After starting this year off strong with the “Choice” single, R&B/soul artist Jason Biyo has followed up with a true successor in “Numb,” which will serve as the lead track off his similarly-named debut EP, N.U.M.B. The seven-track release is slated for June 5th. According to Biyo, his recent single centers around what becomes of someone once recognizing the commonly fickle nature that is revealed, whether outright or gradually, among fans supporting an artist.
The single’s instrumental foundation is its initial highlight feature, as it draws from smooth, slow, urban nuances reminiscent of the early 2000s. Its warm synth tones provide a decent pad for bolstering Biyo’s vocal tonality, both its primary stature during the verses, supplemental call-and-response harmonies, and the chorus. In general, the song’s presentation does a lot to complement the fittingly muted color palette, as well as the concept, of its cover art. The thematic standpoint is just as well implemented throughout, as its context can also be applied to friends and peers. I look forward to how this angle will be further implemented both sonically and lyrically once the EP drops. - Music Existence
If you yearn for the good old days when artists wrote R&B the way it was meant to be, then Jason Biyo is your draft pick, and for very good reasons.
Coming out the gate with the highly anticipated debut single “Numb” from his upcoming album ‘N.U.M.B.’, Jason brings forth a signature sound that gives great callbacks to 90s/early 2000s R&B and Pop sensibilities with a tasteful blend of today’s more modern era all wrapped up into one tightly knit package for die hard fans of the genre. With innovative use of his mid to high vocal range, Jason brings strength to this track with excellent melody choices and backup harmonies that encompass an essence similar to industry heavyweights like Usher and Ne-Yo.
As the title says, “Numb” tells a story about those who say they’ll be there for you, but always end up letting you down in the end no matter how much effort you put in. It’s a song that can easily resonate with you as a listener, and although the concept is fairly known, Jason sings it in a way where his vocal delivery makes the song more about how he delivers the message, not necessarily the message itself. He’s an effective, accessible artist that will be loved among all R&B fans both old and new, and brings a fresh dynamic to the genre that will undoubtedly make him standout. The production value on this song is also a treat, keeping the musicianship factors fresh, inventive, and traditional all at the same time.
“Numb” is available now on all mainstream digital music platforms. His 7-track EP/Album drops on June 5th, and will also be available on the same platforms. You’ll be more than glad we recommended Jason Biyo, you’ll be seeing (and hearing) his name much more this year. - Artist Reach LLC
There is something of the flexibility and phrasing of Terence Trent D’Arby in Biyo’s vocal. And that flexibility in portamento and styling is complimented by stacking up his voice to a degree of delicious lushness that’s quite unusual. The choice of harmonies feels similar to choices that Beyonce’s arrangers might employ.
Vocals are used in stacks to help drive rhythm and add huge swathes of padded warmth to proceedings. It’s truly used as an instrument in all senses. It’s impressive. The ululating depth of Biyo’s vibrato adds movement within the stacks, making it a kinetic set of performances rather than simply ‘here is a pile of harmonies’.
Incredibly hypnotic, Numb scoots by in 3 very short minutes that will have you wondering if you blinked and missed it. The mix itself is enormous, huge slabs of sound that have been compressed so that everything feels louder than everything else, and there’s a wonderful sense of swirling excess about the whole thing, which adds an almost psychedelic flavour to the listening experience.
Subby slabs of bass nail down the bottom end, while the snikkity-kliks of electronic percussion rain down on the chorus to elevate it with brightness – enough to blast any amount of cobwebs away. A washy guitar part floats in the background…
This is distinctly accomplished, and I imagine the vocal sessions alone must have taken a long time to write and organise. Impressive, and over far too soon. - Stereo Stickman
Today I had the opportunity to review an amazing new single titled "Numb" from rising R&B artist Jason Biyo. This dude has pipes! After listening to this track, I have no doubt that Jason Biyo will be the one to usher in the best era of R&B music.
The song opens up with an ethereal synthesizer - an instrumental choice which helps to prepare the senses for Jason Biyo’s heavenly vocals. Following the first verse, the 808 drops, creating a deep sonic atmosphere that reels you in even further. It creates a sense of urgency that doesn’t go away.
In my opinion, the thing that separates Jason Biyo’s sound from others is his vocal layering technique. He’s got killer harmonies - his thick vocal sounds transport you to another world. If I had to describe the harmonies, they sound both futuristic AND nostalgic. It’s a very difficult sound to achieve, and yet somehow Jason Biyo achieved it.
Jason Biyo’s “Numb” is a masterpiece.
