Artist Interview:
What inspired the emotional and passionate lyricism within your single "Excuses?" Why did you want to create such a reflective piece?

When I played the instrumental, the first line “We were just good friends” came out automatically without much thought. From there, I knew the direction of the song would flow with the concept of making excuses for one’s actions. The line in itself has been heard many times throughout history to create doubt when you know the truth all along. Many of us have been lied to or cheated on, and we hear the popular excuses “they ain’t mean nothing babe” or “never meant to hurt your feelings.” Passing the blame is easier than admitting you messed up and apologizing for some and this song reflects those instances.

Speaking on the mellow and warm production within "Excuses," did you create the production yourself? How did you create the sonics to offer a heightened sense of emotion and passion?

The instrumental was produced by Thaibeats and the track was engineered by Walt Arkain and Angelo Quaglia. I wanted the lyrics to match the production and the delivery to be subtle, yet confident. Although I’ve never been in this predicament myself, I wanted to dig deeper than narrating a storyline and tell the story as if I were involved.

Within your single, "Excuses," you go back and forth between your melodic vocals and your rhythmic bars. Is this a staple for your sound? Do you usually create this organic blend of Hip-Hop and R&B?

Blending bars and vocals have become a staple but started unintentionally. I loved to sing, but honestly couldn’t at first so I shifted to rapping my lyrics instead. After taking vocal lessons, I decided to incorporate singing into the Hip-Hop image I was developing and continued to keep both genres for my sound. R&B vocals on the hooks of Hip-Hop tracks are common, so blending the two wasn’t far-fetched. What isn’t common is that I’m doing both myself instead of having a featured artist.

It's clear that you often place conceptual themes into each of your songs. Why is story-telling so important to you, and how do you develop themes that listeners can relate with?

I always took to music that had a storyline, message, or conceptual theme. I prefer to write music that listeners can relate to in one way or another. Some people want to feel like they aren’t alone, others want to enjoy themselves and I cater to both. One thing I’ve seen people neglect to do in music is to realize that listeners don’t listen to one type of music. However, with that said, one thing that has been a staple in the music industry is songs that people can connect to tend to stick around.

Do you have any goals with your music going into the New Year?

Of course. “Always up to something” is the motto I follow and I will be releasing my EP titled “Mannequin” early in 2021. ‘Excuses’ is the lead single from the EP. I will also be returning to the studio to work on the next project which the majority was written during the quarantine. - Buzz-Music

What do you do when the person you love won’t own up to their own bad behavior? “Excuses” addresses this as Myles delves deep into the darker parts of a relationship. The timeless track talks about when our partner won’t admit to what they did wrong and rather they make excuses. The gorgeous songwriting on the piece perfectly sums up this feeling and pulls on the heartstrings in a truly heartfelt and intimate R&B/Pop infused ballad.

Q. It’s wonderful to have you on Jukebox Mind. Could you please tell us about your journey as a musician and how did you embark on this path?

Myles: Growing up, I loved music and began writing songs. Those songs will never see the light of day, but I never lost the passion for music. However, I did not release music until 2013 when I shared some snippets of remixes with close friends and family. After receiving their feedback, I began working on a project titled “Mylestones,” which was released in 2015.

Q.What is your biggest motivation while you make music?

Myles: Honestly, my biggest motivation is myself; and I say this humbly. I aspire to create music that I enjoy and can share with others confidently. I try to keep this in mind as my focus because other people will give their opinions that can steer you in a direction to make something pleasing to them and you may not prefer it. Some criticism does help, but my foundation is to make sure I love it first and it will attract others who love it too.

Q. Your new single “Excuses” is wonderful. Could you please share some insights in regards to the making of the song?

Myles: “Excuses” was the first song I wrote for the upcoming EP. I envisioned myself in a relationship where my partner is making excuses instead of admitting they messed up and apologizing or trying to fix it. Then as I sat with the hook, I wanted to flip it and be the person who was avoiding the truth and tell the story from that point of view so it felt more authentic and relatable.

