1. Welcome 2 My World
The track generates mixed responses in all. Apart from the new angle to Soulja Boy’s new found genre the track doesn’t really stand out as such. A sense of blasé is experienced as you go through to the end of the track.
2. My Life
With the rap the track gains a semblance
Tryign actually that? T This cialis 200 mg pills in them funky http://calduler.com/blog/generic-lexapro-walmart toddler it? of appreciating factor. However, the regular notes blare on and fail to make a mark.
3. Where I’m From
This track, however, brings some hope into the album, with beats and rap style though familiar make an effort to be novel. The track is pretty enjoyable and makes for a good listen.
4. G Ride
This track more or less could have been avoided as it resembles the previous tracks and isn’t unique apart from the lyrics.
5. Party Ova Here (feat. Dunn Da God)
This track probably makes for a good party song but many occasions you may feel the rap is not party material. Could have done better with the turning down the rap.
6. Flya Than
The song, again, doesn’t seem much more than a mere rip off of the old tracks in the genre. Apart from the few nuances here and there the track doesn’t come across as highly impressive. Malachi should have given some though to being unique.
7. She Said
The track has an air of freshness to it, maybe because of the theme of the track or the rhythm or the novelty of the notes.
8. Have It All
The track again comes across something highly refreshing and stands out. There’s something new and moving about this track and the lyrics are awesome.
9. Living My Life
After listening to the previous track, you wish the author keeps the momentum going. However, this track doesn’t impress.
10. Lovely
The album has surely got one too many tracks of the same kind. The artist should try to deviate from the regular style occasionally to make better tracks.
11. Signed and Sealed
The different theme of this track surely comes as a welcome change in the album but the consistent rapping style that doesn’t seem to change. The track, again could have toned down the excess rap portions.
12. So Much More
The monotony with the ‘so much more’ rap gets to you with this track ‘cause this is when the artist realizes that he brings in a change with the rapping style but he doesn’t. Even the chorus doesn’t strike a chord at all.
Album Verdict: Good start and Malachi can do much better!
Album Rating: ★★★☆☆ - Music Perks
“Malachi Grant is an hip hop artist with depth … His high energy music, takes the listener through feelings in life, all listeners can relate too. His content range is an open canvas delivered with a stylishly-fresh sound.”
Opening with title track ‘Welcome 2 My World’ sets the scene, with a certain laid back wooziness to the sound. The snare cracks and the bass throbs, which Malachi Grant’s raps move effortlessly alongside the music, with a tonal variety that makes his voice easy to listen to.
‘My Life’ starts of with a dark tone, before shifting into a fresh, modern sound. The compressed bass creates an intensity, with Mike Milan’s guest vocals adds support to Grant’s flow as he lays down his rhymes.
‘Where I’m From’ has a hectic backing track, with a variety of siren sounds that create the feeling of running from the cops, and ‘G Ride’ continues with the intensity, honking and blaring while Malachi Grant raps confidently with an occasionally grizzled edge.
‘Party Ova Here’ is more stripped back in terms of its production, focussing more on the details. Stuttered, chopped vocals, a 3-note synth part sits unceasingly in the background. Some house influences creep in along the way, and the flow is tight throughout.
‘Flya Than’ feels a little more unremarkable in the context of the rest of the album, but ‘She Said’ moves towards a more R&B direction with a strong balance between thumping beats and smooth synths.
‘Have It All’ is even more of a surprise, opening with a gentle piano part, although after a short while the beats kick in and Grant’s sneering raps are daubed all over the track.
Closing with ‘So Much More’, Welcome 2 My World wraps up as a confident, modern hip-hop record.
There’s a lot to be found on here, and it’s worth giving it some time to enjoy the production. Check it out. - Cross Radar
Check out this great new single from NY’s own Malachi Grant called “My Life”.
Why did you select this song as your current single?
“My Life” is a song I believe many people can relate to, the energy and message delivered is nostalgic and appreciative. Everyone goes through different experiences in life that make them who they are which makes the world go round.
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?
This song serves as a starting point for the Album “Welcome 2 My World” and bridges as a turning point from the previously darker album “Just That ill.” You will be able to understand who I am better through the variety of songs on the album.
