Lucid Lynx

Dimitri Katsanevas (vocals/bass), Billy Paulsen (guitar/vocals) and Charlie Cassells (drums) are Lucid Lynx. The talented band from Boston released a three-song EP Crystallized of their performance at the WEMF radio studio.

The three songs aren’t studio quality but why would they be. It sounds live and raw, and gives you an idea of the band’s talent. They all attend Berklee College of Music so I wasn’t that surprised at how tight they were live.

They open with the title track which is a forward moving psych rock song. I was reminded of the band Tame Impala for a couple of reasons - there were specific transitions that sounded similar to specific songs. They will need to be careful about this moving forward and make sure they are able to etch out their own sound. It’s a catchy tune with tight metronome drumming and was well written.

“Otis Sperry” is more or less a psych jam from the ’70s that plenty of bands like Comets on Fire still pull off today. The band rocks out and is tight. They show off their technical ability which they don’t lack. It would be a good song to see live.

They close with a cover of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” which they do nail. They don’t do too much to reinvent the song but do a version that replaces the tones and textures of the original. This EP showcases some talent but doesn’t do too much to establish much of a signature sound.

​I think the next step for them would be to release something that digs a little deeper and I’m not talking about technical skill. That being said this is a live recording so I didn’t expect the nuance and craft of a studio album.

I think that this EP showcases a band with a good potential. I don’t know where they go from here but I wish them luck in their evolution. - Divide & Conquer Reviews
