We recently connected with Night Sky Alumni N/A and have shared our conversation below.
Night Sky Alumni, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Honestly, the most meaningful project to date for us as a band would be this latest 3 song EP we are currently recording. We just completed tracking, and are in the stages of them being mixed and mastered. This would be the second release for us as Night Sky Alumni, and I can truly say that it has been a wonderful experience so far! We are working with the very talented Bryan Reilly out of Ferndale, Mi, and he has been such a pleasure to work with. He is very professional, has all the gear one could ever ask for, and really takes time and care for the artist. We went into the studio with the intentions of doing a single of our song “Let’s Take A Shot”, and we ended up cranking out two more while we were setup, and we are so glad we did, for they have turned out way better than expected. It’s nice to know that all the hard work we have put into this project is paying off. We will be releasing these songs as singles throughout the next couple months, and cannot wait for everyone to hear them!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Night Sky Alumni is a 5 piece Alt/Rock band from Detroit, Mi which captures a sound that will take you back to the days of The Gin Blossoms, The Verve Pipe, and Counting Crows. Formed in the later part of 2020 when bassist Steve Lupinski approached singer/songwriter Jason Longuski about playing some gigs together as a duo, while at that time Jason had been already writing, recording, and performing as a solo artist for a few years. After a few gigs, and jam sessions later, the duo decided that they wanted to incorporate more players to the roster and really boost the live sound and energy. That is when drummer Al Ledford, and keyboardist/backup vocalist James Berg who had been playing in a couple of other previous projects together came into the picture. While the sound got even bigger, there was just one more piece missing, and that was lead guitar. The final element was found in lead guitarist Adam Enriquez, who rounded the vibe and sound out so perfectly. By 2021, Night Sky Alumni got off to a roaring start by playing the annual Arts, Beats, & Eats festival in downtown Royal Oak, and really turned some heads with our signature 90’s alt vibe originals, the overall energy and performance, and choice covers such as The Neighbourhood’s “Sweater Weather”. Throughout the year, we had performed a slew of other gigs at such venues like Parts & Labor in Melvindale, and 101 The Wrif’s “Rock For Tots” Christmas show at Freddy’s Bar & Grill in Clinton Township. By January 2022, We had released the band’s first 3 song EP “Better Late Than Never”, featuring the songs Wouldn’t Trade A Thing, Waste Your Soul, and Proud Of You, which can be found on all major streaming platforms such as Spotify, Itunes, Apple Music, ect. 2022 was another successful year of fantastic shows, writing new songs, and attracting more followers through various events and shows. 2023 is shaping out to be an even better year by keeping that momentum going. That is truly the best way to get a good taste of what we’re all about, through our live shows. Don’t get me wrong, a social media presence is extremely imperative these days to let followers and listeners know what’s going on, where you’ll be next, and being consistent with it to keep their attention; however, it is just as important to give the audience the same, if not better experience from what they’ve heard on the recordings in your live performances as well. From the feedback we’ve received thus far, we have done a great job of that.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For us, the most rewarding part about this is and always has been, is the joy we receive from taking an idea such as a riff, melody, or lyric, and turning it into something that not only we are proud of, appreciate and enjoy, but to share it with others. To share a story through music, and to have others relate and experience these songs in their own personal ways. It’s really a tremendous feeling when someone expresses how deeply a piece or song that you’ve created hit them and or meant to them. It’s the absolute best!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In this day and age where people are so disconnected from one another being that the main source of communication is purely through a phone or computer, it is so refreshing to see as an artist people coming together at a venue to enjoy a night of laughs, love, and live music. The only way to keep that going is to invest in that scene. As a society businesses, venues, and bars need a reason to host live music, and the only way to do that is to have their establishments filled with patrons supporting those artists. So my advice would be for anyone and everyone who loves music and wants to keep the scene going, support those artists by attending a show, buying their music, shirt, or whatever merchandise you may fancy that they are selling, give them a like or follow on the socials, and share it with your friends. Whenever you have a free night out, take a moment to look who’s playing that night, and I guarantee that you’ll be surprised at the kind of quality of show you get! Best of all, you won’t have to break the bank doing it either.