Q.Who are your biggest influences in music?

Myles: My biggest influences consist of, but are not limited to, Brandy, Jade Novah, Ne-Yo, Cameron J, JP Cooper, Lyfe Jennings, and so many more. This list would truly be too long to mention everyone because I enjoy so much and am influenced by so many.

Q. What next? What are you working on currently?

Myles: After the release of “Excuses,” the EP “Mannequin” will follow. A virtual performance will also be aired on New Year’s Eve for First Night Northampton on the organization’s official website. I will return to the studio to work on the next project, which was written during the quarantine.

Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, Myles Jéh connected with music at an early age and began to release music in 2013. Starting off performing at local open mic events, Jéh became known for his low tone, and laid-back, but thoughtful lyrics. Using old tactics of selling physical copies of his music, Myles released Mylestones on October 1, 2015, as both a standard and deluxe edition. Months later, the project was released and is still available on digital retailers.

How long did it take you to complete your current EP?

From beats, to writing, recording, post-production, and visuals, the entire process was roughly two years to complete the entire album and everything surrounding it. I knew that I did not want to rush the process and that my goal was to release quality. There were certain photographers I wanted to work with on the project, one videographer, and one sound engineer.


Do you have a favorite song on TWENTY-8? If so, which song is it and why?

I love different songs for different reasons, but there are three that stand out to me. Natural Disaster, Ride, and U-Turn are filled with vocals and lyrics that continue to impress me. Natural Disaster is a song that I originally wrote for another artist and ended up recording and releasing it myself. Ride is a song that I love to repeat while I'm going for a ride, go figure. It has just enough bass, beat, and lyrical content for me to get lost in time. U-Turn ends my album and is about having the confidence in finding what or who you want in life, even if that means turning back to someone you left, but also about having the confidence that you can find someone just as good as the person you left, if not better.


Who would you like to work with one day and why?

Each time I get this question in an interview my mind goes blank, but I would love to work with Cameron J, Tori Kelly, Brandy, Childish Gambino, Kevin Garrett and J. Cooper. There are plenty of other artists I would love to work with as well, but I've taken to these artists more recently. - Antoine Washington (Tae Designz)

The storytelling aspects of this track have me addicted from start to finish. “Middle of the night with your lies out, only a matter of time til I find out” is another notable line in this dope track, taking the theme of lies and deceit to another level. Myles Jeh begins with a deep insightful introduction explaining the age of technology and setting the tone for the delivery of his new album titled “Mylestones” to the HIP HOP audience. Present in the underground scene since 2013 back with new music for his supporters, the substance in this album is universal and has the ability to cross many barriers. The deep insightful approach keeps the listener on edge as we take a journey with the artist.
“Fun & Games” is one record that stood out from the jump, something about it’s care free vibe allows the listener to look at their current situations and appreciate where they are. This concept allows a situation we all have witnessed before on different levels to be painted out in correlation to his own experiences. When “Round & Round” played I instantly connected with it, Myles Jeh reached into his core and gave his fans an emotional track about the power of love when loyalty is involved, understanding that you may get mad but your destinies are intertwined. “Drug Affairs” goes inside a vision and paints a picture of substance addiction.

A dynamic mixture of the Golden Age and the 2000’s sonic sound, “Hood Story/Blue” paints a picture of the struggles of being in the inner city and being surrounded by chaos. Myles Jeh narrates 3 different stories of inner city youth going through every day madness. The turn up begins with “Been There Done That” the smooth ambient sound almost allows you to taste the ocean waves, it reminds the listener of distant memories they want to hold dearly. The 2nd half of the album heats up even more as the production and lyrics sync together.
“Takes a Little” can for sure be featured in a motion picture, it’s smooth approach keeps the listener engaged and relaxed. “Time waits for no man so speed up and slow dance I tried to give her romance but she gave me no chance” raps Springfield artist showing his rhyme scheme and wordplay, the song speaks volumes and is sonically pleasing to the psyche.