What was the writing process for the song?
For this album, I pulled from life experiences. In the studio, I selected different production that matched a feeling and it was easy to write from there.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
The lyrics mean a lot. “This is not a movie, this is my life”. Recognizing that you are blessed to come out of the situations that you came out of to be the person you are today. It can be surreal when you look at your humble beginnings, the adversity you had to face to make it to this point and knowing there is still more to do. But ultimately, being proud of your journey and your struggles because they are your own. Lyrics like, “living on the edge, man you should let your fear go,” only further echoes the courage to free yourself. You’d be surprise what people can obtain when fear is not a factor of their decisions.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
To see me perform ‘My Life’ is to see me relive the experiences that make up the story of the song. Recapturing those moments to deliver energy and fans will feel themselves reliving their own similar moments.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
I believe they can summarize who I am at my core. I am a determined individual from humble beginnings who is thankful for his blessings but focused on achieving more. A person who has overcome adversity at different levels. And dares to dream and willing to work to bring those dreams to fruition.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
A video is in the works! Currently, I’m exploring a number of different concepts that may uniquely showcase the music and message visually. The idea is to show my fans a piece of me.
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
Everyday life. My music is created based on my experiences new and old. Meant to capture moments and emotions that are universal to all yet specific to my experiences. - iMoveiLive
Malachi Grant is a hot rapper coming out of New York among some of the best artists in hip hop. His music has a smooth feel to it and the lyrics are on point and crisp. On his album, “Welcome 2 My World”, there are some definite bangers with big 808 kicks and heavy bass that will blow out your stereo deck. Malachi also has a good singing voice for hooks, which makes his style more versatile. I really like how the feel of the music switches back and forth from hard hip hop to a really chill laid back flow.

I loved the analog warmth of the music, it brings out an old school kind of sound where saturators were prevalent from tape distortion. You can tell that Malachi puts in a lot of work, not only in the booth, but on an engineering aspect as well. The instrumentals are clear and his vocals really cut through his mixes which is uncommon of independent hip hop artists today, who just want to push any song out no matter what the quality. I can really tell when an artist puts a lot of time and effort into something.
The panning, effects, reverbs, and delays make a really exciting experience for the listener and I would recommend listening to it with headphones to take in the minute details that highly distinguish the character of the songs. The EQ and compression is done very professional as well. My top 3 songs on this album: “My Life”, “Where I’m From”, and “Signed and Sealed”. Much respect to Malachi and his new album! - Skope Magazine

“Determine why you took a lost, be honest with yourself. Make the adjustments and bounce back with a vengeance. Recovering from pitfalls is just a part of the journey. Accept yours and respect the process (journey)…”
BAUS: How did you get your start in the entertainment world? What made you decide it was for you?
Since I could remember, I’ve loved music. It was a big part of my upbringing. My grandfather, mother, sister and I all play instruments. I just got caught up in the melodies and began writing. Then I got my introduction to hip-hop and it continued on. I never really had to decide it was for me. I just had to accept it.
Can you tell us a little about what you do outside your professional life. Do you have any other business or hobbies you are involved in? If so, tell us about it!
Outside of music I have hobbies like drawing, basketball and reading.
How do you feel is the best way to balance your life in music, and life in your profession?
Music is life. The best way to balance myself is to respect my private time. We all can over work ourselves to the point that we aren’t productive. So getting sometime for yourself is ideal for that balance. Music takes up most my time, the 9-5 some more. We all need different things to look forward to. Music and my private time are my two things.
What do you feel you offer to the world that other entertainers don’t offer? What is your specialty?
I offer inspiration through music. Story telling music that feels good on the surface but has depth beyond the feeling in the lyrics.
What is the best way to get up from your falls from your experiences?
Determine why you took a lost, be honest with yourself. Make the adjustments and bounce back with a vengeance. Recovering from pitfalls is just a part of the journey. Accept yours and respect the process (journey).
Of all your lessons learned in life, what do you feel makes a person truly successful in life?
