Firepower has recruited a new foot soldier to the ranks, and we have every intention of deploying him to the front lines where the heaviest beats are blasting dance floors to pieces. John Phelps, AKA Jphelpz, is known for creating heavy Dubstep smashers with his own variety of robotic, mechanical sounds melded with the darker and swampier elements of bass music. On June 24th, Firepower will release his much-anticipated EP Living Dead, a four-track barrage of bass with enough artillery to awaken the once-living.

Heavily influenced by the musical styling of Getter and Funtcase, Jphelpz brings a terrifying edge to Dubstep production. The first track on the EP, “Summon the Dead”, offers a scorching pre-emptive attack on the mental faculties and continues, execution style, through “Brains”, a classic Dub collaboration with the always impressive Algorethym. The third track, “Necromancer”, is a straight buzzsaw through the braincase. Jphelpz’s emphasis on heavily mechanized synths is an obvious attempt to entrance the dead from the grave. When you get to “Living Dead”, it’s already too late. You’re trapped and have to fight your way out. Honestly, the current state of dubstep is in a really weird place at the moment. After experiencing tons of success across the U.S. during 2010 and 2011, the booming genre took a bit of a backseat to house and trap during the past couple years. But something has smelled different in the 2014 EDM air. Sets don’t look – or feel – quite the same. Upon looking more closely, you’ll notice that there is a bass music shift that’s slowly taking place. Trust me, if you’ve listened to recent live sets from big name artists like 12th Planet, Datsik, & Excision, it’s pretty darn obvious that they are just itching to get back on board the dubstep express. All aboard everybody! The train is leaving the station.
Speaking of producers like 12th Planet, Datsik, & Excision, they all have one thing in common – an undeniable affinity for JPhelpz productions. C’mon people, how could these masters of hard and heavy dubstep not take notice of this ear-assaulting prodigy? He’s been popping up all over the place lately! First it was his Genius LP released via Prime Audio and now Firepower Records brings us his raunchy Living Dead EP.
These four new dubstep tunes are specifically aimed at the most tough and rugged individuals, so please be careful about pressing that play button if you are ill-equipped to handle bloodthirsty bass music. Personally, I haven’t been able to stop blasting “Brains” since the second I first heard it and “Summon The Dead” is that type of musical nastiness that I go to bed dreaming about late at night. Oh yeah, and the other two tracks aren’t too shabby either. Truth be told, I could make a very strong argument that this release might be the most dominant dubstep EP of 2014 thus far. If you love filthy, disgusting, bass-filled robotic Dubstep, then you already know JPhelpz; even if you’ve never heard his name before. This young Illinois producer has been carving out a name for himself within the Dubstep community for years now and has only recently started to get kind of widespread the recognition he deserves. His masterfully filthy sound design has earned him the respect of such well known artists as Funtcase, 12th Planet, Cookie Monsta, Vaski, Protohype, Biome, Mantis and more. With releases on labels such as D-Jahsta’s Xenomorph Recordings, Abducted Records, Prime Audio, and now Datsik’s Firepower Records, Jphelpz is no stranger to the EDM network. In fact he’s been something of a secret weapon on the dance floor for names big and small for quite a while now, but that is rapidly starting to change.
