“This is probably one of the best turnouts for the first concert of the season that I’ve seen,” Comissioner Dennis Bagdo said. - The Mokena Messenger
Main Park was rocking and rolling Thursday, June 8, as Chicago area-based band Identity Crisis played a variety of music, including hits originally recorded by Dean Martin, Garth Brooks, Bruno Mars and Stevie Wonder.
“They’re more of a modern band, but they play a little bit of everything,” said Rebecca Phetteplace, recreation supervisor of special events at the Mokena Community Park District. “In July, we’re having the Stingrays.”
Looking to provide children with activities to keep them moving, Phetteplace gave away Frisbees and jump ropes for them to play with.
“It’s just an enjoyable time,” she said. “It’s something families can come to.”
The free concert was a part of the park district’s annual Summer Concert Series, which features one live concert each month in June, July and August. The park district is hoping to have the band shell at Yunker Farm complete for other concerts this summer, said Mike Selep, executive director of the Mokena Community Park District. The band shell is only one of the many new park amenities opening this summer, he said.
“For the summer, we’re very excited because we have some brand-new amenities opening up,” he said. “… We’re excited to be able to serve the Mokena residents in a variety of ways.”
A new splash pad, expansions to The Oaks Recreation & Fitness Center and a new dog park are among the other amenities opening this summer, he added.
Once the band shell opens, the park district is anticipating expanding its live music programs, possibly offering more than one concert per month during the summers, Phetteplace said.
“Hopefully, next year, we’ll be able to have more concerts because we’ll have the band shell,” Phetteplace said.
Commissioners Dennis Bagdon and Jeff Apel attended the Thursday concert. Both were enthusiastic about the park district’s plans for the summer.
“It’s going to be a great season for us,” Bagdon said.
“It’s going to be a great summer,” Apel added. “The Splash Pad is opening, [and] all of our facilities are ready to go.”
Bagdon noted that the season was off to a good start, as Thursday’s concert drew a nice-sized crowd.
“This is probably one of the best turnouts for the first concert of the season that I’ve seen,” he said.
Despite the fact that the band shell wasn’t ready, community members enjoyed the opportunity to spend time outside with their friends and family, listening to live music.
“We have three little ones, so we love the open atmosphere to bring them to come and play and spend time with neighbors and friends,” said Carrie Grabowski, a Mokena resident who attended the concert on Thursday with her husband, Chris Grabowski, and a group of friends and neighbors.
The family has attended several of the park district’s concerts during the past few summers, Carrie said.
“It’s fun for the summer, we do love it,” she added. “It’s really so nice that they do it.”
Kelly and Sean Rankin recently moved to Mokena, and they said they thought the free concert was a great opportunity to bring family and friends together to celebrate their son’s second birthday.
“It’s a fun idea,” said Kelly.

Thousands of local residents swarmed to 95th Street and Cook Avenue for the first two days of Oak Lawn’s 17th annual Fall On the Green, lured by the smell of roasted corn and the sound of retro cover bands.
The Budweiser Beer Tent was jam packed for Rolling Stones’ tribute band Tumbling Dice for the fall frolic's Friday night opening of the three-day fest.
While teens may not have cared for some of the retro 70s and 80s tribute bands that their parents and grandparents were boogeying to, there were plenty of activities for the "yewts."
The most popular teen attraction is the water ball pond, new this year at Fall On the Green. Teens crawled into deflated plastic bubbles as wranglers pumped them full of air with leaf blowers. After the bubbles were inflated, the kids inside walked up a ramp poolised and rolled into the water.
I went back for a second ear of roasted Iowa sweet corn on Saturday at the Oak Lawn Rotary Corn booth located in the Food Court. I plan to go back for more corn on Sunday. The large, generous ears from the Hawkeye state were roasted to perfection on a rotisserie and then gently swirled in melted butter.
Dr. Michael Riordan, superintendent/principal of and Rotary master corn roaster, said there almost wasn’t a corn booth this year because of the drought. Didier Farms hustled up just enough ears for Fall On the Green.
Riordan and fellow Rotarian Dennis Evashenk demonstrated their master corn roasting technique for Patch.
The Rotary Corn Booth is conveniently located next to the food booth, which was selling a wicked pulled pork sandwich slathered with barbecue sauce and covered in deep fried onions and coleslaw.
The rain held off until after Saturday night’s fireworks show following Journey tribute band Infinity’s concert. The 'work's were shot off from the old Beatty Lumber Yard at 52nd Avenue and 96th Street, sending the neighborhood's possum population running for their lives.
There is one more day left to enjoy Fall On the Green. So stop commenting on Oak Lawn Patch and get down to the Village Green. The fest runs from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. today (Sunday). Admission, rides and entertainment are free, but you have to pay for the games (which are offering family deals), food and beer.
P.S. There are plenty of big screen TVs to watch the Sox and Bears.
Sunday’s band lineup:
Identity Crisis noon-2 p.m. Beer Garden (Rock Covers)
The Dancing Noodles 2-4:30 p.m. Main Stage (Rock & Soul)
Slippery When Wet 4:30-7 p.m. Beer Garden (Bon Jovi Tribute)

Identity Crisis has played many bars, festivals, fairs, private parties, fund raisers & benefits. We would love to play your event!
As a dance music cover band, Identity Crisis brings you tons of music that you don't normally hear a band play, sending kids through adults in their 90s to the dance floor ALL NIGHT LONG!
With dance hits that are on the radio today & dance hits from the past, everyone in the crowd will be on their feet. We have all kinds of unusual twists & turns with our music medleys that you don't normally get from a cover band.
Give us some people & we will absolutely put them on the dance floor! We are known for causing them to have a lot more fun than they thought they were going to have & it makes them all want to come back for more!
From unplanned conga lines, sudden bouts of country line dancing, disco moves from the 70s & your good old fashioned dances right from Footloose, we serve them up those good vibrations like hot cakes on the all you can eat special.
Put us on your stage & see what we can do! We are up for hire for any event you might be planning, from a simple bar gig to a fest or wedding.