Vision, Drive and Resourcefulness. Vision provides a clear destination, with goals set to accomplish to bring you closer to realizing your vision. Drive gets you a relentless resilience to push through adversity to continue to edge closer to that vision. Resourcefulness allows you to utilize things around you that can help you. Help you limit the speed bumps and sometimes speed up the journey to realizing your vision. The process itself makes a successful person.
What are some ways you created your success in entertainment? What do you do differently from others?
By developing a quality product, and presenting it with consistency. I do a lot of research and networking to find different outlets for my music. - Baus Daily

Who is Malachi Grant and where are you from?
Well, I’m a slick talking, quick thinking positive individual driven to make music that matters to me. A college graduate street educated hip hop artist from New York representing Westchester. I aspire to be an inspiration to others to bring their dreams to fruition.
How did you discover your musical talent?
I’ve been writing and playing music instruments since I was 8 years old. I decided to pursue my talents more seriously after my first performance, at Temple University to a crowd of 800. The feeling and feedback was amazing, which made my decision effortless.
Who has been your greatest inspirations musically and why?
The inspiration is spread throughout my favorites, but as far as hip hop goes its, LL, Nas, Ma$e, Biggie, Tupac, and Rakim. All these people have their own lane, trail blazers, they stand alone. That kind of musical character is what I seek to distribute in my own way.
What do you feel you offer the music industry that we don't already have in other performers?
I would say storytelling feel good music that holds depth beyond what’s on the surface.
Have you encountered any problems in getting to this point in your career?
Of course, it’s a journey with some pot holes along the way. You just fix your whip and keep it moving knowing how to maneuver through after you hit a few.
What do you want people get from your music?
When I make music, I do so with the purpose to capture a moment’s energy a feeling. So above everything I want people to get the energy. From the songs I craft about my life experiences to better understand me.
When can we expect some new music from you?
As far as new music my album “Welcome 2 My World” is available now in on digital stores (Amazon, ITunes, Google Play, etc.). But I will release more material throughout the year.
What has been your greatest achievement so far?
My greatest achievement is my new album, I am very proud of this new body of work. It shows who I am from several different angles giving glimpses in things in my life and its progression.
If you could collaborate with one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Tupac, because he’s a reengage with a cause; it would be dope creating something new and fresh music with him.
One track of yours that you think defines you and why?
That’s a good one; every song defines different aspects of who I am. Off the new album I would say it’s a toss-up. Between “My Life” and “Where I’m from,” they both give insight into my mindset and who I am and represent. One is just more aggressive than the other.
Last but not least, HYPE wants to know...What's your CRAZIEST "Where they do that at?!" moment...
It was a hot summer day when everybody be at the court. In a 5-on-5 game, a 5’3 girl hit a 6’1 guy with 3 consecutive crosses, making his dumb ass stumble and fall to the ground. Where they do that at? Harlem, chics be balling out here. - The Hype Magazine
Tell us a little about yourself. Where you are from? How long have you been making Hip Hop?
My name is Malachi Grant and I’m from New York. Westchester County down to the Bronx. I’ve been making music since elementary school. It has always been a way to express myself artistically. During my college years at Temple University is when I started performing and perfecting my craft.
What influences you in making Hip Hop?
Everyday life. My experiences, the people in my life and my relationship with them can be heard in my music. Walking the streets of Harlem daily, you’ll always have a story to tell. Lol. But more importantly, I want to be able to connect with people and inspire others to follow their dreams.
Describe your music, and what separates you from other MCs?
My music is autobiographical even if I put things in code. It’s high on energy and walks the boarder of storytelling and feel good music. I’m an independent underground artist with a major sound. I am versatile in my topics and polished in my songwriting and that’s just the beginning, I don’t sound like anyone else, I sound like me. When the people hear my album they can judge for themselves.

I would like to work with Mase, T.I., Nas, Wale, AZ, LOX, Troy Ave, all New York artist and any artist that when blending our sounds and styles we create something fresh and unique.
Your definition of “Underground Hip Hop”?
Underground Hip Hop to me is just Hip Hop music that hasn’t surfaced yet to be appreciated by the mainstream. Its grassroots building and nurturing your talents connecting your message to the people listening for what’s next.
