La Guerre is the solo project of Katlyn Conroy from Cowboy Indian Bear. SHOUT OUT to my pal Nate for sending this gem to me because it’s fantastic. It’s beautiful. It’s dark. And I’m just going to say it: It’s the album you wanted from St. Vincent, but didn’t get it. And don’t get me wrong here, I love Ms. Annie Clark as much as the next person. La Guerre (pronounced “lah-gare” and French for 'The War') is the solo project of Katlyn Conroy, a singer-songwriter based in Lawrence, Kansas. Conroy is also a member of popular local band Cowboy Indian Bear, a fantastic splurge of DIY pop and indie.

Violent is La Guerre's second solo effort, following the excellent The Three EP which was released earlier this year. Don't be put off by the somewhat fierce sounding name and EP title. La Guerre's music is the antithesis of its content. Conroy’s soft, sultry vocals combine with electronica beats to create an emotive record which holds attention every track. Expect Conroy's signature keys to play a stand out role on most of La Guerre's songs, and take central position for instrumental “Landbreak”. It's Conroy’s vocals that you hold out for; expect chills as her subtle intonations and vocal curls give away her emotions every step of the way.

The haunting harmonies on “Chased” make this EP worth listening to alone, but if there’s any track that will push her to the mainstream it’s “Sorrow Song”, which has more than a touch of The XX and London Grammar about it.

Jamais La Guerre n’a semblé si douce. Bercée par une cadence lente, la voix de Katlyn Conroy irrigue l’espace avec émotions, bordé par des vagues pop électro. Déjà auteur d’un premier EP The Three, la demoiselle vient de dévoiler son second intitulé Violent.

Ne vous fiez pas à son nom un peu guerrier, ni au titre de son album qui semble s’inscrire dans la violence du siècle, car derrière ce vocabulaire à la flèche et à la hache acerbes, se cache en fait un havre de paix loin des combats ordinaires. Ce 7 titres navigue en des contrées aux notes délicates, à l’âme sensible où la pérégrination est une douceur sans nom.

Là, la voix de Katlyn hante les boucles de claviers romantiques, où une mélodie décalée se déploie comme une boîte à musique trafiquée par les rêves ombrés et des désirs nuageux. Ici, résonne un folk pop empli de caresses irréversibles, de vagues au soulèvement irisé et de respirations en apesanteur, comme sur Chased. Alors la torpeur en échos et une cadence surannée et vintage se pâme aux milieux des harmonies limpides comme une source sauvage.

Les rivages de ces titres sont des notes en soupirs, formant des ballades touchantes portées par la voix de Katlyn Conroy, dans la lignée de Mazzy Star. La promenade sur les terres de La Guerre ne sont pas des prises de territoires ou des interventions armées, mais des randonnées loin des guerres civiles où la pérégrination emporte par la valse des émotions comme sur Demonic.

Nul coup de poing tapis dans l’ombre, nul gifle à l’horizon, mais une étreinte floue et une silhouette formées d’harmonies douces comme sur Focus, poignante et infinie. Les mélodies sont ici délicieusement entêtantes, presque intemporelles comme si le temps se suspendait de lui-même, tendant l’oreille pour mieux se délecter de cette parenthèse enchantée. Alors Lovers Sway glisse tel un pas de danse solitaire, léger, où la mélancolie, en touches disparates, esquive une gravité trop coupante.

Les notes dansent sous des tempos singuliers et les harmonies planent comme sur Sorrow Song, laissant démuni face aux émotions défilant et nappant tout l’espace. Délicatesse des sens, La Guerre s’en va et vous perd sous des mélodies pleines de nostalgie, baignées par un calme serein, terminant Violent sur un espoir sombre intitulé I Will Find You. De là, le monde est à reconstruire.

Ici, la bataille est celle des sentiments, le combat un corps à corps sensuel, la lutte une note désarmée par la subtilité des harmonies, l’affrontement, un pas de deux avec la Guerre et son onirisme. Elle semble dire sur cet EP « A celui qui détruit tes rêves, déclare la guerre sans hésiter. » - Pause Musicale

If your life's been lacking some sultry and emotive female vocals that fill your ears with wonder and magic then drop everything and get this tune on. Katlyn Conroy from Kansas is the lady who goes by the name of La Guerre and we kind of stumbled upon her work by accident, after featuring another act that was being taken care of by the same PR. As stumbles go, we've converted this one into a prefect ten acrobatic roll. You know words like spellbinding, bewitching, enchanting, magical, captivating, engrossing and so on? Yeah, all of those.

We can tell you little about La Guerre herself or of her past releases, but it seems she's been making music since 2010 at least. The quite beautiful and dreamy 'Sorrow Song' is the lead single from her 'Violent' EP, a name that is totally at odds with these fantastical sounds. How she's not a star yet is a bit puzzling as everything seems in place. Perhaps is simply a lack of material out on the market so far. If there are a few more tunes like this awaiting then we're tipping her for much acclaim. - The Sound of Confusion
