Isaac: It’s an amazing time to be a DIY artist/performer/band/musician. What do you feel you contribute musically to the Indie Music Culture?

Prayer/Life: This is Andrea for Prayer/Life, that’s an interesting question, Isaac. I’ve never been asked this in any magazine or radio interviews before, but you are right, it is an amazing time to be an indie musician, the sky is the limit for us now. What do we contribute musically? Well, every band and every musician is unique. But we are uniquely unique, if you will accept that, in that we are playing contemporary Christian music that sounds like no other CCM group at all because we are bringing together the new age sound in the keys with the singer-songwriter vocal style.

We just read a fan comment posted yesterday on Jango.com about our single, “I Cover My Face” that says “The instrumentation is so unobtrusive and open. It leaves so much room for the listener to hear the lyrics.” That is not typical in CCM which tends to for more toward a rock or pop sound, trying to reach the youngest listeners. We are not trying to reach the youngest listeners, and thus our fans span all age groups, we have enthusiastic teens but we have enthusiastic older folks too who have just discovered our sound. The Indie Christian music culture is best found at IndieHeaven.com where we set at #1 for 2 months.

Isaac: If you had an opportunity to sign with a major label, would you sign now knowing you may have to give up some of what you have built up over the years about you in the process?

Prayer/Life: That’s a problem we haven’t faced yet! We would definitely sign if we felt the label understood our mission and would help us get this inspirational music out much further. What would make this an easier choice is that we aren’t in this to make money but actually to share the songs God has given us with more people around the world, (John is an engineer and I am a clinical psychologist) so the fact that labels do not benefit the musician financially would not present the same problem as it would for other people trying to make a living from their music.

Isaac: I remembered Simon Cowell from American Idol talking about the “it” Factor that makes a musician/band stand out. What do you think is your “it” factor that makes you stand out from others in the music business?

Prayer/Life: The “it” factor was hinted in in my last answer, the fact that God literally gave us these songs. We prayed, waited with self-restraint until we felt God was giving a song, and only then wrote each song on “In Our Midst”, our first album. And the fact that the songs touch so many people so deeply and we keep hearing the similar comments from fans: “absolutely beautiful” “inspiring” “anointed” and “soothing to the soul” confirms that others get what we get from these gifts of songs.

Isaac: What is the one element that will makes you stand out from the rest of the musicians/artists in the music industry?

Prayer/Life: Just what I was explaining, that we are in this for ministry and to share songs God has given us. This isn’t easy. I want to have more songs. I want to sit down and write songs. But if I am not feeling dialed in or tuned into God, that is just going to be me, Andrea, making up stuff, that may please me but it won’t be part of a larger purpose. I know that if I wait for a song God gives me, then it was meant for some person for some purpose and that is the whole reason for doing this.

My life was plenty full with a huge psychology practice and raising a family. I didn’t need to add this music making stuff. But I felt called to. So I said Yes. In fact, a song slated for our next album (#2) is called “Say Yes” and another song has a line in the refrain that says “But I’m listening this time….” This refers to key times in my life when I felt God’s direction but didn’t listen and the regret about the losses and suffering that resulted.




Another thing that makes us stand out from the indie music industry is that our debut album, “In Our Midst,” is engineered so beautifully by multi Grammy and Platinum recording engineer Billy Whittington (Amy Grant, Newsboys, MercyMe, Michael W. Smith, Phil Stacey, etc.).

grabbed us. We don't tag a lot of releases as having great lead vocals, so this is an excellent strength for you to have.

Arrangement / Instrumentation
Having a good arrangement, with the right instrumentation, helps give listeners a better sense of what's happening melodically and
harmonically. Your arrangements were just right. Nice job.

In the studio, a good mix separates the men from the boys. It's relatively easy to get good raw tracks, but mixing them right is an
art unto itself. Clearly a lot of time and work went into the mix here. It's paying off.
Production Quality

Prayer/life is a collaboration of singer/writer/flutist Andrea Davis-Griffin and writer John Stallworth who also handles piano, keys and synths. The album “In our midst” is an honest and pure album with various musicstyles from pop, rock to jazz and blues. It’s not a rockin’ album, but more on the softer side of pop. The voice of Andrea is very delicate and reminds me of the voice of Sara Groves. Also the Music sometimes tends to move into her direction.


