward to hearing his next big project. Keep your ears open because this is not the last time you'll hear about the young rapper. Here at TapSongz, we thank you for reading this feature article as we continue finding tomorrow's greatest music today! - Eric Rustad

"Blood, Sweat, and Rap"

Sept. 15
It’s tricky to go against the grain, particularly if you have the expectations of many resting on your shoulders. But sometimes, it’s necessary; for rapper Marcus Jones, known better as Rosco P, there was no other way. “I lived in a household where everyone was like, ‘You’ve got to go to college and get a good degree and go to school and get a good job.' Once I got into college, I realized that I was clearly going for everyone except myself. I didn’t want to be here, this was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So, two weeks into Art History 101,” he said with a laugh, “I left, and I’ve been making music ever since. It’s the best decision I ever made.” But things weren’t easy right after his break from LCC — he soon lost his job. Instead of wallowing in the difficult moment, Jones decided to funnel all his energy into creating music. Fastforward five years, and the 25-year-old rapper has been making waves locally.

“I recorded a bunch of songs, but the one that really sparked everything was this track I made called 'Blue Benjamins.' It’s a song about being an entrepreneur and finding financial freedom over 808-laden beats,” Jones said. “It was kind of cool. I decided that I was going to take substance and put it over what was trap music at the time, and it worked.” It worked so well that soon his song was playing over the air on Power 96.5 FM and even over the loudspeakers at Common Ground Music Festival. “Right over the main stage, so everybody heard it. The next year, we were invited, and then the next year, we said, if we could just progress all year and get a better set time, and that was this year. We were offered the 11 p.m. slot,” Jones said. “I actually closed after Big Sean, and I went from opening the festival to seeing people running over the hill to see me.

I was like, ‘Wow, that’s amazing. We’re doing something here; it’s really working.” Now, he will head back to Adado Riverfront Park to open for Lansing’s all-Hip-Hop festival, PRIME. Performing alongside names like Machine Gun Kelly, Waka Flocka Flame, Migos and more. He said that his secret is making relatable, “substance”- filled music. “I want for it to be cool to be normal. A lot of trap music is like doing drugs and selling this or driving that, whatever have you. I like to make things that are more relatable to the everyday human being. Not a lot of us are doing that, so why can’t we just shed light on more relatable topics,” he said. “I try to give real-life substance over those kind of beats. You’re still turning up and everything, and you’re like, ‘Yo, I just figured out how to get out of that life circumstance.’”

Jones has branded his new take on traditional trap sounds as iTrap and has a new music schedule to come out soon. He will also star t touring after his PRIME set.

“At the end of September, we are hitting the road and seeing everything. We’re still planning, we’re very hands on, we’re doing everything ourselves,” Jones said. Before all that, however, Jones is excited to try his hand at stagediving. “I always climb up on the guard rail,” Jones said. “But this time around, people want me in it, so I’m jumping into it.”

“Rosco P at PRIME Music Festival”

Friday, Sept. 15 4-4:45 p.m.

Tickets start at $35 Adado Riverfront Park, 201 E. Shiawassee St., Lansing primemusicfest.com.
