Detroit - My interview with Detroit rapper MAHD begins with a conversation about influences. When I asked him what he thinks of when he hears the term "hip-hop," he said "music" because one of MAHD's greatest influences is simply "good music."
Whether it was hip-hop or gospel, MAHD grew up listening to "good music." The 25-year-old artist was also exalted greatly by his parents who taught him to be a "better person" in general, and his older brother. "Whatever he was listening to, I was listening to. Slum Village, Royce Da 5"9..."
MAHD told me Jay Z and Michael Jackson were also major influences in his life and career. Pretty self explanatory, right? Yeah, I thought so too. But this wasn't really about their music. MAHD was speaking of their "crazy" work ethic. He identifies with the way they never stop working until they know their material is the best it can absolutely be, "I'm ALWAYS wanting to do better," he says.

"I'm always working, I have enough to put out a mixtape, but I'm not rushing. I try to make the best music possible, so I don't give myself a deadline," he tells me.
Last night, MAHD performed some songs from his highly acclaimed EP "MAHD Almighty" at Detroit's historic Saint Andrew's Hall. The show, headlined by Black Milk, featured all Detroit artists including Clear Soul Forces and Quelle Chris. MAHD was thrilled because it was his first performance at Saint Andrew's and Black Milk had handpicked the up and coming artists he felt should be there to represent Detroit. It was a huge milestone for MAHD and as he told me, "every new milestone is always something."
MAHD has always been rapping, even as a young boy, but he didn't really take it seriously until two-and-a-half years ago. There were a bunch of reasons why. He didn't really like the music he was hearing. Although MAHD was always there to lend his advice, there was talk he didn't take the music seriously, but on the other hand, people were also saying that MAHD was extremely gifted and should take this music thing further. So he was just hearing a lot of different things. And finally decided to move forward and pursue his music career more intently. From there, everything just clicked "really quickly." I love MAHD's music and was so happy to hear him tell me how hurriedly things seemed to take off, but I couldn't help but wonder about the music he had been hearing. "Was it the music on the radio?" I inquired. He explained to me that the radio was something entirely different. It's this "pocket" that only certain artists fit into. Fans who listen to the radio aren't really as interested in listening to new and innovative music. MAHD doesn't feel the music he makes really caters to the radio. BUT, "if the radio so happens to pick up on my music," he says, "then cool."
"I really want people to listen to what I'm actually saying," MAHD says. "I take pride in production. I really love dope beats, but the story and message are more important." He wants to make sure his fans, old and new, understand that he's not just rapping over a "dope" beat. He's always gonna have an "important message." You have to really listen to his lyrics. He will never just depend on the beat. He has something to say and he wants you to open your mind and your ears....
Since MAHD is a huge Detroit sports fan and I'm a huge Pistons fan, we had a little conversation about the Pistons. I asked who his favorite Piston was from the 80s era. "I was born in '88," he exclaims! "So! We won the championship in 89 and 90! I'm sure you're aware of this," I retort. "Yes, I know my sports history! Ok, Isiah Thomas! 90s-Grant Hill." I ask about now. We go back and forth because we've added so many new players and we're still in the preseason, but he finally settles on Josh Smith.
Next question: Favorite book. "Rich Dad, Poor Dad."
Favorite cartoon: MAHD couldn't choose just one, so...Family Guy, The Simpsons, DragonBall Z, and Animaniacs. All tied.
Favorite cereal: Cinnamon Toast Crunch

So I first heard of MAHD when he appeared on the Nametag & Nameless track Hookless. After becoming a fan of the song and the Detroit music scene I was able to check out more of Mahd’s music. The rapper recently dropped his debut EP ”MAHD Almighty. The 13 track EP showcases the lyrical talents of the Detroit rapper. Highlights from the EP include the tracks Red Lipstick which features John Brown as well as the track Slow Dance which features B. Wright. I like this new single/video from MAHD called “Red Lipstick”. The track produced by AWillTraxx has a fun vibe to it and has good commercial qualities to it. MAHD held it down with the bars, I’m sure the ladies will be diggin this tune. The visuals were done by Xavier Owens and the featured girl in the video is Mercedesz. Good stuff 4sho! - SugarCayne