Production wise, who are your influences? Who does your production? And who would you like to work with?
On this new album I worked with Yung Fokus of Fokus Music Group, Flash Beats, Kid Flash, Mystro, Koncept Beats of Byrant Walker Productions, and Mike DeSilva. I’d like to work with Buda Da Future, Yung Fokus and Matthew Thurman to name a few.

My current album “Welcome 2 My World” will be released on all digital outlets February 17, 2014. It will also be available to purchase in Black Star on Lenox Ave between 127th and 128th street, in Harlem. The album has 12 song offering something for everyone to enjoy.
Can you give us a brief description of the creative process of “Welcome 2 My World” & Some background on the Album Art Design?
It started with a concept to showcase the various aspects of my life and my versatility. The album was originally called “So Much More”. I searched for different producers within various genres that blend hip hop, which I felt would complete the concept. After I recorded a bunch of songs I changed the title to “Welcome 2 My World,” because it felt like an introduction to myself with every song showing another aspect who I am.
My mom sent me an old photo of me standing in a B-Boy stance (arms crossed) back when I was like seven. British Knights on my feet a Teddy Roux on the floor. My mom had a lot of records so there were all these crates of records. When I looked at that picture it summed to me, who I am. You have the teddy bear representing how your parents try to keep you innocent growing up. The records because it’s music but I’m in the middle like I’m a B-boy.
Where can we find your music and info?
My music can be found on iTunes, Spotify etc. but you can check me out my website www.mghasmusic.com for music, videos, and interviews.
Any shout outs?
Steve Francis from Stush Music Studios for the advice, jokes and oh yeah mixing the album. My friends and family that created the moments I speak about on the album. And everyone that appreciates my music, because I appreciate you. - Underground Hip Hop Blog
Malachi Grant delivers exactly what he promises in the title of his most recent project “Welcome 2 My World”. With candor, wit, and more than a little humor, Grant tells his audience exactly how he defines his universe. Hailing from Peekskill, New York, Malachi outlines his album’s mandate at the outset with a comprehensive statement; “I can only show you what I can show you. And I can only show you me. So this is me.” Over the course of twelve infectious tracks, Malachi Grant makes good on his words by letting his audience know just who he really is.
Production on “Welcome 2 My World” is strong. The album offers YungFokus of FMG, Koncept Productions, Mystro, Flashbeats, Mike DaSilva and Kid Flash well deserved production credit for a collection of uptempo Hip-Hop beats. New York recording house Stush Music Studios crafts a consistent mix here and a crisp recording that gives valuable reference to the nuances of Malachi Grant’s mutable rap accents without neglecting the album’s vibrant instrumentals.
It seems like Malachi Grant wants what a lot of young people these days do. He craves financial freedom for his friends and family, lots of time for fun and partying for himself and a healthy career making the music he loves. But his songs tell the story of a young man with the determination to go out and get those things for himself. His complex punch lines are intelligent but don’t require a seasoned hip-hop ear. The metaphors Grant employs are accessible and funny. Each song makes you want to shoulder-dance in your seat while they’re bumping in your car speakers making this album a great listen all the way though.
The song “G ride” Malachi demonstrates a flow that is mainly contemporary and unique but, at just the right moments, offers nostalgic cues to an early Cash Money bounce rhythm alongside an adroitly crafted feature by Dunn da God. The track’s producer, YungFokus uses racing synth horns and very danceable drum and clap to highlight the point. “Lovely” shows Grant’s appreciation for the ladies on a track produced by Koncept Beats and accompanied by the high-quality vocals of Spade. My personal favorite track on the “Welcome 2 My World” is “So Much More”. Koncept Beats of Bryant Walker Productions shines once again here with a calmly triumphant boom-bap beat that screams “inspirational”. The lyrics bring the album’s original goal full circle, delineating the essential impetus for the Malichi Grant’s album; namely in terms of the Westchester rapper’s mission to serve as “a flare to the life where you do what you dare”.
