Bio
Old State Travelers is a band based out of The Triangle area of North Carolina. The band combines a soulful blend of Americana, roots, country, blues, bluegrass and gospel.
Shannon McLaughlin and Kevin Michael Thompson had initially formed the group with the intent of being an old-time string band. However, when they began playing together as a four-piece it was quickly apparent that the music wanted to go in another direction. Each member of Old State Travelers bring a unique background and musical outlook to the table.
Vocalist and guitarist, Kevin Michael Thompson brings a blues and soul sound to the band. Kevin is a prolific songwriter. His music has been featured on television shows American Pickers, What Not to Wear and many more. He writes many of the band's original songs.
Shannon McLaughlin grew up listening to traditional country music and singing in the church choir. His clean vocal style is reminiscent of country artists from the forties and fifties. He also plays a Nashville or (high strung tuning) guitar that adds depth and fullness to the band’s sound.
Bassist and vocalist Jeff Severt grew up in a home that lived and breathed bluegrass music. In fact, family reunions often centered around jam sessions. When Jeff was a teenager he discovered rock music and has been playing both ever since.
Violinist and vocalist Jocelyn Van Vliet is thouroughly steeped in classical music. She has sang for the North Carolina Symphony and is equally adept on piano, choral music, violin and her newest obsession-electric violin/viola.
