Already approved by Jack White, who listened to the band in Nashville, this rising gypsy-folk outfit from Holland has a lot going for them. Mainville’s debut EP, Full Steam Ahead, rushed her forward, putting the young singer-songwriter’s music into the minds of many within West Michigan. From there David Bowie bandleader Gerry Leonard worked with the band on its full-length, Maybe the Saddest Thing, released in December. Give it a spin and find out why so many have fallen in love with this unique sound. - Eric Mitts
Ralston Bowles hosted an after-party in The Stache at the end of the evening. He jammed onstage with Olivia Mainville & The Aquatic Troupe, whose new album “Maybe the Saddest Thing” earned them an award for best contemporary folk album.
“I appreciate the local community here,” Mainville said. “It’s amazing here. I’ve never seen it in another place.” - Jordan Schulte
HOLLAND, Mich. - A Holland teen is releasing her first full album onThursday, and it features Gerry Leonard, a guitarist for David Bowie.
Olivia Mainville, 19, worked on 90 percent of the album with a friend named Andy Fettig. The pair created the sounds of an orchestra on the album in four days before recording, although they took their time polishing the gypsy swing folk album called "Maybe the Saddest Thing."
"The name came from a guy named Marcus Wicker," said Mainville. "He wrote a book of poetry called Maybe the Saddest Thing, and it’s like a very modern but touching book of poetry."
Her band, Olivia Mainville and the Aquatic Troupe, comprised of West Michigan musicians, is making quite the splash on the local music scene. Her song, “I Need Time,” features Gerry Leonard, who’s best known for being David Bowie’s guitarist and band director. - Brody Carter from FOX News
Mainville describes her music as gypsy swing folk. Her playful voice has hints of a young Alanis Morrissette and sometimes Regina Spektor.
Mainville has already spent a lot of time touring the state playing music. She’s had more time on her hands than most teenagers. When she was in 9th grade, she decided to leave high school and become homeschooled so she could focus on her music. - Emily Fox

Though mostly acoustic, The Accidentals sound drifts from folk to jazz to rock. And the rest of the Girls With Guitars lineup is just as varied. Olivia Mainville, for example, describes her music as gypsy swing.
“Every one of us plays something…like a totally different genre," says Mainville. - Rebecca Thiele

Bio
"Ethereal and open hearted, singer-songwriter and guitarist Olivia Mainville and her band The Aquatic Troupe, based in Grand Rapids, are full of surprises. Their uptempo gypsy swing and baroque pop songs accented with punchy horns showcase a vaudeville flair, while gentler compositions soar into spacier landscapes, paring back the band’s tendency towards rich sonic layers to reveal Mainville’s inspired vocals. Musicians like Beirut, Danny Elfman, and David Bowie have been a major influence, and Bowie’s guitar player and bandleader Gerry Leonard even played on their 2015 debut album, Maybe The Saddest Thing. Olivia Mainville and the Aquatic Troupe have made a truly distinctive and unforgettable live show and sound for themselves."