As far as I’m concerned, Malachi Grant represents the totality of the Peeksill rap scene for me but he’s inspired me to look into it more. After all, “Welcome 2 My World” makes it look pretty good. I’m looking forward to seeing how far he can take his growing skills and robust motivation. As a person with substantial roots in the ol’ nine-wun-fo myself, I certainly look forward to seeing Malachi Grant go far. - Digi Indie
"I can only show you what I can show you
And I can only show you me
So this is me" - "Welcome 2 My World"
That's a relief. I thought for a second he was going to show me Waka Flocka Flame or MC AK. I kid. When you write all day long for a living, sometimes you have to stop and smell the roses, and make yourself laugh a little bit. Emcees understand this too - they are also writers for a living. That's why Malachi Grant is not afraid to take sly jabs at what dominates the airwaves in his press release, noting that his album swims in a sea full of "Bandz a Make Her Dance" and "Bitches in the Trap." Grant views himself as having a higher calling than these dumbed down raps - listing musical influences ranging from Big L to Biggie, from Rakim to Tupac. That's setting a high standard for a newcomer, but like they always say, if you don't shoot for the stars you're never going to become one yourself. Oh wait - that's what Mark David Chapman said. (Too soon? Nah. Its been almost 34 years now.)
In the background you can hear "My Life" featuring Mike Milan. It's the second song on "Welcome 2 My World" and shows much more promise than most newcomers have after their intro. Judging by a lack of liner notes I have to believe this is self-produced, but if not throw a shout out to Grant's unnamed beat wizard. I don't use the word "wizard" lightly in this context - the beat is a pleasant mixture of gritty and head nodding while keeping a carefully measured balance with the lyrics. I don't know Milan any better than I do Grant before popping this CD in, but I'm not mad at him singing the hook. They're a good tandem on the track.
Malachi gives up a little of his spotlight on three straight songs to another newcomer called Dunn Da God, so just when you think the God IS done, he's back for another one. That's alright because like Mike Milan before he's not taking Grant down a notch. He gets the solo shine back for "Flya Than," which is probably the closest thing to the people he was poking at in his one sheet. It has a little bit of that swag to the point he has to admit "Bankhead Bounce, ain't from the South" on the track and that "people say I'm from the A" when they hear it but "that's okay-kay-kay-kay-kay, I get money either way." I don't think it's a bad song, but in terms of what Grant seems to be capable of, it's not his creative peak. That comes on songs like "Signed and Sealed."
"This a love letter to my shorty sincerely
Signed sealed delivered to the times we held dearly
You're all I need like Mary and Meth
I'll be your right foot, you can be my left
Jump on the good foot just to see what's next
The first day we met, I'll never forget
To me it was all respect..."
Occasionally I find Malachi Grant falling into the traps he aspires to not be like - talking about popping bubbly on "Living My Life" and talking about "ice out the freezer, 9 millimeter, shooting non-believers" on "Party Ova Here." Grant tries very hard to position himself as unique in his one sheet, but I'm not sure I can sum up all 13 tracks as "infection party tunes with a natural NYC grit." Some songs have a little too MUCH grit - "Lovely" tends to distort when it shouldn't, as does "Have It All," suggesting the young man may be doing too much. It's impressive if he got this far all on his own, but if he'll network and put a team on it including an outside producer, he may get that much further. He's far from the rappers he name checks at this stage, but not SO FAR that he can't climb a little higher next time. How far is up to Grant. - Rap Review
“Welcome 2 My World” A fresh new album by Malachi Grant for all Hip Hop heads to enjoy. Not your typical Underground Hip Hop type of sound but rather a party, upbeat & uplifting multi-genre album with positive flavors all round. Malachi Grant clearly wants his music to be heard so he formed a unique style of music that would cater to a wide urban audience. Diversity is always a huge + in our book because when artists think “outside the box” only shows us he is a true grinder in this business.
This 12 track album offers fresh consistent lyrics, dope beats, along side great story telling from one of New York City’s best Indie Underground Rappers…………………..UndergroundHipHopBLOG.com
“My Life” ft. Mike Milan is our recommended track to bump!!! - Under Ground Hip Hop Blog
Whether you know him by his former moniker Merksmilez, or his current handle Malachi Grant; the music still Dope. In a sea of “bands making her dance” and “B****s in the trap”, Malachi’s infectious party tunes with a natural NYC grit are soothing to the hip-hop heart. What’s most impressive, is that you don’t need a hip-hop/NYC/Ebonics/// dictionary to understand Grant’s music. Energetic, fun, and real, his music is definitely for the “people”, by the “people”. His content range is an open canvas delivered with a stylistically-fresh sound, unique to Malachi.
