Luminoth: 'Cabal'
So, what kind of music did the group graduate to? The self-analysis is not too specific, but the group is insistent in declaring its openness to the infusion of multiple genres. It is a safe bet that some of the group's former inclinations toward heaviness are still in place, owing to influences such as Tool and Alice in Chains, but the musicians' ability level continues to rise as tastes mature.

I’ve been reading Jeff Wagner’s Mean Deviation: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal, a history of nerd metal that starts with Rush and King Crimson and runs through Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, and Dream Theater to Cynic, Atheist, and Opeth. It’s the perfect setup for listening to this sophomore album from local prog geeks Luminoth, who seem to have absorbed influence from all of the above. The band anchors a fairly accessible set of modern-rock songs with jazzy rhythms, oddball time signatures, and wonky instrumental breaks (like the Zappa-esque guitar solo in “The Journey”). It all fits together surprisingly well—singer Adam Henry seems comfortable with both the emotive X-rock choruses and the band’s artier leanings, and the instrumental work (by guitarist Jason Henry, bassist John Springer, and drummer Paul McGee) is as catchy as it is cerebral. The art-thrash of “Serial Crusher Theory” near the end of the disc is a highlight, and suggests Luminoth might be best at a more intense pace than the mid-tempo Tool-style dirges that make up most of Cabal. - Metro Pulse Magazine - Scripts Interactive Newspaper Group Knoxville, TN

Luminoth is like The DOORS on metal. Their sound is technical and fluid. They have a metal vibe, and their harmonies just crash off the waves of their thunderous sound. They definitely stand out especially when placed next to their peers. Luminoth is one of those bands that you want to hear more each time you listen to them. LUMINOTH is a four-man alternative/progressive rock band based out of Knoxville, TN. They have played the Rockstar Energy Drink UPROAR Festival Indy date 2011 and also the Ernie Ball Stage in VAN'S WARPED TOUR 2011 and in 2009. LUMINOTH has shared a stage with SEVENDUST, 10 YEARS, Black Tide, Art of Dying, Hell or Highwater, DROWNING POOL and OPIATE The Audio and Visual Experience of TOOL.
As fans and radio disc jockeys can attest to they are hard to categorize into an alternative subgenre. LUMINOTHs unique sound is a result of their varied music backgrounds which include everything from metal, punk, blues, jazz, and classic rock-n-roll. One local radio station DJ described Luminoth as THE DOORS on metal. Luminoth is melodic and harmonious but with a thunderous metal drive.
LUMINOTHs band members have a tight integrated chemistry on stage and this is readily apparent to their audience. Their dynamic stage presence overflows into the audience and fans have often said that they feel like they had been invited to a private jam session with the band.
Singer Adam Henry lends the band vocal power. He is melodic, virtuosic, and can deliver an explosive drive. Adam is a vocal-motive, rolling the stage experience right out into the audience like a freight train. Adam has been personally acknowledged as having an amazing voice by vocalists in some of the biggest rock bands in the nation. Adams vocal influences include: Chris Cornell, Otis Redding, Maynard Keenan, Michael Jackson, Nat King Cole, David Bowie, Johnny Cash, Phil Anselmo, and Frank Sinatra.
Bassist John Springer brings a percussive complexity to LUMNOTH and combined with his energetic stage presence he is the kinetic force behind the band. Johns bass is in the forefront of the LUMINOTH sound and has been compared to bassists Justin Chancelor and Getty Lee. (John plays a Getty Lee Signature Fender.)
Guitarist Jason Henry delivers an aggressive dark edginess that gives an impenetrable metal influence to the LUMINOTH sound. On stage, Jason goes off the grid.
Drummer Paul McGee has an outside of the box style that is a fresh musical approach to rock drumming. Paul is the intensity in the arc of LUMINOTH and a major influence in the bands progressive time signatures.
LUMINOTH is a brotherhood that grew out of mutual respect for each other as musicians from different genres. Their longtime friendship goes back to the days before they officially founded in 2005. The band states that their self-titled debut album in 2009 was like pieces of a complex music puzzle falling into place. Luminoth was about coming together for the first time as a band and dovetailing their different approaches to rock music.
Luminoths recent 2010 release titled Cabal was a three dimensional exploration of their varied music backgrounds and is a more contextualized definition of themselves as a band. Cabal brought about the usurpation of their respective genres and melded their music into a definite Luminoth sound, and as a fan stated, Luminoth is a melting pot of every piece of music that matters.
