As someone who's love for hip hop has waned in the last couple of decades or so due to its rage against the women folk, it's nice to hear an MC who keeps the spirit of the game alive, but is sincere enough to take the high road when it comes to crafting flows. The Brooklyn-based J. Keys does what I wish a lot of rappers would do as he pays homage to all the women in the hip-hop industry and beyond on "Diggin' In the Crates For Love." With a crisp and clear flow, he name checks dozens upon dozens of femme fatales from decades past, as he goes from Queen Latifah to Lauryn Hill then takes a u-turn to give props to the R&B/soul set, showing love to the likes of Patrice Rushen, Sheila E., Jody Watley, and so on and so on. It's really a great retrospective of all the women of color who have been inspirations, especially to guys of J. Keys' ilk throughout the years, and Keys' aural love letter is just perfect for celebrating Black History Month.