Malachi’s musical influences read like a who’s who of 80’s and 90’s hip-hop and include LL Cool J, Big L (RIP), Rakim, the late great Biggie, Mase, Tupac, and Nas. These influences are heard loud and clear on his current single “Party Ova Here”. Too clean and cool to be hoping around the club sweating but just chill enough to do a nice diddy-bop is the feel you get when it’s played.
A man about loyalty and family to his core; Malachi’s previously released “Just That Ill”, allows us to take a peek into his world (pun intended). His current project “Welcome to My World” will allow us to look, wander, and have a seat in all that is Malachi Grant. Malachi’s musical influences read like a who’s who of 80’s and 90’s hip-hop that includes LL Cool J, Big L (RIP), Rakim, the late great Biggie, Mase, Tupac, and Nas. These influences are heard loud and clear on his current single “Party Ova Here”. Too clean and cool to be hopping around the club and sweating, and just “chill” enough to do a nice diddy-bop; is the feel you get when it’s played.
A man about loyalty and family at his core, Malachi’s previously released “Just That Ill”, allows us to take a peek into his world. Exclusive Interview
Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
I’m from Peekskill, New York. Through cultivating my talent and love for music I am here today. That’s a lot of writing, recording, networking, performing, branding; it all adds up.
Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
Off my upcoming project “Welcome to My World,” “G-Ride” captures the energy of ambition with its heavy knock, bounce, witty bars, and hook that lingers on the mind long after the song is over.
Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
The hardest challenge I’ve faced in this industry is people believing in me. When people believe and want you to win. It’s added pressure when people want you to be the best. Add that pressure to the pressure you put on yourself individually and it can wear on you, if you don’t balance it properly.
What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
I purposely stopped doing my usual aggressive line up of consistent shows so I could focus. Focus on recording this new project. With this project just about wrapped, I’m up to my old tricks.
What are some things artists need to be careful of?
Be careful of who you let in your circle because everyone doesn’t have your best interest in mind.
What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
Don’t invest in everyone’s opinion. Everyone’s opinion doesn’t add value to your music or brand. Figure out who does and build with those people.
What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
Live Performances. There’s nothing like the crowd’s energy, they’ll let you know if they’re rocking with a song or not. And you get to mingle with the audience, afterwards.
Where can people visit you?

Dec 2012 ...Radio Interview with Atlanta Radio Station Hip Hop Junkies show - ATKWEBRadio
It's not everyday that a rapper is fortunate to absorb his environment then voraciously spew content worthy of praise. Merksmilez is Bronx bred and fed with a mission to supply the opposite of ordinary. Hip hop captured this MC very early on as he used it as an educational device to teach himself to read. With those lessons Merks would go on to earn a degree majoring in business law from Temple University. Feeling more empowered he drew nearer to his musical roots and started a management company called Illview which began to piece together his hip hop legacy.
Merksmilez is a rapper with a head on his shoulders and his music showcases exactly this point. Merks is spiritually connected and wishes to convey his message through every potent song. His introspective will leap from the both directly to listeners conscious for a solid blend, the results can be found within his latest creative project Just That Ill. Merksmilez ambitious skills have laid a foundation that will carry him further than he even could have ever suspected. Yo! Raps recently connected with Merksmilez to find out his true agenda.
It's been said that one word used to describe you is tenacious. Has being so firm ever led you to making a bad decision in your career?
One time! [Laughs] I depended on some people to make something happen for me, and then they backed out. So I had a choice, make it happen on my own or focus on something different. I chose to make it happen by myself and I did. But in hindsight focusing on a new plan would have been better. But at the end of the day no one is going to know that but me [laughs].
Now I've heard about people using different models in rap music for educational purposes. I'm told that you used hip hop as a format towards learning how to read, can you elaborate?
