The Nooze takes the opportunity to sit down with one of Atlanta's most popular contemporary folk rock artists... Nate Currin


The Nooze: Most musicians start drawing influences from the time of early childhood. Would you say this was true with you?

Nate: Yeah, I guess so though neither of my parents were overly musically inclined. My dad wanted me and my siblings to learn a musical instrument so I started taking piano lessons at a pretty early age. I started writing my own material in middle school, and began playing around on the guitar in high school. So, I guess you could say that music has always had an important role in my life.

The Nooze: The material on The Darkest Sea, your first full length cd, seems to be very acoustic guitar oriented. Do you write mostly on guitar now?

Nate: Mostly, but I still do a good bit of composition on the piano. I feel like the guitar helps me be more creative with my expression but the piano allows me to express the emotion behind each composition a little better.

The Nooze: Having listened to The Darkest Sea, I have to say that it is certainly aptley titled. The material seems to come from personal experiences that might not have been all that pleasant. It is definitely on the dark side.

Nate: For me, the album is about personal experience and observations on relationships and internal struggles we all face at one time or another. These experiences can be good or bad. Each song on the album is more or less a picture of my past, my faith, and my experiences.

My music has always tended to be introspective and a bit melancholy, but I think that's the picture of the human heart and life - we all tend to focus on our feelings to some degree. It's like a catch 22 for me. I often get asked, why don't you write more uplifting music? and my response is: well, when things are great I'm not usually sitting in my dark corner writing - I'm out enjoying life. It takes those trying moments to usually send me into a writing mood.

The Nooze: Who would you say your musical influences are?

Nate: Well first and foremost would certainly be Counting Crows. Adam Duritz has been a hero of mine for many, many years - and the emotionally compelling lyrics that he writes inspire me in a way that few others do.

I would say I also have drawn influence from a wide variety of artists, both old and new: Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and even Elton John. I am really into Bright Eyes at the moment. I feel that Connor Oberst is one of the great lyricists of our time.

The Nooze: Is music all you do now?

Nate: Well, I graduated college with a marketing degree 4 years ago and worked at that for a while but for the last couple of years I've been fortunate enough to have enough support from friends and family to devote the bulk of my time to music. I'm currently in negotiations with a couple of record labels, and we're anticipating being picked up by a major label soon.

However, I'm not completely sold on the idea that an artist has to sign with a major label to make it in today's music industry. Many artist are really taking over the industry with a grassroots effort. There are so many outlets now...

The Nooze: Well the album sounds great! Where was it recorded?

Nate: The bulk of the album was recorded at Sound Ecape Studios in Toccoa. The engineering was done by a good friend of mine named Chris Chambers, but production was a co-effort between myself and Chris. Then we had it mastered by Glen Schick in Atlanta who has dealt with a number of platinum artists.

The Nooze: Who all performed on the album?

Nate: Mainly the guys that support me in my band: David Anderson on lead guitars, Adam Clark on keys, Andrew Ferguson on percussion and then I was fortunate to be supported by Bob Christmas on violin, who is a premier performer here in Georgia. They all did an outstanding job.

Also, Rachel Stump, a very good friend of mine was able to come in lay down the backing vocals for a number of the songs, which was nice since she performs with me every now and then.
