"New York-born Jae Cabrera relocated to Burlington last summer"

By Kathryn Dunmore - Guest Contributor
From New York to Burlington, singer and songwriter Jae Cabrera pursues his music locally, including a recent anti-bullying tour throughout local Greater Toronto Area schools.

Performing in Conquer the Fear, along with Canadian artists Alexi Couto and Brad Ford, hip hop journalist Raoul Juneja and actor Shane Kippel, Cabrera shared his experiences with bullying growing up as well as his original song, She Wants It All.

“We went across Mississauga, Brampton and Etobicoke to speak to 9-12 graders about bullying,” said Cabrera. “The response was amazing; we’ll be doing more dates. To hear from them how grateful they were that we were there and so much of what we were sharing they related to, it was definitely very cool and inspirational — the fact we can reach out to even one of them to hear our message.”

She Wants It All was inspired by Cabrera’s wife and their relationship.

“It’s inspired not only by my relationship but relationships in general and their ups and downs,” he explained.

“There is never that perfect relationship but it’s possible to have it all.”

Born and raised in Queens and Manhattan in New York, Cabrera, along with his wife and son, moved to Burlington last summer.

“My musical journey started with R&B, and shifted to a bit more pop and dance,” he noted. “Now that I’ve found my style, it’s defintely a mix of pop and R&B with an uptempo dance vibe.”

Cabrera had previously worked with another Burlington musician, Violett Jean, in a production company in New York City. He also worked with Couto there and it was her management group that helped Cabrera to perform here now that he has settled in his new home.

Cabrera is working on new material and recently produced a music video for his song, Snap.Flash.Picture, which can be found on YouTube, while other songs can be found on Soundcloud.

“My next step is finding venues to play shows within Burlington and throughout the Toronto area as well. I have a lot of exploring to do.”

"Recession-Friendly Entertainment in the New Economy: TheSet NYC"

I had the chance to check out theSet NYC's February 25th show last week at the New World Stages' Time Out New York Lounge. TheSet NYC is a 2-hour monthly showcase featuring a diverse lineup of musicians, comedians, poets, dancers, and even contortionists. Yes, contortionists! Unfortunately, I missed the show with the contortionist, but I was able to see the following talented folks, and we had a terrific time:

"Front Row At The Set"

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending The Set NYC – Time Out New York’s monthly showcase of up and coming stars in the performing arts.
Held in an intimate, trendy lounge at off-Broadway theater New World Stages, The Set features a rotating cast of comedians and musicians, and even magicians, contortionists and poets.

Before the lights went down, I chatted with handsome, charismatic co-host and St. Louis native Kai Raziq about his experiences living abroad in Italy. Producer Pim Shih told me he was an aspiring comedian himself when he joined forces with a veteran entertainment producer to launch The Set.

Kai and comedian Scout Durwood kept the 90-minute show moving with their hilarious banter and amped up introductions of the evening’s six performers. Up first, singer/songwriter J. Cabrera, delivering R&B with a dash of Justin Timberlake’s vocal and sartorial stylings.

""Slowjam Sessions" Vol.1 review"

Jordan Segundo, Forté and Tani Lynn Fujimoto represent Hawaii is this aptly named light-pop anthology. Anyone who's missed Forté since Marlene, Jo, Kay and Gee went their separate ways will find several other acts here with pretty much the same sound. (The bio information provided on them here, however, is years out of date.)

Adventurous listeners will discover performers from New York, Michigan and California whose styles mesh perfectly with the light-pop of the Hawaii stars. The roster includes several interchangeable girl groups and solo female vocalists, two male vocal groups and an androgynous-sounding male.

One of the best songs is "Girl of My Dreams," an original by New York's J Cabrera that could easily be a hit here. - Honolulu Star-Bulletin

"Jae Cabrera: “Show Out” – smooth crooning, edgy rap and a cutting edge electronic beat"

R&B Singer-songwriter Jae Cabrera has been singing since the age of 5. And since he attempted to make his passion his living, he has experienced it all. From performing in a boy band to collaborating and writing material for big league productions by Kadis & Sean (G-Unit) and Dave Liang (The Shanghai Restoration Project, Carl Thomas). In between he has also found the time to sign with record labels, have singles on commercial radio, and record his debut EP. Now Jae has refocused his craft with the release of his new single, “Show Out”, which sees him again collaborating with Angelo “Doc” Velasquez, and King Patrick at Crashdummies Music.

