JHONATAN OSPINA

Born in Colombia, based in the United States, and frequently active in São Paulo, Jhonatan Ospina is one of the most authentic names in the global techno scene.

With his unique hybrid performances, where he stands out for his control of the theremini – a Moog synth that corresponds to a modern version of the theremin, one of the first electronic instruments created, in which hand gestures are captured by sensors and converted into sounds – he produces a combination of pulsating and immersive beats with captivating melodic elements.

His musical approach, which encompasses genres such as melodic techno, minimal, and progressive techno, is characterized by a blend of powerful rhythms and deep sonic textures, creating a hypnotic, profound, exciting, and meaningful atmosphere on the dance floor.

Influenced by names like Giorgia Angiuli, Richie Hawtin, Joseph Capriati, Monika Kruse, and Pan-Pot, the DJ and producer based in Miami began his musical journey by studying audio engineering at the SAE Institute Miami in 2020, where he had classes with Grammy winner (and three-time Latin Grammy winner) Shafik Palis.

“During my studies, I had the opportunity to learn about recording, mixing, and music production, which only increased my interest in the world of electronic music,” says the artist, who was equally influenced by his brother’s work in techno event production in his hometown of Medellin at the age of 14 in 2000.

“Being a part of these events allowed me to dive into the techno scene, listen to renowned artists, and experience the contagious energy of the dance floors,” he adds.

While living in Colombia, Ospina even worked in his family’s food business and studied graphic design until he realized that his true passion was music.

After graduating from SAE in 2022, he started releasing his own music on digital platforms, and little by little, he has been reaping the rewards with his productions. A staunch advocate for the environment, he also stood out with his live performance in November, presented and recorded at a recycling center in Tulum, Mexico, to draw attention to the cause.
