Perhaps the most difficult aspect of writing articles or poems or anything of that nature, is the diversification of content between pieces. Sometimes, it is difficult to sit down and write even fifty words as each that comes to mind has been transcribed a thousand times by my hand to paper. Writer’s block, what a bitch. Getting out of this funk is difficult, but sometimes all a person needs is to experience someone else's passion.
Composed of the four friendliest guys you would ever meet, LOAF is a band of charmers. A true example of what it means to be involved in music; Nich, David, Jeremy, and Mackenzie play eight instruments between them, many of which subscribe to the brass band order of things. Though you may not see Nich’s alto sax at every show, the years of music theory and classical instruction are evident every time he stands on stage.
What is most interesting is just how committed to music these boys really are. Nich, Jeremy, and David have been playing together since 2013, back when everything was oh so simple and high school was a fucking joke. After pulling Mackenzie on to the team in 2014, the stage was set for LOAF to really begin their production. After four years of finishing up studies and growing into the nineteen year olds that they are today, it finally seems like the boys are ready to strike out and make 2018 their year.
Holding nothing back, LOAF came out of 2017 with a new recording of their song “Flowers Blooming”. Set to be released on QPWT’s Valentine’s Day Album on the 14th of February at the Smiling Buddha, this song aims to be LOAF’s first of many recordings this year. With hopes high to get an EP out later this year, expectations are set for this newly invigorated band. With influences taken from their years of experience in the field, LOAF has managed to cultivate a sound that not only resists classification, but diversifies from song to song, stretching the bounds of their prowess. Though best described as jazz rock fusion on an alt rock base, LOAF is indeterminable, seeking to not fall into any form of classification outside of that outlined by themselves. This is why they are great.
Growing up playing Battle of the Bands in high school, LOAF played into the nerdy niche of the arts market, receiving an upwelling of support from their high school community. LOAF is an original. From making it work on the high pressure, pre-university stage, to laying down tracks in David’s studio (a basement converted to recording studio, DIY style), LOAF does not require validation, but the support of the community that they love so much. These hilarious gentlemen are in it for the love of the music and love of each other, perhaps the most honorable of reasons to be excited about anything. - QPWT Collective - Noah H. Walker
