It has been a decade and a few years and Lara George is still standing tall and strong.
When we talk of Lara, we remember how it all began, from a group of singers who wanted to change their world. KUSH was a strong and very popular inspirational music group that was full of promise and after their breakup, members of the group went separate ways to different paths. Lara George and Ty Bello went out and continued making music as gospel inspirational artists and have been quite successful at that. Lara George has since released several albums and songs, became a household name and won several awards all through the years.
“Ijoba Orun”, Lara George’s hit single from her album Forever In My Heart released in 2008, went on to become the most listened and sung gospel song in Nigeria, stamping Lara George as one of gospel music’s most rated artists that year and in the years after. Vanguard newspaper tagged her “The African Queen Of Gospel Music” in 2012.
In 2010, she won the Best Vocal Performance (Female) at the Headies Awards.
This was a major break and opportunity among others before that for Lara George who we remember in 2014 told us about how KUSH break up had a great effect on is group members, in a =n interview with REPORTER, from Independent. - Exclusive Gospel

As one of Nigeria’s leading female contemporary artistes, Lara George has won the hearts of her audiences all across the nation and beyond with her soulful, intense and lyrically adept inspirational style delivered with the finest vocal expertise. Perhaps the most unique thing about her is the enigmatic mix of qualities that her songs have- passionate, fun, insightful, exhilarating and classic – all at the same time, yet always centering on the theme of Godly living.
Lara George’s solo career began with the release of her debut album ‘Forever in My Heart’ in 2007, which featured the hit track ‘Ijoba Orun.’ The album received rave reviews and nominations for Best Vocals Female – Hip Hop World Awards 2008, Best Gospel Act – Nigeria Entertainment Awards USA 2008. She was again nominated and went on to win awards in both categories in 2010, alongside also the City People Awards for Best Gospel Artiste of the Year 2010. Other awards received include Voice of the Year (Female) – Nigeria Music Awards 2008, as well as Best Gospel Song and Best Female Gospel Artiste – Nigeria Gospel Music Awards 2009. In the year 2011, her nominations include Best Female Artiste and Best Album of the Year, both for the National Gospel Awards 2011, as well as awards for ‘Gospel Artiste of the Year 2011’ Nigeria Entertainment Awards USA, the Pastor Bimbo Odukoya Foundation Award for ‘Female Gospel Artiste of the year 2011.’
Following the massive success of her debut solo album, her sophomore work was then released in August 2009, featuring hit singles such as ‘Kolebaje’ and ‘Halleluyah’ The result of a production collaboration between Nigeria’s prolific Music Producers Wole Oni, Wole Adesanya and America’s Jeff Taylor (who has worked with musical legends Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Boyz2Men etc), this album was nominated in the following categories of the 2009 Nigeria Music Video Awards: Best Gospel Video, Best Use of Animation and Best Use of Special Effects.
In the year 2012, Lara was recognized as Africa’s ‘Best Female Gospel Artiste ‘ in the Africa Gospel Music Awards, held annually in London,UK.
She released her third solo album titled ‘HIGHER-the Dansaki Album’ in July 2012 , which has already gone on to receive various nominations including Song of the Year and Female Gospel Artiste of the Year amongst others, for the Crystal Awards. In the Africa Gospel Music Awards (AGMA) held annually in London, United Kingdom, she was awarded the Female Artiste of the Year 2012 as well as the Trailblazer Award for 2013. She is also the Female Vocalist of the Year 2014, Crystal Awards Nigeria
As a Gospel Artiste, Lara George has a vision to see all people all over the world ‘empowered through God’s Word in my songs. To somehow help others see the God-perspective as it relates with real issues encountered day to day, and to realize that success is not reserved for just a few. I hope to give hope and encouragement, and to inspire the uninspired.
Her musical journey can be traced all the way back to the year 2000 when she was part of the hugely popular Nigerian inspirational group KUSH. This was the first Nigerian group with an international record deal (signed on to independent label DKG Music USA). The KORA awards-nominated group (another first) was also the premier Nigerian group to feature on and top the Channel ‘O’ charts , before going on to become a multiple award winning group. KUSH toured worldwide at events such as The Experience, Lagos Nigeria 2009, Festival of Life London UK, Believers’ Bible conference Lagos Nigeria, Greenbelt Festival Cheltenham UK, the Nigerian Reunion New Jersey USA and many others, and have performed alongside international acts such as Femi Kuti, Joe, Guru and Marvin Winans to mention a few.
An architect by training, Lara George holds a B.E.S/B.Arch (M.Sc equivalent) from the University of Lagos Nigeria. She is not only a musician but also a music entrepreneur.
As a testament to her contribution to music, she has been recognized on an international level by being inducted into the BET Voting Academy.
Lara George is married to Gbenga George- a legal practitioner- and together, they have 2 children. - Kora Awards
