Portland-based rapper Myke Bogan is making noise for his new visual “Here We Go,” but his movement extends further than that. Get to know more about the MC who draws comparisons to Kendrick and Big L.
Name: Myke Bogan
Age: 26
Hometown: Lancaster, CA currently residing in Portland, OR. This is where my whole movement is based.
I grew up listening to: The Fugees, Biggie Smalls, Tupac, Phil Collins, Blink-182 and lately Young Statues from Philadelphia. I am also really into what Chance the Rapper has put out, that dude can spit!
Most people don’t know I: Usually piss the bed if I’ve consumed a mass amount of whiskey even if it is in my bed.
My style’s been compared to: Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, Big L.
My standout records and/or moments to date have been: One time after I rocked a show with Snoop Dogg a girl called me “the black Brad Pitt”.
My goal in Hip-Hop is: To be heard by as many people as possible and to give people music that just makes a positive impact. I also want to achieve all the personal goals I have to break from the norm in hip-hop.
I’m gonna be the next: Myke Bogan. - XXL
For anyone who missed Myke Bogan‘s PDX Pop Now performance, allow me to set the scene for you real quick. It’s the last night of the 2014 festival, and the audience is waiting for the next show with anticipation. It’s a Sunday night, but there are only two acts to go and everyone in attendance is trying to soak up the last moments of a fantastic weekend. I’m hesitant to admit it, but I had never listened to Myke Bogan and had no idea what to expect from his performance, other than a warning/promise from DJ Fatboy that, “it’s going to get weird.” DJ Fatboy and Myke Bogan took the stage, and I mean they took the stage. For 45 minutes, the two talented artists gave 100% and their fans did the same. If I couldn’t hear the lyrics from the stage, it would have been no issue since the two dudes behind me knew every word to just about every song performed. I was blown away by the show and just when I thought it couldn’t get better, Myke Bogan stands there on stage, right in front of the Portland Police and lights a joint. If they weren’t already going crazy before, the audience lost their minds at this point. Folks were screaming, chanting, lighting up in the audience.
Today, the man himself dropped a brand new, 6 track EP, titled “Silk Jockstrap”, which is available on iTunes. At PDX Pop, Myke won over an audience of very diverse musical tastes. “Silk Jockstrap” is capable of doing the same. From the beats, (which are great), to Myke’s mellow, yet upbeat style, the album is easy to listen to. His verses are honest, with absolutely zero f*cks given.
So often, I see artists who have a great album, but only a halfway decent video to accompany the release. Or, they have a great video and only a halfway decent live show. Myke Bogan is killing it across the board right now. Below, you can check out the video for “Pool Balls”, one of the tracks off of the album. Follow Myke Bogan on Twitter to keep up to date on upcoming shows. And of course, head over to iTunes and purchase “Silk Jockstrap”, available now! - Weouthere.net
Although it’s a bit confusing as to how the Portland emcee came up with the name of his new single, we can tell that a few girls he’s run into inspired the message. The SYLR alumnus is back with a trippy visual directed by himself and the Soundlaps Crew. And it’s dedicated to all of those girls who say they love you but aren’t the ride or die type of chicks you thought they are. It’s tough to make the call on whether you’re going to stay with a girl or not, but you have to at some point. Myke speaks from experience.
Blossom gets the assist on the hook.
Off his upcoming project, Silk Jockstrap, which has my vote for project name of the year so far. - The Source
The Video:
Ascending handpainted slabs of concrete under the blazing desert sun is Portland/LA rapper Myke Bogan in his video for “Aye Aye,” which premiered on Okayplayer. Filmed in Slab City, California, the tripped-out, psychedelic video has the emcee delivering sharp rhymes while wandering through the abandoned and unregulated former World War II site. The track is from his Casino Carpet mixtape which released earlier this year.
“The song is about constantly trying to be the best person you can at all times while still living life to the fullest,” Myke Bogan explained. “I wrote this song after a huge argument I had with a close friend about religion, I told her that I think life is about being the best person you can and also making the best out of every opportunity and experience whether that be drugs or church or anything that makes you happy…it’s kinda like when Bob Marley said, ‘my riches is life.'”
Myke Bogan, who floats between Portland and LA, has an EP and studio album planned for 2016. Dubbed “Freshest in the Northwest” and fan favorite by Juice Radio in Seattle, Bogan has also performed 95 shows in 2015 alongside the likes of Snoop Dogg, Dizzy Wright, King Chip, Ty Dolla $ign, Yelawolf, MGK, Murs, Too Short, Bone Thugs N Harmony, and E-40.
Drawing more than 834,000 video views and landing on the same stage as hip-hop legends Snoop Dogg, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and more, he’s been named a 2015 “Best New Band” by Portland publication Willamette Week as well as #4 on Juice Radio’s “Freshest in the Northwest.” Myke Bogan and his management and production team Soundlapse have taken the Northwest by storm, and after teaming up with new Portland label EYRST the only outcome is wider success. “Joining EYRST is a celebration of group progress,” says Bogan. “When you get to be yourself, and have true support behind you, it means everyone around you grows. EYRST aids independent artists, helping them navigate the challenges of the music industry without sacrificing their uniqueness. We can finally just focus on the art.” - Audible Treats
