Today we’d like to introduce you to MTG.
MTG, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As cliche as this may sound, music has been a part of my life since I can remember. My dad has always been musically inclined & he’s one of my heroes so naturally, I mimicked his every move artistically. At a young age, I absolutely loved writing poetry then quickly picked up singing. I then began singing at school & church. I was a worship leader for about two years. For personal reasons, I stopped singing for a bit & continued writing & going to poetry & spoken word events. One day, I decided why not put my words over a beat seeing that Rap, RNB & Hiphop have been in my life, my whole life. I found a whole new respect & love for this art & have been working at bettering myself as a lyricist, artist & entertainer since that day, I am in complete love with music & thank God for steering me in this direction.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey thus far has been far from smooth. I decided to FINALLY be an open book in my latest project titled ‘The Innerview’ available on all major music platforms. I opened up about being medically diagnosed with depression & anxiety at the age of 11, seeing friends die in front of me & having a miscarriage at three months & a stillbirth at six months of pregnancy. All of that while struggling to find myself in a country where I’m too “Latina” to be “American” & too “American” to be “Latina”. Although I did find all of these things challenging & at times too hard to bare. I will say each day, I’ve become so much stronger & faith-driven. I strive to be a better version of myself on a daily basis & beyond that. As a woman, specifically a woman of color we carry a lot of hurt & aren’t used to speaking up about emotions. We are usually taught to tough it out & if need be “cry alone, get up & move forward”. I want my friends, family & anyone reading this to know it’s okay to speak up, to feel, to cry & to truly EXPERIENCE life.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I’m an Artist, a Creator & Entertainer. You can, however, say I’m known for being a rapper, Bilingual LATINA Rapper to be exact. As a creator or just as a human, in general, we all go through crazy emotions & life experiences. I’m proud of the open book I’ve allowed myself to be not only for close family & friends but for the public. Although many people say that can be detrimental to my career seeing that I freely express myself with no filter, I view & feel like it’s one of my greatest attributes. If I’m being honest, that sets me apart from many other artists & entertainers. I have no problem with speaking up or people knowing my life. I always want my audience to know I’m human & they’re not alone. No one is alone & if you feel that way, I want everyone to know I’m here.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
The very woman that gave birth to me comes first, my mom. She is the hardest working woman I have ever met. Her faith in God inspires me to be more faith-driven & to be a better person. Even when times get hard, she always makes it work. Her drive, drives me.
Alyssa Dominguez, my best friend & sister. This woman is so talented, graceful & precise in everything she does. She’s taught me patience & encouraged me to stand up for myself no matter the situation. She’s always looking for ways to better herself which inspires me to do the same. I really would NOT be the person I am today without her.
Last but not least, Zanib, my Bestie Best, an amazing artist. This woman understands me in ways other friends can’t. She understands every word I say when I mention the struggle of figuring out who you are in America. That is having parents from other countries, being submersed in your culture as well as living in a country that doesn’t fully accept you. Although she’s Sudanese, she understands what I mean when I say I’m too Latina to be American & too American to be Latina. Zanib has inspired me to speak up & raise awareness even more about issues surrounding our cultures & has been a rock for me when I feel helpless. We will inspire the world together.