Well, the way I was being taught how to spell and read all sounded like rhyming to me. My step dad would have us spell and he always did words that rhymed. He'd say a word you'd spell it. If you got it wrong, he'd get the Big Fat Belt [Laughs]. It isn't even funny, but it is when I think about it. Anyway, I didn't want to get it wrong so when he asked, I spelled every word and didn't let him ask me another word (i.e. r-a-t rat, c-a-t cat etc.) Plus, I would hear hip hop music where people rhymed saying slick stuff and that just made me want to know those words so I could do that too. So I pushed to improve my spelling and reading.
You have a very unique stage name, Merksmilez. How did such a name come to be placed upon your head?
I got that from my dude Rosco Young Jersey #13 [laughs], back in high school. I needed a screen name for AOL Instant Messenger and he came up with Merksmilez. It came from 2 nicknames I had; Drama, because of negative situations I would be associated with, and Smiley because people thought I smiled a lot. So he said Merk because I handled my drama and Smilez because I do smile a lot.
So you graduated from Temple University, which is a very huge accomplishment under your belt. What type of leverage do you feel your degree brings to the table as an artist working in a genre where many successfully acts have been high school drop outs?
Well I have more experiences to pull off than just high school and the world after high school that I can conceptualize into songs. I would be able to connect with more people at the start of my career than a high school dropout. I could be looked at as a role model possibly, to encourage kids to go to college and graduate. An artist that graduated from college, says, "Go to college and finish," always has a bigger impact than those saying it but haven't.
Your degree is in Law and during these harsh economical times it could be argued that there is more financial security in pursuing something in your educational background so why still be an artist?
Because I love music, and it is my #1 passion; Trailing behind at #2 is Law [laughs]. I feel I can express myself the most when I am challenging my creativity. There are no limits creatively with music. With law there are creative limits. Besides, I can become a lawyer at any age. With being a music artist you have a shrinking window of opportunity as you get older.
Philly has always had its own aspiring musical blend. While living there did you pick up any new influences or traits that you've infused into your own project?
Yea of course, subconsciously my flow changed. It's weird because I tried all these different flows just because I wanted to be versatile. And that speed flow, sounding like you not taking a breath is the flow that fits me best. I can best describe it through an artist; Eminem's flow after speeding it up on Drake's Forever song. Only I do it at a slower pace. I had to live in Philly to perfect it, and I came to Philly to get an education. [laughs]
So you're from New York, what do you think makes a New York MC be able to stand out in hip hop?
A New York MC will st - YoRaps.com
1. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself making great impressionable music, building my brand, having my company illview Inc. completely established. Illview is a management company for traditional and non-traditional talent. So i would be introducing new innovative artist/products to the industry. Five years from now let’s sit down again. I can show you better than I can tell you, you know.
2. What’s playing in your mp3 and car at the moment?
I’m playing a lot of productions that I am considering to use on my new album, mainly. But you can hear Andre3000, Jada, Fabolous, Eminem, R&B, dancehall, bachata, etc. I’m listening to anything that might inspire me.
3. Who is your favorite rapper (besides yourself)?
Besides myself, haha! I’m not my favorite rapper. My favorite rapper is actually mutual individuals for reason specific to niche. Intense lyricist like Az, Nas, Big L, Eminem, Biggie, Jada, L.O.X., Outkast, LL Cool J, earlier Mase, Mos Def, Tupac. All these artist have had rewind factor from their lyrics. Not all as commerically successful but all have an incredible catalogue.
4. What have been your best and worse experiences in the game?
The best experiences have been the completion of a heavy task like the promo Album "Just That ILL" Video "If You With Me" having my music placed on allhiphop.com every step forward is a new best experience the newer one outdoing the previous one.
The worse experiences have been having people around you that are only there for the ride and don't push anything forward but rather hold things back. Having to remove those individuals in order to make things move faster and smoothly. All those individuals are different types of people with different stories (Artists, friends, Family, producers promoters etc.). But I am sure you get the gist of the explanation. You got to stay focused anything that detours your focus needs to addressed so it doesn't happen again.