Beautiful songs to find some rest from the hustle and bustle of our daily busy lives. - Melodic.net

A church sanctuary may be an unusual place for a CD release party and concert, but it was just the right place for Prayer/Life, a Pasadena-based Christian folk-rock group, to play the melodic, thoughtful songs off their new album, In Our Midst. Rows of candles in the aisles dimly lit the church and set the mood for Prayer/Life's intimate and reflective songs, creations of Andrea Davis-Griffin and John Stallworth. With the first delicate notes from Stallworth's keyboards, the audience grew quieter and more reverent than on a Sunday morning.
We were all in for a treat. Andrea, with her lovely and expressive voice, led us into a musical meditation on God's presence in daily life -- the title track from the CD In Our Midst. Her heartfelt personal lyrics and wise delivery held the audience rapt, as did Stallworth’s intricate, jazzy playing. Several more beautiful songs followed, all revolving around themes of faith. Lyrics to the songs and scriptural references were displayed on a large screen to the left of the stage, which emphasized the importance the group places on the meaning and message of their work. Davis-Griffin often bases her lyrics on scriptural passages and hopes to spark reflection and deepen her listeners' understanding of scripture. One of the best songs of the night, for example, was the moving and powerful I Cover my Face, inspired by Moses’ climactic encounters in Exodus 19 and 32-33. The song speaks of a very personal encounter with the Holy. Davis's intriguing melody builds into an amazingly appealing chorus, one that is at once catchy and thought-provoking. I hummed it for days after the concert and each time found myself pondering its meaning.
Prayer/Life’s songs are intelligent, thoughtful and musically interesting. Their spark could arise from the fact that the truly eclectic song-writing duo, Davis and Stallworth, comes different generations, different cultures, different cities, different day-job professions, and different faith traditions. Whatever they are doing to bridge their gaps and collaborate -- it sure is working. Their first CD, produced by a team that includes the prolific Blair Masters and Grammy-winning engineer Bill Whittington, does justice to their original music. It's got plenty of fine arrangements, expressive vocals, and some of the best piano playing anywhere. And you get an added bonus: the lyrics will lead you to think and wonder.

Musically, this album covers many genres, including slow rock, new age, pop, rock, and even some elements of modern blues (such as my favorite track8, “Trouble”), but it never comes off as confused or without focus. This group has a unique musical identity which shines through all ten tracks. Based on the merits of its musical excellence alone (the writing, performance, and production), this album would be a wonderful addition to any CD collection, but what makes it truly extraordinary is the insightful and honest lyrics, to which the music acts as an apt and fitting conveyance. These two elements (of skillfully written and performed music and meaningful and vulnerable lyrics) meld together to form some truly inspirational and memorable songs. My favorites are Trouble (Notes from Jail), Forsaken, and In Our Midst. All ten tracks are worth looking into, but these three are must haves for your MP3 library.

With a name like Prayer/Life, you might have some pre-conceived notions about what to expect in the music. Yes, there is religious connotations, and prayer worthy lyrics abounding, but on the flip-side there is life within these songs, meant to invoke inspiration, and maybe even a little faith into your everyday life. It may not be for everyone, but the music is well produced and executed with enough passion to carry the message of the song, so do not discount the beauty, even if the message isn’t necessarily universal.

I Cover My Face

Angelic, is the word to describe the voice of Andrea Davis-Griffin. With her spirit invoked lyrics with her strong but delicate voice and the presence their sound created by the talented John Stallworth on piano, keyboards, and synthesizer, Scott Davis on guitar, and the haunting bellows of the cello played by John Catchings, they combine to create a powerful listening experience. Inspired from the words of Exodus 19, 32, and 33, the song, “I Cover My Face” is charged with emotion, beauty, and grace that is truly sung to the glory of the Lord. While the song is beautiful without understanding its meaning, it has an underlined story that affects many people. “I Covered My Eyes” is more about the troubling doubt of the Lord’s presence that many face in everyday life, but at the same time, believing he exists with reservation. Often, people pray and seek to find the signs of his existence and doubt Him when no signs appear, while others see his glory solely based on faith. With this faith, there is a given light that is only visible to his true followers. The message is, there is no need to look if you believe in Him with all of your heart.