As a musician, music lover, and music collector, I can say, without reservation, that “Show Out” ranks with some of the most sincere, genuine, crossover R&B/Pop music. I’ve just listened to the single for about the tenth time and I am simply overwhelmed by what Jae Cabrera has brought to the table.

This is music for musicians, music for those who really appreciate the craft, yet also for those who simply enjoy music for the sake of being entertained. I won’t go note by note, but the cut is a great expression of an amalgam of source styles – smooth crooning, edgy rap and a cutting edge electronic beat.

The song is a sultry, intoxicating groove with the kind of subtle production that is captivating to ears. Earthy, enchanting, uplifting, mesmerizing are only some of the words you could use to describe Jae Cabrera’s vocal delivery. Jae’s voice is indescribably sensual – bringing to mind quite a few other R&B singers.

He is one of the few R&B artists that have preserved the legacy of this music that has substance to it and is timeless. There is only a hand full of artists today who have this kind of talent and appeal to capture the ear of the very discriminating listener for good music – by keeping it commercially appealing with the sounds of today, but at the same time is carrying the torch for that classic sound, if you know what I mean.

Jae Cabrera’s compositions are filled with tenderness and attentiveness to detail in words and music. “Show Out” is a treasure to listen to repeatedly for days as this music feeds the mind, heart and spirit of the listener with awesome realizations in soft, sexy and romantic tones. - jamshpere.com

Bio

With years’ worth of experience and songs under his belt, Jae was more than ready to bring his music to a broader audience and had finally found a label that was ready to move with him. Nemesis wasted no time and quickly got Jae on the radio in NYC and launched a website for the singer so fans could keep updated with what Jae was doing.

Jae continued to build a name for himself through the underground music scene, and recorded music for his debut EP on Nemesis Records. His single I Don't Mind, got some well-deserved radio play at major R&B and Hip Hop station WBLS 107.5 and was being requested at other local stations.

With a couple of singles that lit up New York commercial radio, Jae was then approached by Kristine Sa to co-write for "Hopeless Romantic". By doing this, Jae put his own project on hold to pursue other music projects, which helped him gain further notoriety within the music industry.

Through Jae’s progression within the music industry, he was writing lyrics that quickly became gelled into full blown songs. These songs were in collaboration with expert production by Kadis & Sean (G-Unit) and Dave Liang (The Shanghai Restoration Project, Carl Thomas). Jae reintroduced himself to the music scene with now a different flare on such songs as "For You", and "What's It Gonna Take". From here Jae then continued to re-collaborate with Angelo "Doc" Velasquez, and King Patrick, at Crashdummies Music, in which they produced a slew of new material, including his new singles Show Out and She Wants It All. Smooth as ever, Jae Cabrera steps out of the background and back into the spotlight where he belongs.

As Jae's popularity grows and more people are exposed to his music, there is no doubt that his music will resonate with everyone within the industry and the world.

A Singer / Songwriter who infuses both R&B with Pop music creates songs that reflect many artistic forms. Soulful and energetic are only a few words to describe the style of Jae Cabrera’s music. A veteran to the music industry, Jae’s music not only reflects today’s trendy sounds, it keeps his listeners wanting more, and that’s what keeps Jae motivated and excited about writing music that his fans can enjoy.

As an artist who has grappled with many sounds and written many songs, his determination and perseverance as a recording artist throughout the years has shown his passion, patience and his continued success as he continues to work on perfecting his sound with his production team.

Singing since the age of 5, Jae decided to try his hand at making his passion his living. He answered an ad in New York’s Village Voice for a male vocal group. He set out with the goal of being apart of this newly formed group. He auditioned with a song he had written himself, and was made a member the next day. Being in a new boy band, came with many opportunities, which allowed Jae to meet various industry people. Through this, Jae met producer Angelo "DOC" Velasquez. The two soon collaborated and began writing music together, eventually turning their collaborations into Jae's songs: I Don't Mind, Don't Break My Heart, and Girl in My Dreams. Jae was then signed to an independent label, where he spent two years working with the label. As time progressed, Jae left the label and began booking his own shows and promoting himself anywhere he could.

Performing one night at a NYC bar, Jae caught the attention of Nemesis Records CEO Kingmin, who immediately approached Jae about working with the label.
