John DeRosa of Phillipsburg, a longtime musician who works as a filler in Martin’s pre-finishing department, ended the ceremony debuting an original song, titled “13.” The number symbolizes not only the amount of stripes on the American flag but the amount of times guards make folds to the flag at the time of a burial ceremony. DeRosa said he decided to write the patriotic tune after reading an article in August 2021 about fallen soldiers in Afghanistan and a pilot returning bodies from the conflict. One of the deceased soldiers left behind a wife and 5-year-old son, DeRosa said.
When he read an excerpt about how the folded flag was all some families had left to remember loved ones, DeRosa said he became moved to do something to send a message. DeRosa wrote the lyrics and the melody in a week with most of the thoughts coming to him as he worked a quiet 2nd shift.
The “13″ song is available here. DeRosa performed it at a gala this past April for Operation Jersey Cares, as well as on the television show, “Fox and Friends.” It was recently recorded at Holland Studios in Bethlehem, he said.
Within two days of submission, the song was downloaded 1,190 times on American music streaming platforms and another 164 times in Germany, DeRosa said. He hopes to donate any proceeds he receives from the music to families of deceased and wounded U.S. war veterans.
DeRosa said in an interview with lehighvalleylive.com following the performance he hopes both the Martin Guitar veterans exhibit and song make people walk away and think. Perhaps, then they’ll also be moved to make a difference, he said. - Lehigh Valley News