5. Who has been the best producer to work with thus far?
I'm going to have to say illview Inc. producer illphil. He produced most of the beats on my promo album, "Just That ill". I will be using some of his productions for my new album as well. As well as from other producers to convey the theme of the album
6. If you could sign to any label right now which do you see as the best fit for you?
That's a tough question....hmm.. Well It all relies on the understanding of my vision for my music with the labels vision for my music. The label has to believe in me as an artist and willing to put forth the needed energy to make my music imprint the world. I just need to feel like I can continue to be myself in general, and business must make sense for a label to be the right label for me.
7. How can people contact you for booking?
You can contact my Assistant Tiffany Timmons at tiffanytimmons527@yahoo.com for booking.

The Hip/Hop poetic mastermind of Merksmilez serves as a great example of how the Hip/Hop industry is growing. Merksmilez weaves masterful tales with his skillful flows that easily showcase the enormous talents of this young artist. In this recent spotlight with our Webzine, Merksmilez sounds off about his music and what fans can look forward to from him in the near future.
Isaac: Let’s get started with this interview. When and how did you first become interested in music? How long have you been playing music?
Merksmilez: I’ve been interested in music since when I was young and my mom would play her records. I just love the sounds, melodies, emotions connecting me to the music. I’ve be playing instruments since 3rd grade and writing songs since 8th grade and doing hip-hop music seriously for the past 5 years.
Isaac: Who would you say are your biggest musical influences and why?
Merksmilez: Funny thing is my biggest musical influence has nothing to do with music, it’s my Grandfather. He told me to be honest with myself when doing anything and represent who I am truthfully. Told me I was a dreamer, and that it takes hard work to make dreams come.
Isaac: What has been the greatest highpoint in your career so far?
Merksmilez: I feel like I’m at the highest point right now, honestly. This album is shaping up extremely well. I have the right people around me to assistant in the everlasting pursuit to the top. I’m in a good groove.
Isaac: What has been the greatest disappointment in your career so far? What did you learn from that experience?
Merksmilez: When I was getting ready for a show with information on the crowd that’s going to be there and picking songs for my set better suited for that crowd. Only to get there and see the crowd is different from the information and I only was prepared for that one type of crowd. The crowd gave me energy and liked the music. But I know if I did a different set it would have been more magical. From that, I come prepare for a number of different crowds.
Isaac: What draws you to want to play the type of music that you do?
Merksmilez: It is fun and watching how people relate and react to the music makes it worth so much more to me.
Isaac: What do you feel it takes to play this type of music that you play?
Merksmilez: I’d have to say talent, creativity and intense work-ethic to become the most skilled creative Talent. It takes a love for the music to do it right.
Isaac: What do you think you will create that will make your performances and who you are stand out in the music industry?
Merksmilez: It would have to be a body of work that showcases me as one of the most skilled creative talents currently out.
Isaac: If you had the opportunity to do one cover, what cover would you do and why? How would you put your own spin on this cover?
Merksmilez: That’s a good question, hmm well I’m going to step out of hip-hop and say Usher’s ‘Nice and Slow,’ because that song is fun and at the same time smooth. To put my own spin on it, I’d probably make it a bit more light hearted and fun with more bounce in the song energy, while keeping the smooth element of the song that makes it stand out to me.
Isaac: What does it take to be a good songwriter?
Merksmilez: I would say the ability to convey their passion and thoughts through their lyrics. Experiment lyrically and musically in their writing style to complement their unique strengths.
Isaac: How difficult is it to juggle music, family and work obligation, and life in general? Explain.
Merksmilez: Extremely, you may miss family events for music or vice versa. You could burn yourself at both ends going to work 9-5 and doing shows, going to the studio etc from 6pm-2am. Something is likely to suffer. In general, I believe you should enjoy your life and make time for yourself. Play video games with friends or basketball do something else other than music and relax. Then get right back to music etc.
Isaac: What is your definition of being an Indie artist/band?
Merksmilez: To me hands on everything! Learning everything! Grassroots development! In this Digital Era, an Indie Artist can appear to be a Major Artist/Band with the right development/Marketing Strategy/Presence. So I’d Say Grassroots Development and Hands on Everything!
Isaac: Where can fans access your music online?
